sleevedprincess got a reaction from MemphisWLS in What did you all take to the surgery?
I packed a full bag and didn't use anything but my phone. I had my hair tied down and the hospital provided everything else. Body wash, deodorant, robe, slippers, tooth brush, tooth paste, lotion and even underwear. I'm sure Aetna will pay dearly for it lol

Don't weigh yourself. You'll drive yourself crazy with the scale in the first several weeks. Because of the IV fluids and trauma of surgery, your body trying to heal, etc. your weight on the scale will do very odd things and it can be psychologically hard to see the numbers on the scale when they don't reflect the reality of your food intake and so on. Just stay off it for the first four weeks after surgery is my advice.
And I could not tell you how much I lost in the first week because "stay off the scale for four weeks post-op" was what my team told me to do. I had faith that I was following my plan correctly and the weight would come off, fast or slow.
    Good luck!

Well here I am on the other side of surgery. It has been 31 days. I came home the 23rd and weighed 370. Today I am 348 after 31 days post op. I feel fantastic!!
I went to my primary yesterday. I have lost 84 pounds since I started this process this year. He is saying that when I come back in a month he is going to see if we can't take diabetes off my medical history. He is also thinking about cutting out my gout medication and reducing my blood pressure meds. This is awesome news.
I already am running out of clothes to wear. For the first time in my life, I ordered a pair of jeans from Woman Within. I even used my current measurements to pick what size I should get. Well, when they came, I put them on, buttoned them and zipped them only to find I could pull them off without doing anything. Needless to say, I returned them. Then on a whim I went to Walmart and bought the largest pair of Just My Size sweats and they fit me! I have NEVER been able to shop at Walmart for clothes...never!
Folks, let me tell you, I would highly recommend this procedure if you are thinking about it. It is amazing and I feel amazing, I definitely would do it again.
Also, look at my before and after pictures I posted in my profile. You can see my progress so far.

After the last incident we had here, I had to detach or stop posting. This is my only connection to surgery so I still need to post here, so I detached.
Everyone doesn't have the same education level or investment in surgery, and most importantly people don't have the same outlook on life.
While the app is great and it makes the forum accessible to lots of people that would never come here otherwise, but it is also terrible because there are lots of people that come here that would never come here otherwise.
I just say my opinion and move on.
A lot of people that post here remind my of my associate that had RNY. Never changed eating habits, still eats sugar with wild abandon, never cooks. And every day is a struggle for this person. They have regained, and in the next few years will probably regain all the way back to their previous weight, because they keep gaining and are unable to make any lasting changes. They keep asking me what I do and I have told them over and over and over again. This person cannot or will not make any real life changes, I can't keep investing myself in trying to help them. It is making me crazy. Every week they ask me the same things and say they need to make a change, only hours later to go out to eat instead of going to the grocery store. They are full of excuses, and even they admit their excuses are ridiculous. People have to do it for themselves.

I get it. Sometimes I'm incredulous and other times I manage to look the other way. The latter is more productive for me. It's one thing to waste time on myself, quite another to waste it on a stranger. Yet I know I'll be sucked in again. A favorite are the ones hoping not to be required to lose weight pre-surgery, preferring to keep gorging until the OR. They get major huffy when I write that surgery is a grown-up proposition and losing weight prior announces that one is serious.
Hope you feel better for ranting.

    You put in the time.
    You put in the money.

You go to all the appointments and you jump through all the hoops.
    You do the pre-op diet.

    You have the surgery.

You cared enough about yourself to make the commitment to WLS and you physically and permanently alter your body...

And then you get mad because someone tells you not to eat the d@mn taco? Not to drink alcohol or soda 2.783 days after surgery? To put down the freaking pizza'? To stop eating bread/rice/pasta/bananas/hoagies/20oz steaks TEMPORARILY while your body heals and you get to your goal weight? To actually stick to YOUR doctor's plan?

Even better, you get mad when they only do so AFTER you ASKED????

    SERIOUSLY PEOPLE?

Yes. I'd guess most of us have head hunger and cravings. I'd guess most of us had a nibble or sip of something off plan. I've no doubt that most of us were not 100% compliant 100% of the time. But I'd also guess that those of us who have done this, gotten to goal weight and stayed there have been compliant the majority of the time. I'd also guess that many of us who have been successful would appreciate a swift kick in the rear if/when we ask a question I bet we already know the answer to.

It's not rocket science and this isn't Romper Room. Make good choices, stick to your doctor's orders or don't, but don't get mad if you fail to get the results you want when you refuse to do what you are supposed to do. And don't get mad when someone tells you that what you are putting in your mouth isn't the best idea in the world even though you want it right now.

Value yourself more than that. Seriously.

The waiting for approval seems like the worst (mine was fear one of my 2 insurance companies would say Nope not gonna happen. ).After all the time doing the pre required thing's .I know a lot of them make ppl wait for 6 months to a year so I am not complaining.
If you're still waiting hang in there. .

She spoke to a nurse supervisor and I had my approval within 4 hours. Looking at November 15th as my surgery date. November 1st if there is a cancellation. Stay off the scale. That is the absolute BEST advice you can receive in the first month or two post-op. This period should be about healing, recovering, getting your Protein and Water in, taking your Vitamins, walking as much as possible, and advancing through your food stages appropriately. Your body will need time to adjust and adapt to all of the trauma and change it has experienced. It may react by retaining water, clinging to every calorie, dropping weight rapidly, or any other combination of things. There is no way to predict or control how your body will react in these early weeks. All you CAN control is that you stick to your plan and follow all of your instructions to the letter.

It's been thirteen months since I had the VSG, and besides my physicians the only three people who know about it are my parents and my husband. Not my best friend since I was 11, not my brother, not my colleagues. I never discussed having surgery with anyone else, so I didn't have to come up with an explanation. No one else has had a need to know, and I haven't had a need for them to know. If you want to tell people, by all means do so, but if you want to keep it private, know that it's absolutely your prerogative and feel at peace with the decision.
If you're doing a pre-op diet and people ask you about it, you can simply say it's a diet. If you're going to be missing time at work, you can tell people you need to take some personal leave days, or vacation, or sick leave, or whatever. No one at work is entitled to know specifics. You could be taking time off for a host of reasons. I'm about to take time off to have my wisdom teeth removed, and I'm not disclosing that either, even though it's a common surgery. I just don't feel the need. That's all. It's not lying to not disclose healthcare matters, it's keeping something that is personal private. Once you let out something that is private, you can lose control over it because people can tell others, sometimes just by letting it slip out. My concern was that it would mean having to devote energy to explaining the surgery and calming concerns others might have instead of putting my focus into doing everything I needed to be prepared for success. I do get asked a lot about my weight loss now, because I've gotten down to a size 2. I tell people who ask the truth - by using MyFitnessPal to track everything I eat, and biking to work instead of driving.
    Best wishes to you!

I didn't have to "lie" because I really didn't tell people I was having any kind of surgery all and I had basically zero downtime so no one missed me. All my real friends know, so there is no lying to them, everyone else are just random strangers.
You should really rethink considering it "lying". You are protecting your privacy from nosey ass people asking questions that are none of their business. We have HIPPA laws for a reason. Medical issues shouldn't be open issues for people to question, it is so impolite it baffles me that people ask these questions.
