Succinctity got a reaction from dvmp61 in Dr Borland - Louisiana
This may be a little late for your original question, but Dr. Borland performed my surgery last Tuesday, 08/09/16. He was about as personable as I've ever seen a surgeon be and doesn't waste much time with non-essentials either in the consultations or on the day of surgery. I saw him in July for a consult and had the surgery four weeks later, so we bustled along.
The surgery was outpatient at New Iberia Surgery Center. I was really pleased with their facilities and most of the staff members were great. My intake nurse couldn't get the IV in on first or second try and it was hella painful, but I have small and cantankerous veins so ymmv. The good news is the IV stick was probably the most painful part of the whole process. I had only the smallest amount of nausea the night of the surgery (was back at the hotel by then) and while I've had some light pain and discomfort when standing in my large incision at the belly button, nothing has been debilitating. The nursing team the assistant anesthetist (I think he was a CRNA, but not certain) were generally and very attentive.
Dr. Borland came to see me at the hotel on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, checked all my vitals and the incisions, and said I could leave Thursday and he thought I'd be just fine or I could stay another night and he'd come back to see me again. I chose to leave because I missed my bed and the comfort of home. I handled the 4 hour drive back home on Thursday really well, no nausea like I'd feared. I did take the pain med for the trip because I wanted to be sleepy to help it pass easier.
Dr. Borland cleared me for full liquids a little early--starting tomorrow, Saturday, and I'm looking forward to that. My stomach has been talking to me a LOT but I haven't really felt any hunger. I'm pretty tired but not exhausted like I expected to be.
There was no coddling and little coaching, which suits me well enough, but if someone wants an involved team where you have a surgeon, GP, nutritionist, therapist, etc., all managing a detailed plan of care--Borland isn't for them. There are follow-up appointments and you can call him any time at work, at home, or via a pager, but it's very self-managed and that can be daunting.
Overall, I'm really happy with the experience, for whatever it's worth just three days out!

I remember the feeling well and it's really not hunger.....It's your stomach healing.....it can't really even properly communicate with your brain right now other than to say "WTH just happened?"
At this point you should just be eating on a schedule based on what your plan says. Measure your food (I imagine it's full liquids right now) and eat only the amount your plan calls for. The reason for that is your stomach really can't tell you when it's full right now....so small amounts very slowly.....on a schedule.
I'm 3 months post surgery and my stomach still grumbles sometimes after I eat but I think it's just working on digesting....don't really know, but it's not painful just annoying sometimes if I'm in a quite place and everyone around me hears it..haha .....just know that just because your stomach growls it doesn't mean you're hungry......
Congrats on your surgery....stick to your eating plan and know that each day is better.
    Take Care,
    Kathy

I'm 3 weeks out and my Nut said I can have watermelon. So I cube it and dip it in non flavored Protein Powder. It's delicious! And fun way to get your Protein, who doesn't just love a dipping treat

So I just went through my closet and purged EVERYTHING pre-sleeve. (Except one reminder outfit and a couple sentimental things)
I literally have nothing from my past that I can wear. I am about a size 14 right now, down about 100 pounds and still in process. I haven't been a size 14 since school - and that was more than 25 years ago!
I have donated about 20 bags of clothes!
But I did keep my old HS jacket!!

It feels so freeing to be rid of all that old baggage!!

A couple things really hit home from your original post.
First is that you did a tremendous amount of research pre-op and put a lot of time and effort into making this decision. It certainly was well thought out.
The second thing that really struck a similar chord with me is your comment, "I myself am only 9 weeks post op and have had complications so I can't know what my future holds." I want to really key in on this.
I didn't really feel alive and vibrant until somewhere between my 2nd and 3rd month. Prior to that the diarrhea, rumbling stomach, weird feels overall, dropping blood pressure and baggy clothes had me feeling strange and uncertain. Then....I found my stride. I found that life was normal. I was eating hearty cuts of succulent Protein........and then I was given the go ahead to have coffee.....blessed coffee. Things began getting back to normal....a new normal that was much better than any I'd known in decades. It continues to get better each week, too.
Now....if I want, I can have the diet Dews and diet Cokes that I used to love.....and yes...I can even have them with some mixed nuts & cheese (one of my all time favorite snacks) so long as I stay within my daily calorie goals. I've yet to have the diet sodas simply because I have been without them for the better part of a year and don't miss them. I'm good with Water and coffee and an occasional diet Snapple or similar.
I ask that you trust in your pre-op homework and demonstrated diligence. You put in tremendous thought into this back then. You've been through a major series of changes since and are truly at the infant stages of your post-op living. You are only 9 weeks out.
I'll wager that in a few months you'll resist this thread with an update and I hope that it's one where you've found that things have normalized and everything is falling into place.
Hang in there and thanks for being open, supportive and honest. That's the only way to roll.

    You are all so smart!
I actually did find the joke funny - but then started feeling uneasy about it. I'm pretty sure that after you all have brought me back to reality, that I was feeling overly sensitive. I had just faced my doctor with the idea of Gastric surgery, thereby admitting fully to myself that I'm pretty overweight and have no control over my weight gain. I was shaking when I told her so I think my feelings were a bit raw.
    thanks to all of you!

I made a pureed buffalo chicken (almost like a dip) & ate that a lot during that phase. High in Protein low in fat & carbs. I used either chicken breast or canned premium chicken breast (like tuna), buffalo sauce, blue cheese, & hidden valley light ranch. Puree all of the above together. Yum! Good luck to you

You should keep in mind that muscle weighs more than fat. If you are weight training - it's possible to go up a few lbs. Are you taking measurements? And whoever said 2 lbs above goal is concerning was wrong - you could gain 2 lbs from not pooping one day.
Being this obsessed with the scale is not healthy.

One regret for most sleevers is that we didn't do it sooner. You did it sooner. Having PCOS makes it very hard to lose weight. Especially for those who don't have a eating disorder, where simply changing our diet and exercising would be beneficial. I fought PCOS to lose weight for 20+ years. I am not or ever been an over eater or binge eater and I wasn't able to successfully lose until I had the surgery. It was all metabolic and hormonal for me. Everyone is not a cookie cutter example of what a good candidate for surgery would be.

Succinctity reacted to MissKay in What can happen if I cheated on post op diet?
Hahaha I got the idea from this awesome vsg youtuber named Clusie who has a channel and she did a vlog of her trying it out. You basically just take shredded cheese and put it in a non-stick skillet in the shape of a circle and wait for it to melt and harden just enough to flip it. Then wait again. To get the shape of a shell, I put two metal kabob sticks on top of glasses, and then folded it over the sticks and let it sit for about 5 minutes. It was literally just a shell out of cheese and tasted amazing.
