cyndi990 reacted to July1416 in Sleeved July 14 th. 2016
Didn't want to have surgery, but new I couldn't do it on my own. Finally gave in. After the surgery I was not happy. The pain and nausea was bad. But next day I went home. For 3 days I couldn't really stomach anything. I wanted so bad to gulp Water. But it was to painful for that. I took it slow.
Second and third week I felt like I was starving. I realized I wasn't getting enough Protein. Everybody is different on what they can eat and digest, during the different phases.
The day I was to go home, a girl two beds down from me had the same surgery. So I asked her if we could exchange phone numbers. She said yes and it has been great. We've helped each other threw the last 6 months. I asked her what she was eating and I told her what I was eating or not eating. It was a fantastic support person.
It's been 6 months since surgery. I'm so glad that I went threw surgery. I would do it again. After the 2 ND week things got a little easier. You lose a lot the 1 at month. Looking back it was trial and error on what my stomach would allow and not. I would say it took me 3 to 4 months to get up enough strength to go back to work. After awhile the weight loss slowed down. I had to start adding some form of exercise. I found biking. I got a large padded seat for my bicycle. I started out slowly. 2 miles a day around the neighborhood. I worked up to 4 miles a day. I would ride in the evening when it cooled down outside. Live in Bakersfield and it gets blazing hot. I didn't work for 4 Months and it was summer for my kids.,so I had time to do all this. My kids went riding with me for support and my husband also when he was off work. I got up to 9 miles a day. My kids went back to school and I was able to find a job where I went in at 10 am. So now 5 to 6 days a week I drop the kids at school and then get on my bike and do a 4 mule loop around the neighborhood. Then shower and go to work.
I started this journey last year in. August. I went to the initial consultation. Then wait a month to set up a date to go for it. My insurance at that time wanted 6 months of nutrition counseling before they would do the surgery. Well I finally got the the counseling. It was just one phone call a month. I finally braved up and scheduled my surgery for June. Then chickened out a few days before it was to take place. My husband was more scared then I was. I worked at a hospital at the time. I talked to a lot of nurses that had the surgery. Well I finally did it on July 14 TH. I was 262 lbs August 2015. Now I'm at 190. I'm losing about 10 lbs a month. Which is fine. It's coming off slow and staying off. My I'm doing small goals, so I don't get depressed. My final goal is 170- 160. So I've lost a total of 72 lbs in 1 year. I was 242 the day of surgery. I had lost a little on my own. They said I needed to.
Also, she said that if I lost 10 lbs before surgery, I would only have to do a week of just liquids instead of 2 weeks. I didn't really make it threw just liquids, but things went fine. I'm 47 years Old. MY surgery buddy was 23 years old. She did lose faster than me, but everybody's different. But we still helped each other.
Hope this helps someone. I still fighting exercise and watching what I eat, but it's a life change and it doesn't happen overnight and it takes time to retrain the brain. I still want fatty foods. If I eat to much fattening food, I do more exercise. Or I eat less the next few days. It's give and take.

I've been through this with a few of my friends, I had wanted to keep it to only a few people until after the surgery. One of my friends told everyone else about it in an attempt to persuade me not to get it.It was disappointing because I have tried on my own all my life and needed a little support. My weight constantly fluctuated and I decided I need this for myself. My friends who have tried to convince me not to get it don't understand. None of them have been or are obese. My surgery is scheduled for the 27th of December, (23 days away!) and I only really bother to talk to people who are being supportive of my decision. It really sucks, but I think people who are not supportive just don't understand. I hope you make your decision based on what you feel is best for you, good luck!

    @@Didjit
I'm not a guy but most of the things that are issues or concerns post-op are only for a short time. The lack of capacity and the limited drinking at once, is short term. Once you are healed at 6 months, you have more capacity. At a year you can eat normal healthy portions. I was worried before surgery that I would always feel like I was strange of different from other people, but I fit in better with the world now, than I ever did before. I eat like a health conscious person, and that never stands out.
I think your partner is just scared for you. Working in the hospital, they are only going to see the bad cases. All the successful healthy people never see the ER. I certainly have never been to the ER since surgery.
Your partner doesn't have to carry this excess weight, you have to. If you want the surgery, have the surgery.

At BMI of 42, you're not just obese, you're morbidly obese, and at just about my starting size. You're not just fat, you're at a dangerously unhealthy weight that is inviting diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, etc.
I call absolute bull$hit on your husband. The surgery doesn't "fail," patients "fail to change their behavior." If his OR is seeing "lots of re-dos," what that tells me is that the surgeons/hospital are not properly preparing patients for the procedure (ie., setting them up to fail).
You're 50 and morbidly obese. Ask your husband if he wants you to die within the next 5-10 years, maybe it'll change his mind. If it doesn't, maybe you need a different husband.
I'm 4 days out and this is the best I've felt in so many years. My only regret was not doing it 5 years ago.

    Hi All,
I haven't been on this app in years. I was sleeved (after having my lap band removed) in 2013. It's been a while. I've had to reconnect bc of weight gain, oh yeah it's real. I'm 5' 9" HW: 259...left: 170 cw:201....when I saw that number over 200 I almost passed out. I just came back from my nutritionist and that was hard bc I've had to relive my worst fear. I will not go back. I've signed up for several 5ks, 10k's and half marathon over the next year. I'm currently walking on an incline on the treadmill bc that burns the calories the fastest. I've paid for weight training and hot yoga, which I will implement over the next few weeks. I will not go back. I've come way too far. But I need support. So if anyone has advice, pls share. My motivation is here bc of fear but I'd like it to stay bc I'm comfortable with how I'm challenging myself.

Hi, I had my operation Monday morning and have been back home since Thursday. Doing pretty well. No bad pain, haven't vomited or felt nauseated, walking a bit more every day. Still want a nap most days.
It's quite an adjustment. I'm never hungry. During my scheduled meals I'm averaging 2 oz. of food down in about 25 minutes.

When I first got my CPAP, I HATED IT! I could only sleep with it a couple of hours at best. Now I actually like the damn thing! I have severe sleep apnea and the quality of my sleep now is like 70% better I'd say. I actually can't fall asleep without it now! The rhythmic breathing it encourages and the gentle hum of the air pressure lulls me to sleep. It took awhile for my sinuses to toughen up and to not get tangled but you will get used to it! And hopefully you won't need it forever. My mask is a simple nose mask, nothing like the one shown. I just had to train myself to keep my mouth closed or the air would rush out my mouth and wake me up! Now the worst is leaks from around the edges of the mask. Pfffttt! If I keep it clean and replace regularly, it's fine.

I am so happy today I was sleeved this time last year on this day at 387 pounds and felt like I was headed to my death bed if I didn't make some changes. This is by far the best decision I have ever made for myself. I hit onederland (199) today as well and have surpassed all of my surgeons expectations. That is a total weight loss of 188 pounds and from a size 32 to a 14 in 1 year never thought I would see the scale for myself under 200 again. I feel great I exercise everyday and I am not dying of starvation! LOL! The best part is I think for the 1st time in my adult life I am truly happy and not just hiding behind a smile.

I called my story still hanging in there because I believe I will battle food the rest of my life. It's OK though because I'm learning to manage my addiction and I won't lose. So, 7 years ago I weighed 295 pounds. I was sad and uncomfortable and I wanted to change. I heard about lap band and decided that is what I needed to do. I went back and forth for about a year before I did it. There was a mourning process, but I survived! It hasn't always been easy, but truthfully I hadn't had the problems many people have had. I will answer questions or just be support

It can be pretty overwhelming...what type of diet does your patient information suggest? Are you encouraged to eat high Protein, low carb, low fat? All of those?
I didn't have an official pre-op diet that I had to follow, but I cleaned up my eating in the month or two before surgery. I cut out Desserts entirely and eliminated the few sodas I drank. I stopped eating any chips, pretzels, crackers, etc. I stopped eating Bagels, muffins and most bread. I tried to focus on Protein, whole grain carbs and fresh vegetables and fruits. I ate dairy, but quit buying low/no fat versions at the suggestion of one of my dietitians.
It wasn't as hard as I expected and it made the transition to post-op life much easier.

I just had surgery on Halloween and I honestly don't know how people cheat. Just getting in my Protein Shakes and Water every day is a struggle. I don't feel hungry at all. I have no cravings. And the fear of getting a leak or rupturing something keeps me from trying anything not approved. Don't get my wrong, I know eventually I will heal up and be able to eat more variety and volume, I will just do my best to never add back the bad stuff. Right now I am determined to be successful. I don't want to have had major surgery for nothing.

I had my gastric sleeve done January 11th. I weighed 333.1lbs.
I'm 10 months post op now and weigh 144.2lbs.
I've set new goal weights as I've gone along...first was just to get under 200lbs, then I thought I wanted my goal weight to be 180lbs. When I got there, I made the crazy goal of 150lbs never thinking I'd make it....but I did. So then I figured my goal would be 145lbs which puts me at a normal bmi...which I haven't been since I was around 10.
Now that I weight 144lbs, I've decided my final goal will 133lbs, which will mean I will have lost a total of 200lbs....and I'll do it, I know I can.
I never thought when I had surgery that weighing in the 130's would even be possible.
I've gone from wearing sizes 5-6x, and 28-30, now I wear smalls and mediums and am a size 8....I would be around a 6 if it wasn't for the large amount of skin I have around my stomach and thighs....but it's a price I'm more than happy to pay.
I've been extremely disciplined this whole 10 months. I can honestly say I've never put a bad food in my mouth...not once. I follow a very low carb diet still, drink about 85oz of Water every day and get in around 80oz of Protein. I take all my required Vitamins daily.
The gym has become a big part of my life. I workout around 5-6 days per week doing a variety of exercising....spin class, step  class, yoga, cardio machines....I like doing different things so I don't get bored.
Anyway, because I'm so close to goal, I just wanted to share this. And for the people who have a lot of weight to lose like I did....remember, you can do this! I'm living proof!!

I am currently averaging 160-163...I think its mostly Water weight, but not matter what type of weight it maybe, it psychologically distributing. Other than that, life has been great. Still pretty much control my eating and exercise. I never really made it to my goal of 153, but I was close enough. Now my goal is just to maintain. I feel great, very active and not afraid to leave the house. This was the best decision done .

I'm having a problem with is sticking to a diet plan, I would like to lose 10-15 lbs before the sergury. My fitness pal is not working for me . I need more structure . Maybe I should go back to Weight Watchers I had some success with them in the pass. Nut said as long as I don't gain weight I will be ok. Thanks for the reply.

I have BCBS PPO of Michigan. I went to the intro class that was very informative. My insurance required me to have 6 months of meeting with my PCP and her discussing the surgery with me (she really just gave her opinion but she agreed to submit a letter on my behalf of the surgery) I have been her patient for 14 years so she's seen my struggle of the Yoyo dieting and the aches and pains I deal with. I'm 5'5 240 lbs but I also have sleep apnea, fibromyalgia, high blood pressure and PCOS....but the insurance company only cared about the sleep apnea, the BMI (they wanted 40 but I was at 39.5 but the sleep apnea diagnoses gave me .5 Lol) and my doctors consent and a psych eval.
Call your insurance company and they will tell you what all is covered and what is required and copay amounts before you start. That's what I did. I have my psych Eval next weekend and I'm ready.
Best of wishes to you lady!!
