    For the 45+ crowd

Yes. I am 52 and I have a turkey neck now. The loose skin on my arms and thighs are not pleasant to look at either. Honestly, I do think I look older.

    very disappointed

Please don't quit. I understand you are very disappointed. Try to lose the weight they told you to under the guidance of a nutritionist. I know it is not easy. I spent my entire life being obese and I felt defeated many times. It wasn't until I had such serious health issues that I was forced to finally do the surgery after 40 yrs of weight problems. Good luck to you and you will get this done.

    Denial about my weight

I had the same issue. I rarely looked at myself in the mirror and when I saw myself in pics, I was absolutely disgusted. I have not been in pictures for many years. I had the sleeve in August and I am down almost 70 lbs and I still don't take pictures yet. I want to lose about 30 or 35 lbs more, but I really need to improve my self esteem. I am 52 and have struggled with weight since I was 10. People have not always been nice about it either. Good luck. You are going to do great.

What Is Your Policy on Carbs?

I stay away from the bad carbs, but I have not eliminated them completely. I mostly try to make sure I am getting in all the protein, which can be very difficult .
  5. I have lost some hair, but nothing noticeable. My hair loss started a few years ago when I had a thyroidectomy for cancer though. I don't believe this surgery has made it worse, at least not yet. I am 5 months out.

    Weird cravings!

I had cravings really bad as well. . It was summer time and I remember my husband barbecued chicken and it drove me crazy. I craved raw veggies , salad and fruit as well, lol I had a lot of other cravings on the liquid diet stage. It was not until I was able to eat solids that they were not so bad anymore.

    Meds slowing down weight loss?

It could be affecting your weight loss. I am diabetic as well, I was on insulin and 2 oral drugs. I only take Metformin now as the glimepiride does cause weight gain, as well as the insulin. I would talk to your doctor to see what you can do and if there is another med you can take instead. You are very lucky to have your A1C down so much. I am not there yet, but diabetes runs in the family, whether your heavy/thin.

    Thinking About Gastric Sleeve Surgery

I had the sleeve in August at age 52. I had life long issues with weight. My biggest problem was portion control and it has helped tremendously with that. I have not had any major side effects. I did have the runs in the beginning and at times now I have constipation. The thing you have to remember is there is no more sitting down and having a huge meal with a dessert anymore , or even a normal size portion. Those days are over. If I go out to eat, I can barely eat any of it and I take most of it home. At this point in my journey, having small meals/snacks throughout the day is what works for me. I eat healthy and focus on Protein. You are going to have to take Vitamins for the rest of your life as that is what they told me. You are also always going to have to choose foods that are high in protein. As far as how much you are going to lose, it is hard to say. You are a lot younger than I am and I also do not have a thyroid, so that was going against me. I was losing about 10 lbs a month. I chose this surgery because I had health issues and I wanted to try and live a longer life. Good luck,

    Hunger Pains?

Yes. I had the same thing happen to me right after surgery. I was actually hungry for a while, until I got onto solid foods and it got better.

    Question about activity after sleeve...

You are going to be on a lot of Vitamin supplements after surgery, for life. . I take 2 multi Vitamins a day, Calcium, b12, Vitamin D, Iron, fish oil. You must take supplements for the rest of your life as you can become deficient, which will cause tiredness. I had the sleeve done in August and it was definitely the right decision. Good luck

    Newbie

Hi. It is definitely different for those of us who are over 50. I like to hear from people my age because we sometimes lose differently than younger people and I clearly see how my skin is not going to snap back like it did when I was young. Our metabolism is definitely slower. I am still relatively new in this journey. I was sleeved in August.

Having doubts before I'm even started

I was starving on my pre op diet. . After surgery you will be on a liquid diet again, but you will get filled up on it quickly. Once you move on to full liquids you will have even more choices to eat. I found eating small meals/snacks several times a day works for me since the portion size is very small.
  13. I was pre approved before I even went to my first visit with the surgeon. That was in April. By July after finishing the program, the paperwork was submitted and approval was very fast. That was the end of July and I had a mid August surgery.

I drink at least one high protein shake a day, because I can't get the Protein in either. I do eat protein Snacks, meals, but I am eating so little of it, it is so hard to get it all in. Also, there are many people that think this is the easy way out, but we know that is not true and most people do not know enough about WLS and what you need to do. There are many things you have to give up, pre op and post op. If you can't do that, it is not going to work. My mother in law wants my brother in law to do this, but he is a drinker. You can't drink heavily with this surgery and you have to give it up for a while. There are so many things you must do in order to be successful. Definitely not easy. My surgery was in August and I am still learning what kinds of food work for me and what ones do not. I am 52. Overweight since I was 11, there was a short time during my teens to about age 20 that I maintained a normal weight. After that, the weight issue got worse each year. I already see how this was definitely the right decision to make for me.

    Priority Health insurance

I think all insurance companies demand that everything be in order. I have aetna, and they had many rules before I could be approved. Just make sure you do exactly what your surgeon's office tells you do to. I was not allowed to gain any weight during my pre op months. There are a lot of pre op testing you need to do as well, including a psych. evaluation. Most insurances require it.
