Everything has moved forward very smoothly. The surgery coordinator said they have 15 days to respond but usually do so sooner. I am getting so excited. I am so ready.

I'm sorry you were denied, but don't lose faith. Insurance wouldn't cover my surgery because I didn't meet the qualifications, so I went the self-pay route and had the VSG in Mexico. The total cost was $4200, which included two nights at the Marriott. Had I been able to go through insurance my out-of-pocket expenses would have actually been higher. I had a really positive experience in Mexico, no complications, and have met my goals. My endocrinologist had agreed in advance to provide followup care locally.

So I want to keep this private. And I'm so not a private person. My boss is also a friend so if I tell her I need some time off for minor surgery she may ask what for. I was thinking of saying a hernia. Your thoughts.

I told my husband and 2 friends, even my son doesn't know.
Everyone else I just said I had to have stomach surgery (I had a long history of stomach issues so no one really questioned it). I needed some help here and there from my mom and she would inquire about my diet (typical nosy mother). I just told her that there were stitches in my stomach and I had to be really careful for a while. She is super thin and has always been on me about my weight so she's not so secretly happy that my surgery is causing me to lose some.
I became a total recluse at my highest weight (I gained 40 lbs in 6 months) so luckily a lot of people hadn't seen me at my biggest and haven't even noticed my loss.
I'm a private person and most of my friends know that and don't push it. My husband is the exact same way so he totally understands and hasn't told anyone.
    Not their business!

Not disclosing accurate health information to an insurance company is dishonest (and criminal), not disclosing it to your doctor is stupid, but not disclosing it to people who have no right to know it is neither dishonest or deceptive.

I am not telling either- I know they will try to talk me out of it. My hubby knows and is fully supportive. I have told one friend and her husband bc she was sleeved a year and a half ago- she inspired me to do it and she is kind of my mentor in the whole process. Maybe I will tell after the fact- maybe not. It's noone's business but mine. I plan on just saying the same business about working with my doc/nutritionist, low carbing, exercising etc.... it will all be true.
I am a bit worrried about energy loss after surgery bc I am an aid in a kindergarten classroom though! Bring on the B12. Non

    @@Miss Impala

I appreciate your point of view and I applaud your decision to take care of yourself.

I am one of those who decided not to share and a few of your thoughts stood out prominently to me. First and foremost, you used the word ashamed repeatedly. I am not at all ashamed of my decision. I am not sure where my desire for privacy equates to shame.

Also, I have no desire to be "an example" for fellow fatties out there. I was obese for 20 years. I knew the options. Diets, exercise, surgery -- I'd researched every single one and I didn't need anyone telling me what the next best thing was going to be for me. The people I know who are of size also know about their options. It's up to them to decide when to exercise those options.

As for not "doing it on my own"? Who did it for me? I had the surgery. I did the exercise. I followed the plan. I weighed and measured my food. I followed my pre-op diet for a month and was on liquids and mushies (without straying off plan) for 8 weeks post op. I didn't eat solid foods for three months post op and I worked my ass off to lose my weight. I've worked even harder to keep it off for three years.

No one has done this for me. I did it. And because of that, I get to be ecstatically private about it.

Good for you recognizing your self worth and worth to others IN PERSPECTIVE.
There is NO REASON- unless you're planning on being the WLS poster child, that one needs to sing this from the rooftops.
You are a wonderful, caring person, and how it shines through right here---I can only imagine it does so 10fold in real life ❤️

At first, I was really bashful about sharing about the surgery. I kept it a secret, but after a while, I was just so proud of all the hard work I had to tell people! Now I wear it like a badge of honor. I made the decision to change my life and save my life! People have crap to say always, but I want to encourage people to be brave in taking control of their own health. I love talking about it now.
Protect yourself. Ultimately, this is about you. If you have family that will not be supportive, don't share. If you have friends who would cheer you on and cheer you up on hard days, share away. Most importantly, don't let it be a source of shame for you. YOU made the awesome decision to change your life. You are putting in all the work. The surgery is a tool to that success.
And if you don't have anyone in your life right now you could openly talk about it with, share with us! I will for sure cheer you on.

The things I wish I knew before surgery are:
    1. Get the Vitamin Patches.
    2. Avoid the Protein shakes as much as possible - try to get as much Protein from real food as you can.Your taste buds will change.
    3. Fluids are a constant struggle, have a variety of options available.
    4. An ice pack was my best friend while recovering.
    5. You will have several incisions and they do take time to heal.
    6. It's difficult to lay on your right side. (I'm 6 weeks out & still can't lay on my right side).
    7. powders?utm_source=BariatricPal&utm_medium=Affiliate&utm_campaign=CommentLink" target="_ad" data-id="1" >unjury Protein powder taste great in chicken Soup.
    8. GENEPRO is a good Protein Powder but be careful what you mix it with.
    9. Any local support groups you can attend are very beneficial.
    10. Every day it will get a little bit better.

This is my first post, I've been lurking for over two months, hi everyone! I took a look over at the post op boards and some of what people were saying has me second guessing the amount of time I plan on taking off.
I am a teacher and my time off is unpaid. I only planned on taking off one week. Any advice? Am I crazy?

I am in the same boat. I had the sleeve in November 2010. I lost 83 pounds in 7 months but then I got pregnant (after YEARS of infertility and at 40 years old!). During my pregnancy I discovered that I had breast cancer so I went throug surgeries and chemo. Now that I am a breast cancer survivor, I now have Barrett's esophagus (pre-cancer) and my acid reflux is OFF THE CHARTS HORRENDOUS!! I am in the process of trying to get a revision to roux n y because of the acid. I am also nervous and not looking forward to doing the liquid diet and starting all over with everything but I'm terrified of getting cancer again! I'm in Baltimore, MARYLAND.
