I was also hungry shortly after surgery, despite being allowed to eat by day 4. Turns out my acid reducers weren't working and it wasn't really hunger but acid I was feeling.

Just thought I'd make an update. It's about 2.5 days since my lower body lift. Just got up after a good chunk of sleep and feeling itchy!! All over itchy!! As it's still night I took another Percocet, but feeling like I'll only need those now when sleeping and probably just 1 instead of the 2 I was taking. I took the clinic recommendations to take your pain meds as directed every 4 hours for the first couple days to stay in front of the pain. That I think has definitely helped although I'm kinda done with being in the groggy state of mind.
I've had two poops (tmi I know but very important) and didn't need anything to get things going. Ive been feeling like a need to couch, but it hurt to much to try. Just slowly was able to couch up two chucks of yellow crap from my lungs, not sure whats that all about.
I think I've transitioned from lazy boy to couch with masses of pillows for support. I was able to get up and down just now pretty comfortably.
So far no issues. I do have staples and will likely have those out Monday.
That's all I can think of for now. Oh I did weigh myself, out of curiosity and was expecting to be up, even though they took 15lbs. I went into surgery at 197 and yesterday I was 195. Thought that was pretty good. Night night for now.

Whenever I go up a little on the scale. Just eating dense Protein for a couple days takes it right off.
Your Dr is right, shakes are useless and will do nothing for you. Shakes are like Water to me. They do nothing saiety or hunger.

Try just eating dense protein, something you have to cut with a knife, and see what happens.

I'm hungry all the time. I have been lucky to be able to eat solids since day 4, as per my program, but I still get hungry after like 2-4 hours, depending on what I eat. I could never go half a day without eating.
At 6 weeks I got cleared to eat everything, and first thing I tried was salty licorice (favorite). I have tried different things, some has failed (dairy based ice cream is a big no no), some, no problem.
My surgeon/NUT team state again and again that I'm no longer on a diet. I should focus on Protein, the rest is up to me. And in order to get my protein in, I'm not able to eat a ton of carbs and sugar, but I still have some. This past weekend I had sushi for the first time, a whole 5 small maki. I just made sure my protein for the rest of the day was good. I'll be 5 months out on Sunday.

A point I want to make is that when you are obese, your stored fat is holding a lot of things in place. Once your fat is slowly disappearing, you need muscles to do that job. A lot of people who has had wls feel amazing afterwords. Knees are not hurting anymore etc. Then, several months out, things are starting to hurt again. This is often because things are not supported like it used to.
With my program, we got an exercise program before surgery. It was a generic one, but had 10 exercises you could to at home with minimal equipment, and it started easy and it had ways to make it harder. We went through the whole program with physical therapists before the surgery and was encouraged to start before surgery, and start up again at 3 weeks out.
I started walking a little over a week after surgery (I had to have a nerveblock for a herniated disk that got moved during surgery so I couldn't really do anything for the first week or so). I started lifting weights 2 a week at 3-4 weeks (I was in a program for my back, so it was supervised). I walk everywhere, and average between 12 000 and 20 000 steps a day. The program I was in is over, so I'm now lifting 2-3 times a week, but only like 10 min warm-up and 45 min of lifting tops. I also do nordic walking.
I have had a steady weight loss since 2 weeks before surgery (I have had a loss every week except one), I have now lost over 80 lbs. I eat carbs (but I naturally restrict because I can't tolerate to much. I eat them though). I am anywhere from 800-1200 calories at this point. I'll be 5 months out on Sunday. I don't really do Protein Shakes, I get my Protein from food. I eat around 80g a day. If I want more or I have had a day outside of my routine, I'll sometimes do a shake.

Ok, so I got curious about the relative speed of excess fat loss.
This is what I've found out about my situation.
I have a sleeve which can usually be expected to shave off 65% of my excess weight. Since I'm already at 54% excess weight lost, (or so I thought).. I was like.. that doesn't sound right. So I dug deeper.
    There is a neat calculator:
    http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/information/post+op+planner.php
According to the calculator, my "ideal" body weight is 147lbs. (I thought it was supposed to be 159lbs.) So I actually have lost exactly 50% of my excess body weight as of now.
I toyed with the percentages and I match up with 85% loss at goal (compared to 65% average). Which puts my final weight at 171lbs. My assumed goal has been 180lbs, so I'm thrilled!
It'll be interesting to see how working out changes things.

So according to that calculator I should weigh 138 lbs. I have set my goal at 149. 9 lbs because it gives me a normal BMI. I have calculated out from that number. If I am to get down to 138, I have at this point lost 64.5% of my excess weight. I'm still ahead of the chart, which has me at 70 lbs lost at 5 months, and I'm at 80.9 lbs

Oh, and you are 2 inches shorter than me, and I started out about 50lbs heavier.. so even though the actual pounds lost are the same, your percentage excess loss is much greater.

Yes, absolutely! no one should take this comparison to mean never to work out. I honestly believe it shows that AT FIRST the surgery is doing most of the work. But I strongly suspect that if I were to remain a couch potato for the next 7 months, our end points would look VERY different.
I have a gym membership, and at this point I'm only waiting for the kids to go back to school (1.5 weeks) and then I'll start using it. I want to be as strong and fit as anyone, but waiting to shed 80lbs hopefully will have helped me to be less injury-prone.
So, sorry to anyone out there that is wishing to see how a couch potato ends up, you'll have to look elsewhere

Wow, our stats are so similar. It goes to show how different we all are and that one size does not fit all.
I didn't have an option to not workout because of my back, I also love working out. But it's so interesting to see how different approaches has given so similar results.
I work out because I like it, and that is really important. If working out is going to be more of a pain and bother, wait. If you have medical reasons as to why it would be good for you to work out, do it, but don't overdo it.
As overweight people we have more muscles then the normal weight person because we have to carry our own weight. As we lose weight, there is less to carry, so we will lose muscles if we don't work out (lift weights). Muscles burn calories.
So I work out because it's fun, I want to keep my muscles, and because I'm motivated to do it. It's not something I have to, but I want to.

Hey surgery buddy! Oh how fun! We get to compare our journeys!
I am also 5 months out on Sunday.
I am a couch potato, probably average 1000-2000 steps a day. I don't lift weights, except taking out the garbage twice a week.
I also have had steady weight loss (have lost every week except for 2.. so mine has stalled a little more than yours).
I have now lost 79lbs.. so 1.5 pounds less than you .
My calories have been higher than yours since mine are consistently at or a smidge above the top of your range for about 3 months now. (1200-1300).
Oh, and of course, you have a bypass and I have a sleeve.
I also don't do shakes, 70g of Protein from food a day and I eat carbs.. about 60g.
I'm tickled by how eerily similar our stats are!
I like what you are saying about fat not supporting things anymore... I can definitely see that... I have a history of luxating patellas, and a week ago it happened for the first time in years.

@jess9395 You are reading me like a book. Thanks for the psychoanalysis over the internet... save me huge $ on my therapy bills... smh...
I didn't share my story because no one really cares. But everyone seems to have their own judgmental opinions on something that is super individual and personal.
But because you seem to continue to comment. I was a healthy muscular 275lb before I hit a mental breakdown and walked into a 3 year depression and ballooned. Those dark years stole a lot of my life. I'm back to a healthy mindset and in trying to match my physical with my mental and emotional state I chose to have the surgery. What you don't know is up here in Canada its a 3-4 year wait to get your first consultation. So I chose Mexico from 2 referrals of the same doctor. It was a great decision and I'm dropping lb's left and right. I have a dietician and a personal trainer set up so I get all the advice I need.
I'm glad you found your success, and I hope for you the best. But please keep your opinions and judgment to yourself.

I was too afraid of dying to getting sick to really test my sleeve early on. I live alone far away from friends and family so I had surgery alone and recovered alone.
I am pretty happy that I was so afraid, because by the time I introduced other foods. I had so much success with my weight loss, I wasn't willing to risk it for food.
Just because you can tolerate foods, doesn't mean you should try them. You really need to get handle on your cravings because by the time you are 6 months you will be able to eat larger amounts of the foods you shouldn't be eating.
At the 2 year mark I could easily eat 3-4000 calories a day if all I did was sit in the house and munch all day. Large pizza, family size bag of chips, unlimited Cookies. All of that. In a day if all I did was eating. Nothing is going to stop you from eating bad foods but you.

I am 3 years post VSG. I made a HUGE mistake of not joining any formal form of exercise after my surgery. I did walking for the first 10 weeks because I was home on a medical leave. However once I went back to work my days were JAM PACKED-as they had been in the past, and the stress was a huge factor in my highest weight- and I jumped back into work without thought. I suffered for it, because I stopped walking and my weight loss slowed. After I moved and changed jobs the following year, I tried to exercise again but found it became harder and harder as the honeymoon period slowed and ended.
    I REGRET THIS IMMENSELY.
Because of my move I also had to change surgeons and leave my support group, and this too added to a serious back slide for me.
As a true veteran of bariatric surgery, I urge everybody to PLEASE heed the advice of your surgeon and support group. Please find some form of movement/exercise that you will be able to keep doing long term, and start doing it as soon as you can post op. Please stick to your eating plan exactly as you are instructed. Please consider changing the parts of your life that were causes of your food addiction.
I ignored much of this. For that, I have regained a major part of the weight I lost and I find myself having to deal with doing it all over again.
