I had UHC plus and it took them 10 business days. I was required to do 6 months pre-op. My BMI was 48 and I had hypertension, but I was told it’s much easier to get approved with UHC than Aetna.

Also they didn’t care if I gained weight during that 6 month period just as long as I didn’t miss any supervised dieting appointments. Maybe that helps?

Thought I would add on to this post. I have UHC and I did not have to do an EKG or an ultrasound. I also didn't have to keep records of my food or exercise.
I did have to do 6 months worth of supervised dieting. I had to have a psych evaluation. I did have to do a endoscopy. My final appointment with my surgeon was to answer final questions. I was told approval/denial would be sent within 7-10 business days from UHC. It took them exactly 9 business days for an approval.
I did NOT have to lose a specific amount of weight beforehand and actually gained from my first appointment 6 months ago and still received an approval.
I'm located in Texas and could be different depending on which plan you have UHC. It's been a painless process though. Surgery is scheduled for June 12, 2017.

I don't plan on making a big post about it on Facebook but if people ask me and I can tell they are going through the same struggle I've been through the last 10+ years, I'll talk about it. There's nothing worst than having someone tell you "oh all I did was eat salads every day." And then you find out years later they had WLS. Obviously I was struggling and I'm sorry but no amount of salads is going to make you drop 100lbs. I'm just gullible. I also talk too much so more than likely I'll tell people when they ask, but I'll also back it up with all the work I've put into it as well (diet change, exercise, accountability.) I won't shout it from the rooftops, but I do intend on telling those who were looking for help the same way I had when I was lied to.
    I'm have surgery on June 12, 2017.

Being able to fly without my fat touching the person next to me. Being able to snowboard without struggling to get up. Shopping will be more enjoyable. Also I'm looking forward to my heart rate spiking when I'm doing stupid things like putting on my shoes.

I am also 5 years post op. This has totally been a roll coaster, but worth the ride. When I first started surgery, I was 275lbs. In a year I was down to 153lbs. Now I am at 170lbs, and I am pretty content even though I know that I could shed down to the 160s if I tracked my food better. My goal at surgery was 180, but I think I felt my best at 160 so I am working to shed 10lbs this month. I think the surgery is worth it IF you are committed to the lifestyle change. I work out 5 days a week, no excuses. I do splurge with carbs here and there, but overall, my portions are about the same. I think the key to success is having a support group(this website), and following the instructions of your surgeon. You will stray, you will have ups and downs with your weight, but its your ability to make it a lifestyle change that will help you keep your weight in control. Remember, surgery does not cure "head hunger" or your mental cravings. Those will be your battles to fight, and they usually occur more frequently as the years progress after your first year of surgery .

You've really got yourself tied up in knots over all this. I'm sorry you're feeling so out of control.
You are not going to die because you're having a tough time in the early days. I couldn't keep anything at all down until I was a week postop, and nothing but Clear Liquids after that for another 10 days after that. I'm halfway between five and six weeks and I'm meeting Protein, Fluid, and calorie goals. Really.
You are not going to "die young after having so many complications from getting 70% of my stomach removed and losing all those important hormones." All what important hormones? The only hormone you're losing is ghrelin, the hormone that can lead to overeating.
Buyer's remorse is very, very, VERY common in the first month after surgery, especially for people who have a rougher time than others. I've observed from reading these boards that it's also very common in younger individuals with less life experience who may also have less understanding of how our bodies work. Lack of knowledge can really contribute to fear of the "what if's".
Don't let that derail you. If you haven't already been in touch with your surgeon about the trouble you're having, call. Now. I don't care if it's the weekend, there is always someone on call 24/7.
Hang in there. You can do this!

@@KittyCathy22 I don't know how much you have to lose - but I'm assuming you were obese and that's why you had WLS. There are significant complications and health problems that go along with being obese. WLS is a huge step and scary to everyone - especially someone who has just started their adult life. Please know that it will get easier! Your life will be so so much better being a healthy weight. Think about all of the things you will be able to do - including have children and even grandchildren - and enjoy the time you spend with them. I'm 25 years older than you - and I feel like that time has been wasted. I never had children - and could not enjoy much of the last 25 years because of my weight. None of us know what life has in store for us in the future - so take a deep breath and just have fun!!!
    Sending you a big hug!!!

I am so sorry you are experiencing such distress. Many people go through a period of regret right after surgery for a variety of reasons: hormonal fluctuations, the shock of surgery on the system, the fact that you cannot use food to regulate moods and emotions, etc.
I would suggest that this is a good opportunity to look for a good counselor or therapist to help you learn to cope in a healthy way. See if the person who did your psych clearance can see you or refer you to someone.
Whether you want to or not, you cannot turn back the clock and change what happened. The good news is that you have no choice but to move forward: you get to decide how well you follow your program and learn to make the most of this opportunity.

I just got back from the medical weight loss seminar that is required by the hospital. Very informative and helpful. I think I have made the right decision and my wife has decided to take the same adventure. Will be nice having a partner to go with. [emoji3]

Honestly.. I felt the same way before I got sleeved. Then I realize that I can't let food control my life. You can eat that again just in a very very small portion. Get the surgery. You will love yourself even more and be happy with the amount of weight you lose. Get the sleeve! Don't let food stop you from getting the happiness you deserve. Good luck
Throwin up sucks but it helps you realize when u over eat.

My worst experience thus far has been:
    1) My case manager leaving to another city, and being stuck with a control freak case manager assigned to me. Being the proactive person I am, I made sure to change immediately after meeting her and giving her the bad news when she tried to follow up on the dietitian's demands.
    2) A dietitian who freaks out. Not conducive to lifestyle changes whatsoever.
Both of these people were in the minority by a long shot, when I have my surgeon, internist, family doctor, hepatologist, and every other person in the medical industry i see absolutely thrilled at the reversal of my health problems and massive weight loss at the same time, two control freaks are mad because they have a rather large ego and I'm the type of person who smashes those. Already changed case manager after telling her to piss off, but the dietitian who threatened to derail my surgery, I made sure I have one post-op appointment with her before changing to another dietitian (already have appointments with the new one as well) so I can tell her how well I did while completely ignoring her pre-op diet commands. Whether she wants to be humble about it or not is irrelevant to me, either way, she'll get a dose of reality that she controls no one.

    I am 31, single, with a BMI of 35.88...
Does anyone have any ideas as far as a good "cover story" to tell my friends, coworkers, or colleagues in regards to being off work for a week or two to have surgery? I was thinking something along the lines of abdominal surgery or a female type of surgery so it is somewhat consistent with the sleeve surgery and side effects I will actually be having. I do not want a lot of people to know that I had this surgery so I would prefer to keep it to myself but it will be somewhat difficult since I am the type of person who has never been shy or closed off about my own personal life. I live a very social type lifestyle involving weekly gatherings with friends where alcohol is always present. For the last few years or so, after I have any type of alcoholic drink, my face and neck turn bright red from what is (seemingly) an allergy to alcohol so I can most definitely use that as my story as to why I will be not drinking for a year, per my doctor's orders. Can anyone help think of a good surgery that is non-bariatric but would be a good cover story to be vague about if people were to ask? I know it probably would be best to just be truthful with friends but I would prefer to keep this to myself as it will be my own journey and I do not want the judgement or ridicule from others especially since I am in a smaller California town where a lot of people talk/gossip.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
