JR15 got a reaction from Frustr8 in Can the surgeon leave more of the stomach if requested with VSG surgery

JR15 got a reaction from Frustr8 in Can the surgeon leave more of the stomach if requested with VSG surgery
If any surgeons out there monitoring site or any patients in the know I would like to know if a surgeon is able to leave more of the stomach in gastric sleeve surgery if the patient asks them to do so. Lets say my bmi is 37 and I wish to lose 60-80 lbs total. Is it then possible to leave more of the stomach so I could eat just a bit more than regular surgery? Hope this is not a stupid question but my surgery is scheduled in 4 months and wish to gather as much info as possible pre -surgery.
Thank you all who have read this post and value all input

I'm currently 62 and was quite a bit heavier to begin with (and still am, for that matter). I, personally, did not find the surgery difficult at all--recovered quite easily with almost no pain. I did have low energy for the first month or so, but am now back to what I'd consider pre-surgery energy levels--no big increase has been noticed by me, though many people report that.
I also take medication for high blood pressure and cholesterol, as well as GERD and diabetes. I'm still on the meds for the first three, but can report that my numbers/test results have been very good since the surgery. Additionally, while I'm still diabetic, I've stopped one medication and reduced another. More may happen with all of this as I lose more weight.
I'm still eating less than I did pre-surgery, but I'm at what I might call "small normal" meals--I don't miss the stuff I don't have any longer (e.g., diet soda, lots of bread), though I do incorporate some carbs into my diet (e.g., rye bread instead of white, and much less of it). Not a drinker, so that's not been an issue for me. Overall, it's not that you won't be able to eat many things, it's that it's not a good idea to keep eating some of them.
I don't know how much I'll lose overall, but I do know that I'm darned happy to have lost as much as I have so far. I don't spend a lot of time worrying about how I compare with others in terms of this--I just know whatever I can lose and keep off will improve my health and longevity. I'm also, personally, interested in having my knees hurt less, which they seem to be doing.
Good luck in making the decision. You can certainly read around the site and see what people say, but the majority definitely are glad they had this surgery--and very many wish they'd done it sooner.

JR15 got a reaction from Serenelysinister in Who had sleeve surgery in Mexico?
Newbie from US just starting research on gastric sleeve surgery. Mexico seems to be a very popular and affordable destination. Can those of you who had the procedure done there recommend a particular hospital, clinic, doctor, pre surgery, post surgery, etc? All recommendations are greatly appreciated both positive and negative.

Surgery went well, had VGS, Hiatal Hernia repair and a very sick gall bladder removal. My recovery took 8 weeks, back to work after 2 but was only capable of part time. Was back to a full schedule by 8 weeks.
Focusing on only eating Protein was hard at first, I had emotional issues with having 80% of my stomach removed and went through a solid week of regret and tears between week 4 and 5.
It's changed a million things and yet I'm the exact same person on the inside. It's changed how I eat, how I get up in the morning, how I shop, how I plan my day, weekends, everything. It's a totally different way of living. Everything changes. And yet...and yet I am still the same Elizabeth. When my mom says "it's the new you" i get a little upset. It's not a new me, its the same me with the same feelings and the same emotions. If you tell me I was fat and ugly before, it's STILL gonna hurt. Even if it's not what I look like now. That's the thing I take away most. I'm still me. I might look like a different person to others but I'm still the same sensitive knucklehead I was when I was wearing a size 32 as I am wearing a size 16 and hopefully soon a size 8.
For me my size, my weight, my looks, they have never been what I defined myself as, but as I lose weight I've realized it's how OTHERS defined me. And that can be upsetting because I'm the same person now as I was before.
But really, that's so minor. So many things are better now. Moving is better, buckling up in the car is better, dressing in the morning is better, taking a shower is better, buy shoes and clothes is better, making plans and looking forward to going out is better.

The surgery was good, I didn't have any issues afterwards, which I was surprised with. I often felt a 'failure' that I didn't really have to try very hard or fight for the weight loss. It just happened. Now when I look back I just think that I was very blessed.
What was I disappointed with? My transferance to alcohol for a few months in 2016. A very slippery slope and now I don't drink at all. It was a very dark place for me and I felt I couldnt tell people here because I'd be judged harshly and at that time I wouldn't have been able to cope with that. The funny thing is, even in those dark days, I never broke the 'food' rules and some weeks I continued to lose weight.
How has it changed my life? In EVER single area. Best thing I ever did

I wouldn't consider the band. Many patients have had long term complications, and a lot of surgeons will no longer perform this type of surgery anymore for that reason. Between those two options, I would choose the sleeve.

    SLEEVE 100%!!
I had the band in 2008. I had soooo many complications and so do many many other people. It has not been as successful as they hoped. My surgeon doesn't even put the band in anymore but they take out about 20 a year.
I suggest you DO NOT get the band.
The sleeve has been amazing for me. Even though I had some complications in the first 6 months (I am 8 months out now) I am so thankful for this surgery. It has saved my life!!

The band is a ticking time bomb. Concentrate on the sleeve and bypass.

I had a friend that had the band. He LOVED ice cream...because he could eat it ALL day long! It would just slide right through! The band only stops you momentarily from eating like an asshole (I have a whole blog post about this). But your stomach is still there, growling and able to take in food whenever you please and on top of that, whatever you please.
Personally, I had the RNY and I couldn't be happier but there are draw backs to that. I having dumping, I have to take Vitamins for the rest of my life, and I had to change my eating habits completely.
I guess it just depends on what you want to deal with...
