I just got excited for you, OP, cause I love where your mind is!!!

@LELH she stole the warm and fuzzy feeling right out of me for you! LOL

I eat plant based as well. I also love to learn from Dr Michael Greger. (I will always be grateful for @fruitandveggiesfor sending him to me!!! lol :) ) He's got a non-profit organization, the website is https://nutritionfacts.org/ ,a whole load of information he puts out there for free and why we should eat lots of veggies, fruits, legumes, grains, etc. But not only that, it's the science and explanations for everything, and IT JUST MAKES SENSE!!! Also, Dr Garth Davis, bariatric surgeon, and author of Proteinaholic, had to renounce his previous book that had everything to do with eating high Protein, due to his failing health and his Quest for a better one.

Early on post op, I did focus a bit more on the protein as suggested. I did substitute a lot of it with plant protein though, and tried to finish the Premier Protein that was covered by my insurance at that time, but about 3 months post op, I made the switch to not worry about it anymore, that is, I don't count any nutrients. I'm almost 9 mo post now and all is well. Blood work is excellent too; I take my multi (currently it's the Flintstones chewable and my B12). It's totally doable...but the best part is, you will know your insides are healthy!

Hahaha! To me it looks like it has a vinaigrette dressing on it--which is why it appeals so much. I do like mayo, but really dig vinaigretty slaws. :)

That, I will try and probably love then!!

Lemon juice, olive oil and some nice herbs for me. Makes a loverly dressing, yes it do.

My favorite kind of dressings...mmm, yum!

I confess, now all this talk of a different dressing, I just may make some now. Haha!

  3. Today’s dinner is brought to you by Two Peas and Their Pod. Lemon Orzo salad with Asparagus Spinach and Feta. Yum! I made it early cause we’ve got somewhere to be. This way dinner is ready when we get home! Can be warm or cold. Omit the feta and it can be vegan too. Still just as good!

I guess I mind as well do what I want then, lol. What was your Protein intake and diet like at 3 month post op?

I stopped counting Protein about that time. After reading a book by a bariatric surgeon, Dr Garth Davis, called Proteinaholic, it was evident to me that there wasn’t any need to cram so much of it into my diet. If I eat the right nutritious foods, I’d get the requirements needed in. Alas, some folks need to know, and that’s okay too. From what I’ve read (this book has science and sources from all over) we don’t really need as much as the western diet says. I probably eat on average maybe 40 g a day. Eating lots of veggies and grains, and even fruit will get that for ya. Ive had three blood work ups since my surgery and not one of them states I’m at a deficit of anything. 😊

  5. I had greens since pre-op diet and even immediately post-op. My NUT approved of what I’ve shared on BP before, my green bombs. It’s a mix of leafy greens, green apple, avocados, anything green really...and Water. Blended really good, poured in ice cubes and frozen. When I made my Protein Shakes early on, I dropped one of them in with it and was able to get my veggie/fiber nutrition in as well, (It was all liquid. 😊 ) until I got further out and just ate them.

  6. You’ll still get Hair loss (unless you’ve got a miracle gene that doesn’t let it go) whether you are on a high Protein or low protein diet. My doc reminded all of us patients that it’s a given. I dealt with it between 3-7 months. It wasn’t as bad as I thought it’d be, but I’ve also had a head full of hair to start. I’ve read countless others upping protein count to prevent, but alas, it does not work like that. So, you’ll have to make do with what you lose., unfortunately. Blessings hon.

Or...is it that set point is also reduced, making it easier to lose weight? I’m already at about 1200 calories per day and the scale won’t drop beyond 194. I’m 5’ 2”.

Okay....the set point is reduced with surgery, so yes, it's easier to lose weight in the beginning. This is why it's called the honeymoon phase. Easy peasy...but then you get on in time and you have to work it, just as any other person who manages their weight...but the catch is...you've developed great eating habits, better foods in your diet, and you are working out, whether it's just a simple walk a day or going to the gym and lifting, or whatever workout you want to do.

Now, if you're eating 1200 calories a day to lose weight on your own...that's WAY TOO LOW. Please believe me, I did that, so do the numerous others who did it, and guess what...you have a rough patch and you start eating back the way you did, and WHAM! It gets piled back on and more! So, please please also believe me when I say, you can gain weight eating too low. I did this. Not because I was on some kind of diet, just because I didn't eat. When I did eat, the body was saying "hey, you didn't feed me enough food, so I'm going to hang on to every calorie you've just eaten, especially the fat and store it." My doc got on to me for this!!! So, education is key. Sometimes you have to figure out how the body actually works and figure out what you need to do. So, I entered in your stats in this calculator. I don't know your age (but I put in 30) and I don't know your activity level (so I put in light 1-3 times a week). Your body, at these stats, is supposed to be getting about 1697 calories a day to lose at a 15% deficit. When you lose, you revisit the calculator and get your new numbers. When you meet goal, revisit, and you'll have a general idea of how many calories you'll be eating to maintain.

Now, I wish I had the discipline to have done this in the beginning without wls, but I needed to forced, per se, to learn better eating and change my lifestyle (I'm now plant based/vegan/vegetarian-like); I was also at a higher BMI and nearing getting complications due to my age/lifestyle then. I've always enjoyed working out, so that wasn't an issue for me. I'm at 40 lbs from my goal...and when I reach it, for my future stats, I'll be eating approximately 2400 calories a day. Sounds like a lot right? But my body will need it for the amount of energy it puts out.

Check out the calculator and check out this website, if you plan to do it on your own.

Relearning how to sit properly accounting for my new weight fix it for me. It took me months to get it right though.

I think it may be the same here for me too, but I’ll get there. Currently sitting with a rolled up pillow behind my back. I’ll look in to lumbar supports....Thanks for chiming in!

I heard it's hell for almost a year. But i did hear it does get better. But i don't think it's worth it for me as of yet. Think I'll have someone just fill out the back for me with some of the front, see how that goes lol.

OUCH!!!! Probably take a whole lot more issues other than just fixing your posture to have to go that route. Not for me.

It’s about fixing your posture! When we are obese we sit to accommodate the fat and our posture suffers... we need to reclaim the curvature of the lumbar spine. Sit on the bones on the backs of your legs not your tailbone. See the pic for illustration...IMG_7654.JPG.6388e580557e56d7bfbf3c5938f52c58.JPG

My physical therapist and yoga instructors helped me immensely with this! In yoga they call it your “sitz” bones! Dunno if that’s a real thing or not lol

Wouldn’t you know....I’ve been on a Quest about posture for the past week!!! Now that I think of it, I position the lumbar in my car for my back, and I don’t get this feeling while driving.

Thank so much hon!!! I’ll be paying way more attention to how and where I sit...and strengthening my core/glutes in the process.

Been trying to figure this out myself. If someone finds out how to heal tailbone pain without getting rid of my tailbone, greatly appreciated

Ive heard the pain associated with getting rid of one is through the roof! I think I’d just rather lay on my stomach for the rest of my life. Lol. I’m going to focus on doing some glute exercises over a span of time and see if it indeed helps. I’ll be sure to report it at some point or during the progress.

How about a gel pillow but cushion? ((hugs)) Sorry to hear this! :(

I’ve thought of one...I may have to try it. BUT, wouldn’t it only work on a hard chair? My fear is that it won’t work. I sit on my chair (which is like a recliner) and I still get this mess. It’s a big comfy chair. So the softness of the chair doesn’t even work. I’m weary of the gel not working too.

  13. Seconding @Creekimp13, we plant based folks are always there in the vegan/vegetarian thread. As for losing muscle mass, hmm?? I’m gaining muscle mass. I’m about 9 months post as well. Check out the recipe thread for some good stuff too.

Want a salty crunchy snack: roasted Broad Beans. Low fat popcorn.

As for Protein, I don’t count it, but I do eat a lot of grains, legumes, and veggies. Doc hasn’t had an issue with me not getting enough. So, I can’t help ya in that arena, but I do know these foods all have protein.

  14. Hi y’all, I’m just shy of 9 months post. The last couple of months it’s been ridiculous having to sit down. Within ten minutes, my bum gets numb and tingling. I am constantly shifting positions to try and alleviate it some. I’ve been searching for ways to hopefully get rid of it. Main thing is probably to workout my bottom and strengthen the glutes, but I want to hear if anyone has had some success with whatever you’ve done to get rid of the numbness and tingling. Btw...if I sit for 10-15 mins, the symptoms don’t go away at all! I have to go to bed with it still going. A bit frustrating.
