  1. About to head into week 5, and that means whole pieces of meat. One step closer to a "normal" diet.

I don't actually know, I haven't weighed since my last doctor's appointment, which was a little over two weeks ago. I will record my weight again at my next doctor's appointment, whenever that is :) The scale has always been my enemy when it comes to weight loss, it affects me mentally too much. So I'm not in any hurry to weigh!

Whole pieces of meat? Raw, no doubt. I sense the approach of a raging lion.

  2. Ahh, beef jerky. Good protein source (if a little sodium-heavy) and more importantly, I have to chew, chew, chew...

I really like the Perky Turkey Jerky brand. It's much juicier and softer than other kinds of jerky I've tried. 2-3 oz works as a portion for me. It's pretty much all the carbs I'd like to have in a day though so I just keep an eye on that.

I went through a jerky phase...yum! Its out right now with my stomach being such a jerk, but in my head I still love it!

      PorkChopExpress

I'm glad it went okay with my stomach! It was just one of those "I'll give it a try" things, now that I'm free to try stuff.

  3. Dealing with a weird bout of insomnia all of a sudden. Can't sleep, for the life of me...wide awake all night.

Yeah I've been reading about it online, it appears to be a fairly common thing. I guess there's all kinds of changes happening chemically in my body right now, it stands to reason there's going to be some weirdness.

Pay attention, but don't freak. On the other hand, there are some really cool advantages from a hormone surge if your able to tap into Adolescence part II. It can be fun now that you know what to do with it.

    4. PorkChopExpress

      PorkChopExpress

Doesn't feel hormonal, I'm not any more "charged up" in that way than usual. It's just being "awake" - but last night was the first time it's really happened to me. I'm assuming it's related to metabolism.

  4. Feeling low energy the past couple days. Getting all my vitamins, water and protein...just feel a little sluggish and need more sleep, so I have been sleeping in. Still going strong at the gym though.

Hope you get to feeling better soon!

      ShelterDog64

Are you eating mainly protein? If I go into ketosis, I get super sluggish and tired after about 5-7 days of it. I add some carbs in until I start feeling more energetic.

    3. PorkChopExpress

      PorkChopExpress

My meals are generally split between protein and carbs pretty well, I probably get 1 1/2 TBSP of carbs (usually some kind of potato) per meal. Haven't really been able to do much in terms of fruit, though. I may need to up the carbs just a tad and see if that helps. I've just been trying to put more emphasis on protein from meats.

  5. Finally had time to get my computer set back up in CO, over a week after the move. No rest for the weary...and I AM weary.

Welcome back. ^^ Sleep well tonight when you do. hehe

  6. Finding it challenging to get all my fluids, now that I'm eating three meals a day. My stomach is still pretty slow to digest my meals.

  7. First real food meal after surgery and man, was I thankful for it. No problems!

What did you have? Tell me it wasn't pizza, popcorn, or porkchops!

    2. PorkChopExpress

      PorkChopExpress

I had about 1/8th of a cup of Hormel chili, four cut green beans from a can, and a couple tsp of fruit puree I got at Trader Joe's. That was enough! Today at breakfast I had one egg scrambled with some seasoning, and a Tbsp of peaches.

    3. LipstickLady

      You're doing great!

  8. Five days till I leave CA and rejoin my family in CO. Been here for 18 years and the only thing about CO I didn't miss was the snow. Hopefully I'll find work!

      PorkChopExpress

Yeah, and with less "natural insulation" now, that cold is going to BITE me :) Living in LA never really connected with me. I like certain things about it, but not enough to stay forever.

  9. Getting used to eating these tiny portions. I'm chewing longer and appreciating it more. Good habits to get into!

    1. ProudGrammy

      ProudGrammy

good for you!!! "they" say after you do "anything" for 30 days - it becomes an official habit - chewing longer, eating less etc are great new habits to always follow - keep up the good work - kathy

    2. WLSResources/ClothingExch

      WLSResources/ClothingExch

Have you noticed that more thorough chewing releases more flavor? Too bad it also reveals that some things taste not good.

    3. PorkChopExpress

      PorkChopExpress

I have a feeling that my eating habits enabled me to eat a bunch of stuff that probably doesn't taste real good if you really sit and chew it for a while. You're right grammy - I'm taking this opportunity to establish some new, positive eating habits By the time the day comes that my portion sizes are a little more "normal" looking, I should be totally re-trained :)

  10. Got my order of Genepro protein, it's not TOTALLY flavorless but close enough! No more shakes, thank goodness.

The taller, thinner canister is Gen 2. I use it religiously in my morning coffee, like @Sai. I was wondering if a man can get his hand into the narrower canister? My first 2 rounds of Genepro came in the short, squat one.

    3. Sai

      Sai

@ShelterDog64 Ahh thank you! I didn't know how to tell between the two. My bottle is still the short, squat one, darn hehe.

@OutsideMatchInside It does, but the sugar per serving is not too high. My dietician specified that I shouldn't exceed 6g of sugar per MY serving size (not box label serving size) and at 1.5oz of this meat, it works out to 3g of sugar. So not bad at all and I suffered no ill effects.

    3. OutsideMatchInside

      OutsideMatchInside

Cool, I might have to look at it next time I am in there

    4. PorkChopExpress

      PorkChopExpress

I have found several good meats in Trader Joe's, I also like the frozen turkey meatballs. One of those is roughly 1.3-1.4 grams, it ends up being a perfect amount for a meal.

  12. Had some peanuts tonight, chewed to a paste. They sat for a while, still kind of hard to digest I guess.

    1. Sai

      Sai

Yeah they really sit in our stomach for quite some time. They are a great source of protein though :D. I love pistachios but the calories add up for me hehe.

  13. Had to punch some new holes in my belt...the pants are getting loose.

    3. PorkChopExpress

      PorkChopExpress

It's funny though, because I have never worn my pants right...they're always way too low, because I didn't really have a "waist" to put it around. So I'm punching these new holes, but I know at a certain point I'm going to have to start bringing my pants up to my ACTUAL waist, and then go back up a bunch of notches. I'm already doing that with my jeans...but the good thing is, at my actual waist, I'm on the same hole I was on when I had them much, much lower at 385lbs. So that's a good NSV too :)

      PorkChopExpress

Well, combine the pre-op diet with the two weeks post-op and yeah...the weight loss has been pretty quick. But I also have a lot left to lose! :)

  18. It's getting so much easier to discriminate between what's REALLY good and what's not all that good. I guess chewing for so long is part of that, but I also just don't like wasting meals anymore.

    1. ShelterDog64

      ShelterDog64

I'm finding this to be true as well. I used to just want/need food, didn't care if it was high quality or not. Now, I'm not even interested in crappy food. If I only get 5-10 bites at a meal, I want them to be GOOOOOOD bites!

    2. The New Kel

      The New Kel

I totally agree. Sometimes I find myself trying something, chewing and deciding its not worth it and spitting it into the trash. Gross I know, but I want every bite to be quality and count.

    3. Sai

      Sai

Agree. We have this tiny sleeve that craves the absolute most nutritious food to survive. The body is an amazing thing if we really listen to it.

  19. It's nice to notice the little things about losing weight...the difference in how it feels walking up steps, or the much-reduced pain in my bad Achilles.

    1. heidikat72

Little things but so so so awesome things. I slightly remember having serious knee pain. I totally forgot about it, and then someone would ask "How's your knees?" Ohhh yeah. :)

  20. It's such a weird disconnect mentally now, getting the satisfied/full feeling on so little food!

2 years later and I still grab too much, but I'm getting better all the time at knowing when to stop.

    3. PorkChopExpress

      PorkChopExpress

LipstickLady, that'll be a good problem to have :) But it's mentally kind of a challenge to overcome my predisposition toward large portions. Even though I'm satisfied with a little, somehow my brain still wants MORE. The idea that I could only eat like, one baby back rib is hard to wrap my brain around, right now!

    4. LipstickLady

      LipstickLady

Yup! That takes a long time to defeat.

  21. Just discovered that Taco Bell will sell you a small container of steak or chicken, solo. Nice!

    1. Sai

      Sai

That's good to know in case of an emergency :D

    2. PorkChopExpress

      PorkChopExpress

Yeah I was running late last night and couldn't pack my food for work. Ran over and just asked while I was ordering pintos, whether they would be able to sell me a little container of steak and he immediately said, "No problem." I guess they actually have it in the register. Must be a bunch of weight loss surgery patients out there who just want the protein :)

    3. Sai

      Sai

hehe I'm sure there are a LOT of us out there. That is really good to know though!

  22. Just discovered that the smallest container of Green Bean Chicken at Panda Express is almost the perfect size for one meal, now. I shudder to think about what a perfect meal there USED to look like, for me.

      KeepCalm

I can tell you what it used to be for me - double plate entrée with white rice. I'm good with the smallest container now :)

    3. PorkChopExpress

      PorkChopExpress

Mine was triple entree with chow mein, maybe a chicken egg roll, and an extra large Pepsi. Seems so obscene now lol :) @LipstickLady I think it's awesome that whereas I used to end up spending $12-14 on a meal, it's now like $3. That's awesome. I'm not to where I can eat enough to do the kids' meal, but I suspect after a few more months, that's what I'll be doing, too!

    4. LipstickLady

      LipstickLady

I can't eat an entire kids meal. Fortunately it's already packaged to go!
