Not sure what research you are referring to on Iron? I believe the medical community to which I belong would probably disagree. I do though agree that people should check with their doctors just like with any nutritional supplement. It is well-documented in the literature that patients who undergo gastric bypass surgery tend to run low in iron and Vitamin B-12 and so most surgeons recommend taking them post-operatively and for the long run. Oral iron in the right dose is generally safe for most. After all, many Multivitamins contain iron. I am actually surprised you are not taking it. But good for you that you don't need them. You must be absorbing more nutrients than most.

I went with bypass because of GERD. I couldn't even imagine making it any worse than it was, so I definitely didn't want to risk it with the sleeve.

I've been wrestling with a similar dilemma. There was no medical reason compelling one surgery over another since I don't have diabetes or binge eat sweets. The doctor recommended sleeve because there are fewer potential complications. Also, he feels I have a higher than average risk for ulcers due to a previous ulcer.
Earlier this week I was panicking because I felt like my diet was deteriorating and maybe I needed dumping syndrome as a tool. I called and spoke to the dietician. She had me read my food diaries to her and told me she thought I was actually making reasonable decisions, and that I would do well with the sleeve.
I feel relieved. I think anxiety just increases as surgery approaches. Also, it's hard to make a decision because I don't have any experience of not feeling too much hunger for my body. So I don't know what life will be like if I don't feel that degree of hunger.
I can really empathize with your agonizing over which one, especially if two different docs are telling you two different things. My doc's reasoning was: bypass is better for diabetics, people with severe sweet cravings leading to binging, and people with serious GERD. Sleeve is the better option without those indicators, and for people with a history of ulcers. I really trust him a lot.

Alexis99 I'm too familiar with the feeling like you've eaten a bucket of cement! I saw my surgeon and even had labs and an abdominal ultrasound and everything looks great. Right now
I'm scaled back to stage 1 soft diet and eating tons of sugar free popsicles. I literally eat refried Beans for every meal. I'm also taking carafate which is like liquid chalk. Apparently we think something irritated my stomach and it's recovering?
I did try a piece of Trader Joe's turkey bacon and tolerated that.

So sorry for all of you not tolerating food yet. Bariatric Advantage has some Protein Soups that are good. I ordered these Protein Shots I'm getting tomorrow. In less than two ounces you get 20 grams of Protein. I'll update after I get them. I'm hoping it works since volume is my problem.

Glad to hear i am not the only one having trouble with food. I am almost 6 weeks out and a lot of solid food makes me sick. I have terrible slime/foam....I think it is acid reflux. I am all about a new way of being but I am getting impatient with getting sick all of the time. Sometimes it is even with Water. Thanks for the good ideas!

Hi December buddies. I'm on week 5 and last week was my first week off of mushies, soft food, and liquids. Last week I got sooo sick three times with my last meal of the day. I measure and weigh all my portions but I'm learning that certain new foods require smaller portions, longer chewing, and some just flat out need to be tried down the road, sorry ground turkey, beef, and salmon. While it feels awful when I feel sick to my stomach, it is a powerful motivator to be a more mindful eater.

I'm almost 7 months post of and I still get the slime. The slime becomes worse if something gets stuck. It's your bodies way of helping get your food down. The pain in your chest is food going down hard and or getting stuck. It literally makes my brain hate food. I'd love a big steak, but I just know it'll be painful and more than likely get stuck. The first time I got food stuck, I thought I was going to die.

I learned at my preop class that Eas Myoplex not only has more calories but has 42g Protein per serving. I'm switching up the Premier Protein (I love the vanilla even postop) with the chocolate fudge Eas Myoplex. I also got Genepure unflavored Protein, mix it with room temp Water, then microwave it and add beef bouillon while its hot. I'm postop day 3 and got 92g protein in, 540 calories, and 88oz Fluid for the day! Preop I only had I day of Clear Liquids and 6 days of a very limited diet (including food for liver shrinkage). They still used a liver retractor which caused more postop pain, but it's not so bad here on the other side!

Sorry to hear this. I'm 6 weeks postop and had the cramping too but I had a really bad episode last week after eating that had my head spinning. I'm a nurse and also noticed my stool is very light colored which I know could be a sign of gallbladder issues. Waiting for results now to see if I need my gallbladder removed. Good luck!

After surgery, I became lactose intolerant. Whenever I drank milk or anything that contained dairy products, my stomach would hurt and it lead to a quick trip to the restroom with diarrhea. This condition lasted for a couple months and then disappeared. It is common. I stayed away from dairy during this time and that is how I controlled this problem. Some Protein shakes contain dairy.
The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.
Weight loss is achieved after surgery through meal volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein Shakes. So it is extremely important that you meet your daily protein requirements and this means taking Protein Shakes daily. So since you are having problems with consuming protein shakes make sure the brand you are using is lactose free. Experiment and find a Protein shake you can tolerate. You don't have to like it only tolerate it. Food is secondary. The transition to solid foods after RNY gastric bypass surgery can be difficult, so don't rush it. My program did not let me consume solids until week 9. Consuming meat at the beginning can be very difficult especially steaks and poultry. Generally I started out with tuna fish. Some of the symptoms you are describing sound very much like dumping syndrome. So a few rules. Never eat before bedtime. Your body processes food differently in a horizontal position than in a vertical position. If you try and lay down and sleep it is impossible, so eat your evening meal early. As I transitioned to solid foods (such as chili and soups) I found that softer foods went down easier than harder foods such as steak. So I heavily relied on them and still do to some extent. I have included a few recipes at the end of the following article that you may wish to try. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

I hope things start getting better for you!! It is very hard at first. I also had a lot of scar tissue from previous surgeries. They told me that it took them 45 minutes to cut thru all of it. Did they give you pain meds? I can share something with you that has helped me even better than Gas X. It is PAPAYA ENZYMES they are 100% natural and I get them at Walmart for less than $5.00. I have been using them for the last 3 and 1/2 years but please check with your Dr first. I always chew them up and lie on my left side. I hope you get some rest and relief. So sorry

I didn't experience any knee pain. But at night I did experience leg cramps. [A muscle cramp is a strong, painful contraction or tightening of a muscle that comes on suddenly and lasts from a few seconds to several minutes. It often occurs in the legs. A muscle cramp is also called a charley horse. Nighttime leg cramps are usually sudden spasms, or tightening, of muscles in the calf.] Several threads report this condition was common after surgery. It can be caused by dehydration and also by a deficiency in vitamins/ minerals (Calcium, potassium).

horse.rider reacted to Rachel412 in Does "comfortably full" no longer exist?
Pre-surgery I was a binger. I got comfort (or at least thought I did) from that full feeling.
I'm about 6 weeks out from RNY and no, I am NOT binging. But full sneaks up on me! I'll be eating some cheese and bam, I go from fine to ow, too much.
Is this the way it'll be going forward? I'm fine with it if it is... Just wondering if full, whatever full is (right now it's between 1-2 oz) is always going to be uncomfy.

I wish I knew that abdominal pain is very common after surgery. Often the cause is not diagnosed. This is a late surgery symptom. Many forums exist about abdo pain and how it lasts for months or even years.

I just had surgery on the 28th and your right the gas pain was unbelievable. I also have a pretty high tolerance for pain but that was like nothing else I had ever experienced. The walking and moving around really helped. The pain meds didn't help. It was so bad that I was crying so they increased the dosage and frequency and that really really helped.
