    Hi Ruth,

I’m only a few days out but I might have had my first dumping syndrome from Water today so it for sure seems possible. Can you adjust the way you consume the calories to higher before exercise and then less after, hopefully still leaving you full. Good luck and congrats on being a year out.

I get the hot flashes and sleepiness when I eat too many carbs or too much at once. I am particularly sensitive to bread. If I eliminate certain foods or eat in smaller batches it helps stave off dumping syndrome.

I told very few people. People just say such negative things to you about weight loss surgery. At the end of the day it's your business not theirs and you shouldn't worry about keeping it secret x

I'm sorry but some of the reactions you posted made me laugh. I think I have found and come to the conclusion that it's ultimately because people are uninformed and react based on stigma rather than fact. Someone always knows someone who's sisters, cousins, aunties, grandma had the surgery and they were malnourished or could do this or that, but what they don't know is if that person was actually following the program and what the doctor set forth for them to do. Of course in rare occasions people have issues despite following to the letter what their doctor told them, but usually if someone has issues it's because they aren't doing what they should be and blaming it on the surgery. I also want to say you may need to tell your podiatrist to stick to his day job because there is a reason he isn't an OB/GYN lol! Actually statistically women who have undergone WLS have safe and healthier pregnancies and it happens every day without complication. We eat as a family everyday! I am 30days post op today and even though I am now on soft foods I may just have to eat something different for the time being because I'm not approved to eat certain things yet. However I have been able to eat more normal meals eating the same as my family the last few days so I don't even know where that response came from. I had to cut one of my best friends from my life already because I was over her sanctimonious rants(she's a Pilates instructor) about how she would train me if we lived close and how she thought I was making a mistake because her ex mother in law had it and was malnourished and I should just work out harder and the wonder of Pilates blah blah blah. I couldn't take it and her lack of support was infuriating because I was the only one that supported her as she made stupid choices. My mom told me she thought I shouldn't do it and that I would regret it and she even cried over it, but now she kinda sees why i did and the progress I'm making and I think she is changing her tune. Unfortunately there will probably be more people to have that sentiment as you choose to tell more, but I told the people that mattered most to me and while my mom didn't agree she supported me knowing I would do it anyway, my best friend and my daughters god mother has been in my corner on my side since day one with no judgements and tons of support, and my other friend like I said I had to leave that friendship behind because aside from the surgery it was healthy for me and I couldn't do it anymore the surgery was just kind of the last straw. It's amazing how something like this shows you who is and is not there for you. That's also not to say that some people need time wrapping their head around it and maybe researching it on their own to better understand it. At 30 days out I have had buyers remorse here and there it isn't easy, but now that I'm getting to eat real food it has gotten better and I can say I don't regret it. The only person who mattered to me was my husband and he has been in my corner since day 1. Just keep your head up and keep at it! Also for me so far the Vitamins are the worst because they are gross lol, but I still take them as I'm supposed to and they aren't that hard to manage 3 in the am and 3 in the pm. If you need Iron you would take one extra, I was already taking this many vitamins before surgery so this is no different for me other than having to chew them which is gross.

My husband and son know, since they live with me and all that, otherwise I haven't said a thing.
I had mentioned interest in it a year ago to my sister and a bunch of negative filth spewed out of her mouth, so I haven't brought it up since.
I don't know anyone up here and my negative family is 700+ miles away, so I doubt people will ever know.

I only told people I knew would support my decision. There's tons of people in my family I haven't told. Mainly because they all like to gossip. I'm not all for giving them something to talk about behind my back.

If they ever ask how I lost all of my weight I'm just going to say "Proper nutrition and exercise." That is some of the truth anyway.

As far as going to family functions, I'd either bring my own food or look around and see if anything they made were healthy food and had nutritional value. If everything isn't so healthy, I'd just not eat it. The only thing I really enjoy eating is shrimp, broccoli, zucchini and certain salads. I'm iffy on chicken. It's such a heavy meat but I like how fast I can get full off it.

Alright, enough with my rambling. I hope I helped at least a little bit.

    Hello
I have kept my Surgury a secret. Only person who knows is my husband, son and 2 great friends. I want to avoid having to hear negative opinions about people. I have not even told people and they already have commented so bad and imagine if they knew, it would be worse. A lot fun jealous people out there and sad to say sometimes it's your love ones or close friends. I try to avoid as much negativity as possible. There is nothing wrong with that.

In my family I've only told my husband and one of my kids. I've told about 4 friends and that's it. I didn't tell my inlaws because my father in law doesn't respect boundaries. When my hubby had RNY 11 years ago he told his parents and brothers and no one else. They all broke that confidence and the entire extended family and some friends know. My husband feels like he gets odd looks and judgements like he took the easy way out. This is mist definitely not the easy way out!

No I didn't keep my surgery a secret. Boy do I regret it. Someone I know had the surgery prior to me told me not to tell anyone because ppl are going to hate. I didnt believe it because I'm always supportive & compliment others. I told my sister in law and she went on for hours about all the ppl she knows that had unsuccessful surgeries and I'm going to have all this flabby skin. She even went as far as stop talking to me. Smh I am so hurt!!

Only told my husband, and very glad I stopped there. Even if the comments aren't negative, which I'm sure a lot would be, I didn't want to hear any comments, ANY. I struggle with rewiring my mind and how it thinks about food. I struggle getting away from the diet mentality. The only way I will be successful is if this is not a diet, but a lifestyle. I have lost a lot of weight, and I hear comments and questions all the time, and it's exhausting, what diet are you on? how much do you exercise? did you know you can burn more walking stairs? have you tried weight lifting? you know, low carb is not good for you....question after question, and it stresses me out. I have a coworker that religiously watches what I eat at my desk now, and always feels the need to start a conversation about it. I can't imagine what it would be like if they knew of the surgery. In addition, I don't want people to forever see me as my surgery.
I had the same fear, of people finding out, or how to hide it. At gatherings, I can always find something remotely healthy, and stay away from stuff that's not healthy. For the first month, I really stayed away from gatherings, since I knew I couldn't eat regular food yet, and had massive head hunger. I'm 3.5 mo out, and can eat regularly, just much much less. I eat slow and while a few ladies have asked why I'm eating less, "I had a big lunch" has been enough to shut down any further conversation. I used to go to gatherings anticipating food, wondering what food I will get to eat. I now go and think about the people I'll see. It's hard to explain what that mental weight off my shoulders it is. I want to eat like a normal person, and be a normal person, not "the fat girl that had surgery", so that's why I kept it secret and I have not regretted it.
As for a good excuse to use for time off. I know a lot of people use gallbladder surgery. I said I had some issues with my colon, left if vague. If people keep asking (which only two have), I've said I really don't know much about it, it's all doctor-speak to me, they just need to clean it out. From there on, I keep reiterating, I really don't know. No one has pushed past that. Short answers and vague.
    Good luck!

You need to remember that you're recovering from major surgery. Lots of people feel exhausted post surgery. The person before is right - keep your Fluid and Protein intake up and before you know it you'll come out the other side feeling fab. Don't forget to take your Vitamins too

I had a bypass in Feb 2017 and I've been great with no complications. Best decision I've ever made although I do agree that you also need a positive mental attitude and embrace the changes that are made. I love making sure that I do 10000 steps a day which is the complete opposite to how I was pre op !

Well, I have friends that don't know I had surgery, and sort of show some contempt anytime they're eating sizeable food portions but I'm having just 2oz of fish and 2 spoons of rice.
Someone once said I'm acting as if I'm the first person to diet..
I don't really care. I can now shop at regular stores and I'm still losing..
You just have to ignore them and keep doing what you're doing.

Interesting points thanks for the feedback!! And I agree the surgery saved me I wasn't able to lose weight without it but it's a tool anyone past 1 year post op knows the weight can come back if we don't exercise and watch portions. Obesity is a disease and people need to realize that...it's like being rude to someone cause they have diabetes or heart disease. Part of these diseases are genetic and part are lifestyle just like obesity.

Most of the people that have something Negative To say Are Probably overweight and wish the had the guts to do it OR if they are not overweight they liked it better when you were the "fat" friend /family member because that made the feel better about themselves. KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK AND CONTINUE TO SHUT THEM DOWN WITH YOUR NEW SHAPE!!!!
And for those that keep throwing up what you USE TO WEIGH in your face, simply say "That's my past and I don't live there anymore "

Does anyone else experience contempt from others about their weight loss? I get so tired of some friends and family saying the only reason I lost weight is the surgery. They look at me with contempt when I say I'm dieting and exercising. They act like I took the easy way out by surgery. I have a family member who likes to remind me that I'd weigh 400 pounds now if i didn't have the surgery...wth!! I exercise 5 times a week and have been since 4 months post op and I eat fairly healthy nothing too strict but I watch what I eat during week so I can take a break on weekends. I'm slowly losing my last 10 pounds. But I hate people rolling their eyes at me and making snide comments...I know it's their issue and I have to not let it but me but I wish I hadn't said anything to people and just said I was getting gallbladder surgery! Especially now I'm a size 10 on way to an 8 far from my size 22.
