  1. In my program (MGH in Boston), the pre-op period was less about weight loss and more about building healthy habits. They told me to focus on Protein and Fiber with every meal and snack, make sure I didn't go more than 5 hours without eating, and sip on Water all day long. I'll say it was very helpful to me. And once I filled up on the protein and fiber, a lot of the foods I thought I was going to miss just weren't an issue. Until the 2 week pre-op liver shrinking diet started. Then everyone looked like a walking breadstick or slice of pizza to me.

  2. Consider putting the scale away for a month or so. Your body is recovering from major surgery. If you focus on staying hydrated, sticking to the plan your doctor gave you and resting you will be absolutely fine. I should also say that I had a relatively low BMI when I had my surgery, but I lost weight quickly. Patience and persistence are your friends.

  3. I'm 35, almost 2 years post-op and just found out I'm pregnant (5wks).

My MIL didn't have WLS but she had her first child (my husband) when she was 40 and her second child (his younger brother) at 45. They're both happy, healthy men. Although she did tell me she did not recommend waiting until I'm in my 40s to have kids, just because it was hard to keep up with the kids.

  4. What you're feeling is so normal after surgery. Give yourself some time. Get out for short walks. Follow your doctor's directions. Definitely seek some therapy too. It is such a vital part of your post-op care! If you feel like you can't talk to your current therapist about what's going one, find a new one that you are comfortable talking to.

  5. Good morning! I'm about 16 months out from VSG and I think I'm pregnant. Heading to my primary care for a test this afternoon. Should I ask about doing bloodwork to check my Vitamin levels? I haven't had my 1 year post op bloodwork yet because I haven't had time to schedule it and the follow up. Is there anything else I should know or ask about?

  6. Remember why you chose this path. Is it difficult? Yeah, of course. You're having most of an organ removed and changing the way you eat forever. That's huge! But I can tell you, at about 15 months out, this is the best decision I've ever made. I'm healthier, happier, and on the completely vain side of things, I look better than I have in a while! It's all worth it. You can do this! You also have our support.

  7. I had my sleeve done in October and honestly, I still get mood swings. I'm thinking that it is because I used food to make me feel better, and now I actually have to deal with it lol! But things will definitely get better. I was very down throughout my hospital stay and didn't really feel better until 2-3 weeks after I got home. Seeing weight loss results will definitely help you feel better!

You're absolutely right. We can't use food to make us feel better anymore and actually have to feel things now. It's not fun but we can get through. I'm having to learn that not all negative feelings are bad. It's ok to have them.

  8. I would say this is the best decision I've ever made. I had minimal pain, no problems getting my fluids down, and no problems eating. About 2 weeks before surgery I was very nervous as well but I met some of my surgeon's other patients in the waiting room of his office and they share their experiences with me and it helped a lot.

Everything will be fine! You will be fine! Even better than fine.

  9. Hello! Just a quick question. I've been on Xanax to control my panic attacks for about a year a d a half now. Pre-op, I could take a half mg and have no trouble staying awake. It just took the edge off enough that I could deal with what was happening. Now, 3 months post-op, I started needing to take it again and it puts me right to sleep!

Anyone else experience a change like this?
