To begin with, I am 2 months post op and have had a great recovery. I am one of those people that RARELY get on a scale because I know I will obsess and pretzel brain twist over the number. I don't even own a scale to be honest. Anyway, my husband and I were going to dinner last night...and instead of wearing my usual black stretchy Pallazo Pants or Yoga Pants that I desperately attempt to dress up...I decided to try an old pair of jeans on in order to "gauge" where I am (I have a closet FULL of my "thin" clothes that I could just never get rid of). Much to my amazement, the jeans FIT! They were a size 14...but they fit! And not like "busted can of biscuits" fit, but actually FIT. My ultimate goal is my size 8's that are also collecting dust in there...but dang this was a start! I haven't worn those jeans in over 5 years. I haven't worn ANY jeans in over 5 years. Once I outgrew those...I threw in the towel and gave up. What great motivation....I cried.

This topic can be very disheartening because so many people really want and or need this WLS, and some are not going to do it for the real reasons. Yes, I do believe we are food addicts that is why we needed WLS. But...each to their own right!! We can't change people. It is very sad when I hear someone say I just couldn't do without this or that after going under the knife and just kind of throwing away their perfect opportunity to get healthy and thin. When I see someone that wants to change and doesn't have the means to do it hurts. But, then someone that doesn't follow their Dr's guidelines and gets sick or in trouble with their choice it is sad!! Another, one that really gets my goat is this...I had problems with strictures and it was not by any means because I didn't follow everything my Dr and Nutritionist had told me..then someone comes on and says her problems are of her own doing!! I got that one more than once!! If you don't know what that person went thru then keep your mouth shut. Because it isn't always that person's fault because she ate wrong. BLAH BLAH sorry.

I guess what I'm trying to understand is why there's so much anger and vitriol instead of compassion and more understanding. None of us get to a place where we need surgery because we've made good choices or had 100% transparency or honesty with ourselves or with others. Sometimes there are issues that run a lot deeper with some folks than others. You just never know a person's background or story.
I also know from my own past (I'm almost nine years out) and many of my friends in the WLS community we all had experiences where when we first had surgery and were doing remarkably well, we felt invincible and full of conviction and top of the world with our choices and actions. It's easy to get to a place of high-ground when you feel that way, which is why I think it's important to remember that it doesn't always stay that way. There are always going to be times when you question others actions, and that's normal and fine. But remember, there are probably others doing the same to you. Extend the same kindness you'd want for yourself.

Being judgemental with each other NEVER helps. Support is not judgemental. Support is support. You're there through the good times and the bad listening, lending an ear, giving the best advice you can through a supportive and encouraging lens that won't further damage someone(s) already struggling.

I had my surgery June 16th 2016 and I am down 72 pounds . I am extremely happy with my decision even though after surgery I experienced vomiting throughout the summer and ended up having my gall bladder taken out in August . I really feel like having the sleeve was the best decision I ever made .

Hi new here in 36 mom if 5 kids 215 pounds a nurse and married. I have thought long and hard about this journey and know I am staying the course for me and my future health. How do I deal with my mom and husband saying this is selfish and i may die on the table leaving my kids motherless. This has been a very hard discussion for me but in my heart I feel it is for the best. I plan on having the sleeve in July

I would just tell them "I can die driving but you let me out of the house to do that every day". Anyone can die doing anything. When its your time its your time. Tell them to stop being selfish and start making this journey about you and not them.

It is up to you. The sleeve is a tool but the choice of what you will put in your mouth is yours. Were we all perfect no. You have to make up in your mind that you want to live a healthier life period. Will you still be able to have a piece of chocolate from time to time yes eventually-- but hopefully you willing to find your way to chocolate in other ways. A chocolate Protein shake or Protein Bar, a piece of 70% Cacao dark chocolate, chocolate flavored greek yogurt.
I felt the same about bread and since surgery I have not had a piece of bread nor do I want to. Does that mean I never will NO, its just right now it does not have any nutritional value to me and I would much rather focus on eating things that give me what I need. My plan allows me at this stage to have bread but in limited amounts. My continued weight loss helps drive it home that I don't really need it. When the time is right (maybe thanksgiving) I will have a 1 inch slice of cheesecake or chocolate cake I will savor and enjoy it, and move on with my life and If I think that might be a trigger food for me I'll steer clear. I never had a issue with sweets but carbs (bread of any kind) is my weakness, So I try not to eat things that I feel might trigger my cravings or desire for these foods like crackers, biscuits, croissants, English muffins and things like that.
The sleeve definitely helps with reducing hunger in turn helping you to make healthier choices but some people still complain of having been hungry or dealing with head hunger which is where your willpower to be successful and following your surgeons guidelines is essential. Good Luck to you!
