Why tell people if you think they won't support you? Now is the time to surround yourself with positivity. Skip telling him. Better for your mental health. And at least 75% of this journey is mental.

It's taken me about 4 months of therapy, a month of soul searching at the lake, a lot changes to other parts of my life that were "weighing me down" and a toe dip into OA to finally figure out my triggers and how to overcome them.
For me, much of my overeating was visual. Donuts that I bought for my son on the counter? Mine. Hubby's chips on top of the fridge? Mine. I spent last weekend rearranging my kitchen so that my triggers were hidden and all 'my' food waz in one cabinet so that I don't have to open the others. So far, so good.
    Good luck!

I recently spent a month at our summer place doing a lot of soul searching, not just about WLS but many other aspects of my life. I've been in the program toward surgery for about 7 months and thought I would be scheduled by now. Alas, I'm not. And my time waiting has been well spent...researching, writing, exploring sites like this. I have come to realize that while I only 'thought' I was ready before, I am ready AND prepared now. Good luck on your journey!

NotOnMyWatch reacted to Hammer_Down in How did you choose between bypass and sleeve?
I was unnerved by the idea that a bypass would involve rerouting and resectioning my intestines. Knowing how dangerous "leaky gut" syndrome is and how crucial your bacterial flora is for overall health made a gastric bypass too risky for me.
The more I read about long term Vitamin and mineral deficiencies, "dumping" syndrome and the increased risk of procedure itself turned me towards a less invasive procedure.
The long term differences in success between VSG and bypass are quite small. There are, of course, some health conditions that make one or the other more preferable for some patients and this is just my own opinion formed from my own reading.

@@MaryCatherine There is no way in this world I'm going to be pressured by servers or management in a restaurant for ordering what I want. If it's a $4 cup of Soup, so be it. There is no sign in the door of any restaurant I frequent that has a minimum order. I order what I want, when I want. I pay and tip generously. If the restaurant doesn't like it, they can feel free to ask me to leave. My guess is, in today's day and age, they're happy to have customers.

My Dr actually gave me a card to take to restaurants stating that I am his bariatric patient and would appreciate a child size portion of the meal I order. Which as long as you don't mind people knowing that it's a great resource as you also get charged for a child's portion. Maybe your dr could do something like that for you.

I got a card when I left the hospital that explains I had weight loss surgery please allow me to order from the smaller portion menu (kids, seniors, early diner, lunch sized) this has made life easier for me. I have not had any issues with it.

@@LisaMergs I could not agree more with ^ statements. I also waited tables for 20 years. I treated everyone the same if they order a small something or a full meal. I was not there to tell people what to eat, only to take the order and serve them what they ordered and give the best service to everyone.
I only order a full meal if i know my son at home is going to want the left overs. I don't eat leftovers that often. They don't agree with me.
I have no problem going sit in a restaurant and ordering a bowl of Soup and nothing to drink...... or i may just order a few cocktails... Depends on my mood

    Harsh.
There is no rule that says you need to spend "x" dollars just because you are sitting in a restaurant seat. It's a service industry. And yes, they're there to make money. I put myself through college waiting tables and bar tending. Never once was I pissed that one person in a party ordered less, or ordered a soda instead of a mixed drink. Never crossed my mind. It all evens out through the course of a shift.
And lest you be further mistaken, most servers DO care and will go over board to make certain you are given exactly what you need to have an enjoyable experience and eat on plan. And then, because service was exemplary, they are tipped accordingly. I've NEVER tipped 20% on a $3 bowl of soup...ever... They'll usually a minimum of 50% or more from me in gratuity.
People should NOT feel like they need to spend exorbitantly just to occupy a chair.

Get a second, third and fourth opinion.
I'm sure there's a surgeon out there that can figure out a way to perform either a sleeve or a bypass. Don't give up! And don't take that one surgeons word as the final say! I'm rooting for you!

I don't think many would say that all newbies have nothing to bring to any conversation. At least I hope not. BUT, the o/p DID state she wanted VETS opinions. Her right as a poster. If one chooses to blatently disregard that, that's on them. And hearsay isn't accepted in court for a reason. If I ask for people's experiences, I don't want to hear what happened in a book or to you mother's second cousin twice removed on your brother's side. Things get lost in translation.
That said, please be kind to one another. We're all struggling and have some level of fear. Enjoy you day!

As a colon cancer survivor myself, I can say that we are already at risk for an reoccurrence (sp?). For me, the benefits of the WLS outweighs any additional colon cancer risks.
You'll be required to have a psych consult by your insurance (most likely). Be honest during it. They might recommend CBT to help with the emotional eating issues. ( That's me too and am currently in CBT)
My program does very few bands anymore because they don't have the long term weight loss like the other surgeries. I'm leaning towards the sleeve but not ruling out RNY just yet.

    First episode opened up bigtime.
The aftermath of those developments is going to be impossible to recover from for the group.....and yet...they always do...somehow.
I was grateful that I didn't know who it was going to be. I had my guesses.
Further demonstration that the real horrors they face are other people and not the zombies.

But only people who have already succeeded with WLS and got fit would survive that world. Right now, I'd be zombie meat. I can't run lol
