I had the 4th visit with my surgeon on Monday. After having a sleep study, moderate obstructive sleep apnea was diagnosed, along with hypertension. I have a JUST under 40 BMI, so now I officially qualify. I've completed my required support group meetings, gotten pulmonary clearance, and scheduled the remaining required appointments throughout this month (nutritionist, psych eval, cardiologist, endoscopy) he says that at my may appointment, all of my records will be submitted to insurance for approval, and I'll receive a tentative surgery date.
I think this is really happening [emoji4]

    Hi Dan,
I guess we'll be twins. My surgery date is 2/14 as well. My surgeon is really hot so I finally have a hot date for Valentine's Day. LOL Anyway I must say the first 3 days on the pre-op diet was easiest for me. The longer it goes the harder it is. I guess because I'm bored with my options. There's only so much cottage cheese, apple sauce, broth, crystal light and Protein Shakes a person can take. So far I'm down 12 lbs since last Wednesday when I started. I wish you the best of luck with your surgery and here's to us having a new love for ourselves.

I need 7 months, and I'm 4 months in. I feel like it's dragging and it's making me crazy. My surgeon said he'd give me a tentative date
at my may appointment. I'm looking at surgery late may or early June, after approval.

Hey I have to wait the same amount of time for my insurance so I know exactly how you feel. It makes me very anxious and sometimes frustrating because other insurances are quicker. Just try to hang in there & do a countdown or do some writing or some type of activity to take your mind from it as much as possible if you can & good luck!????

My husband knows and is very supportive, and I told my mom (she had lap band about 6 years ago) and nobody else. I don't need nor want to explain my personal decision to anyone else.

The last time I checked, I didn't store my personality in my thighs...lol! As someone who's been a healthy weight and then morbidly obese all within the span of 10 years, I can tell my personality didn't change but I did become more anxious about not wanting to leave the house at the large weight I've become. If anything, I would think losing weight would make you more outgoing...how could that be bad? I suggest you attend a bariatric support group and talk to a wide range of people from different age groups and different walks of life who've gone through the process. They'll be able to give you feedback regarding their experience rather than just gaining the info from 1 friend.

I think your friend has ulterior motives - it may not be conscious, but in his comments I read between the lines "I wasn't successful, but if you have WLS and are successful, then I look even worse."
There will be people in your life who don't want you to change even if it's for the better because they like you as you are and they like how they feel around your current self. They don't want you to be "better" than them (not that you would be, but I'm talking insecurities here), thinner than them, more confident than them, better looking than them, happier than them.
Pay attention to facts only. Ignore the opinions of those who might have personal agendas for wanting you to stay as you are. Go with your gut and what YOU want for yourself and your life.

I don't understand the myth that it will change our personality. My mother said the same thing. I think that it's a cultural expectation that overweight people are jolly and warm. That doesn't change because you become thinner, but during the process you will have "grumpy" days because of the life change and adjusting to a new way of life. It's kind of like quitting smoking and going through a little withdrawal. But it's temporary.

Just because your BMI is 39 doesn't mean that you don't deserve a tool that will ultimately help you achieve optimal health. My BMi is 40 and is my highest ever now due to a broken ankle last year. Actually that is what made me think surgery when in the past I'd been against it. I love the gym and worked my butt off last JAnuary and ate no processed foods , stayed below 25 g of carbs and at an average of 1200 calories a day. It took me 5 months to lose 25 lbs and I felt good then Broke my ankle and BAM up 30 lbs. I looked at the last ten years of my life and realized its a constant battle and I've spent countless hours, money, effort and I'm heavier then I have ever been. Do what you have to do to be the 40 BMI so you can get the tool you need to succeed. I realize insurance companies need a cutoff but obese is obese and at 39 BMI vs 40 we have the same issues and just want to see results when we put in the work.

I'd eat something high fat/salt to make myself bloated. Very uncomfortable, but Water retention packs on the weight.

I would straight up buy some ankle weights and wear them. I don't care who bashes me for saying so. It's so close. Don't let this door close if you have decided this is what is right for you.

I got cleared right off the bat with physic. Nutrition is the one I can't clear. I've already seen her twice. The first time was because I wasn't ready. Second time I lost what she wanted me to lose. Started working out 6 days a week. She looked at my food log and wouldn't clear me. Because I ate 2 small slices of frozen pizza.last month I would've eaten 4. I also went out to eat and had 5 French fries , last month I would've eaten 2 baskets. I was very upset, when she told me to make another appointment for 2 weeks.I was ready to quit the program.
I only need to lose about 70 lbs. I could probably do it on my own, but I don't have the dedication to keep the weight off. That's why I want the surgery.

I am having my sleeve surgery in June. I have been feeling so up and down about it..one minute I can't wait, the next, I am scared to death. Well, today was yet another reminder as to why I AM doing this. I work with 2 yr olds, I was sitting on a little chair while the kids were playing. The toy they were playing with came apart, and I needed to get on the floor to fix it. I could not figure HOW I was going to get from the chair to the floor. It's the first time that has EVER happened to me. I ended up kinda falling off the chair onto the floor. I NEVER want to feel that shame and humiliation again!!!!

On the pureed stage, I liked to do canned chicken mashed up real well with a fork, with either plain yogurt or low fat mayo added to make chicken salad. I also did refried Beans with a bit of light sour cream on top.
And I made a recipe for ricotta bake that was awesome. You can find it here at http://theworldaccordingtoeggface.blogspot.com/
She is a former WLS patient with a great success story and she has recipes on her website including ones for the pureed stage.

I wish I knew how to respond to every one individually because I would tell each and every one of you THANK YOU!
All of your comments are welcome and taken into consideration. I think I will stay close to home because I have a 7 month old and an 8 year old...my husband works ALL THE TIME IN THE OIL FIELD and is never home. I think my kids would have a complete melt down without seeing me for three or four days straight. I have never been away from my baby either. Plus if I travel I am not sure who would go with me...since I would want my parents to stay home with the kids if my husband was working.
I can't wait to start calling around and interviewing the doctors...after all it is like hiring someone for the job!
Again thank you so much for the help I really appreciate it!!!

You are definitely not alone. Before surgery I had been on so many diets and lost weight but then failed to keep it off I too was terrified that surgery would not work for me. I have PCOS and losing weight was very difficult for me. It's natural to be a little bit scared after a lifetime of weight loss failures. Now I am 6 weeks out from surgery and have lost almost 30 pounds when before surgery I wouldn't have lost 5 pounds in this amount of time. It's natural to have the fears but don't let it hold you back, the surgery works. I had 2.5 week stall and have still managed to lose that much, and am back to loosing now. Keep your head up and get the surgery, it's a lifesaver.

It's hard to understand the idea that under 40 BMI can mean you don't qualify without a co-morbidity. I have a BMI of 38, but at 6 ft tall I could lose 147 pounds and still be a normal BMI. That sure makes my 38 sound unhealthy to me! "Thankfully" I have high blood pressure. How weird to say that.

Thank you all. And I apologize for any snarkiness on my end. At my current height and weight, my BMI is 40.8. My insurance requires over 40. Im a little over 100 pounds overweight. I have been for about 18 years since gaining a massive amount of weight with my first pregnancy and then after a hysterectomy at 26. I can lose 10 pounds easy. I've done it many times. But it always comes back. I've done WW, Atkins, fitness pal, starvation, meds, you name it. I was taking kickboxing classes so I'm no stranger to fitness. I too actually gained about 7 pounds to solidify this surgery. I'd rather gain 7 to lose 100 than stay 90 pounds overweight the remainder of my life. At 42, my BP is creeping up and Im pre diabetic. It's only a matter of time before it's full blown. We have 2 adopted 5 year olds with medical needs that need there mama to be around awhile. It's very hard not to drop below the 40 BMI because 7 of the pounds are "new" and from eating total crap. I just want to get healthy and stay that way and trust me if I thought I could do it without a "barbaric surgery" I would. This actually took a lot of courage on my part as I have a history of surgeries, one that almost killed me. I swore I'd never have surgery again unless I was dying. Well, if I dont get this weight off I will be.

Not me. I decided to make the most of the six months of diet visits that my insurance required. I lost 99 pounds before the surgery day. I was ready to make a real change and get started.
