  1. I need mine out but I'm trying to wait until next year due to work. I don't have any stones but I was having pain so the doc gave me a HIDA scan and the results came back abnormal with an Ejection Fraction of 86% (normal per my surgeon is in the 30-60% range). Since I don't have stones my surgeon is comfortable letting me manage the pain and we will be removing the gallbladder after the 1st of the year.
  2. My doctor said that I am allowed to take Ibuprofen in moderation. He told me to make sure I had a full stomach when I took it and I could take 200mg, 3 times a day for no more than 3 days. I'm having Gallbladder issues but I'm holding off my surgery for as long as possible for work related issues so when I get a bad flare up I do take it because Tylenol doesn't touch it.
  3. Constipation and irregular bowel issues have been one of the hardest parts for me. I have to make sure I'm getting enough fiber or I end up going a very long time between BMs and I'm not a fan of taking any sort of medication to induce one.
  4. 9.5 months post op or 293 days as of today. My advice: Walk, walk, walk after surgery. The worst part was the gas after surgery and even though it hurt to move a lot walking helped. Take it slow, listen to your body and follow your surgeon and nuts plans to the T. There will be time later to experiment. Track everything you put in your mouth. Keep yourself honest. Get fiber! I've found that I'm much more likely to get constipated now if I'm not careful. Take your vitamins Follow up on medications prescribed for other things that aren't necessarily co-morbidities, the dosage might need to be changed. For example I'm hypothyroid and on Synthroid. My NUT and Surgeon never checked my levels and when I saw my primary for weird symptoms she tested my thyroid and had to back off my dosage by about half. Find a "diet" plan that works for you. For some people it's low carb, others eat low fat, some don't follow any specific diet at all, but you need to find one that works for you.
  5. Protein shakes did not sit well with me so I drank a protein water. There are quite a few different ones on the market now. I drank the Atkins ones but I know GNC makes some good ones as well. As for the fear it's normal but you have to fight through it. I was scared to start eating again as well. Would it hurt, would I cause a leak, would I throw up (I never threw up during my early post op so that was a fear for me), what if I can't eat normally again. I'm now 9.5 months post op and love my new normal eating habits. I can eat pretty much anything but in smaller amounts but it took trial and error to get there. Start trying all kinds of soft foods. Mashed Potatoes, Refried Beans, Ricotta, Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, Cream Soups, Broths and once you find something that works branch out to food of similar make up and consistency.
  6. Yeah I would say she's maybe 4 years post op now and I saw her last weekend and she was bigger than I ever remember her being. She takes every opportunity to blame it all on the surgery, the surgeon, etc but we all know that if you don't change your habits, you won't be successful. It's sad because she lost so well and looked so healthy at first.
  7. I'm going to be having mine out but I'm trying to hold off until February. I don't have any stones, mine just isn't working properly so my surgeon says we can push it out as long as I see him every 3 months until then. What my surgeon told me is the recovery should be easier, he said I should only need 1 week off of work and that the scars will be minimal. I had a lap appy back in 2008 and you can't even see the scars from that anymore and I had 3. He did say that it might effect what I can eat but the foods it would effect I shouldn't be eating anyway.
  8. I love the Atkins shakes. I drink one a day to supplement a little extra protein and they are one of the few brands that don't have that awful protein taste.
  9. I'm at about 1200 calories a day currently. I typically get 70-90 grams of protein and 90-100 grams of carbs per my NUT. I lost about 1-2 pounds a week typically and have lost 86 pounds since surgery.
  10. I know that she had some of them pulled so she could get dentures once they started breaking and falling out but I agree. I think her oral hygiene wasn't the best and they were probably on the downslide already. She will tell anyone and everyone that it's the fault of the bypass though.
  11. I was allowed popcorn starting at 12 weeks. I've had it several times since then with no issues. I'm not a huge popcorn person but when I do make it I make it on the stove with some coconut oil.
  12. I am only 9 months post op so I'm no help on the long-term sleeve question but I do have a story. I have an associate from a local Mom group who had RNY a few years back and within a year had lost all her teeth. She's around the same age as me, mid 30s and it terrified me as I was already throwing around the idea of surgery. I asked my doctor and NUT this question when I went in for a consult and both said that likely there were multiple factors at play here. She could genetically have bad teeth, she might have poor oral hygiene and she was very likely not taking her vitamins or supplements. I saw her last week, she had gained back all her weight plus some so I'm guessing she wasn't compliant with treatment post surgery which makes me feel better about my own oral health because I'm very rigid about it. My parents spent 6500 dollars on my braces, back in the early 90s, so I don't want to mess my teeth up. I've been to the dentist twice since my surgery and my teeth look great thus far. Just take those vitamins and get calcium whenever you can. Plus if you have an acid issue speak to the doc about meds.
  13. Once you eat a denser protein you will feel it. Chicken triggers my restriction hard personally and so does steak. Eggs never triggered restriction for me and now I can't eat them at all as they don't sit well.
  14. I on average lose about 4-7 pounds a month and have been since I've gone back on regular foods at 12 weeks post op. I'm now 9.5 months out and have lost 86 pounds total since surgery. Slow and steady is a great way to go according to my NUT, losing is losing. Also just because the scale isn't moving much, check your measurements. I lost a lot measurement wise early on. I went from a size 20 at surgery to a size 14 by 4-5 months out and have now been sitting at a 12-14 for 4 months.
  15. I was driving myself crazy on the scale so I understand wanting to weigh everyday but it really is a better view to do so once a week or even once a month if you have the strength to do so. For example my weight day is Monday and yesterday I was 185, I just stepped on the scale and I'm 189. My doc said you can fluctuate up and down as much as 5 pounds day to day
  16. I would not have had the surgery personally if I couldn't have the sleeve. The whole idea of malabsorption made me very uncomfortable. I have found that I just don't have a taste for sweet things anymore now post surgery. It is likely more a mental thing but it works for me.
  17. For snacks: String Cheese or Cheese Slices Beef Jerkey Peanut butter and a few crackers Nuts Occasionally a Luna Bar For Meals: Chicken Salad or Tuna (I eat them right out of the package or on the Pepperage Farm Very Thin Bread) Lunch Meat P3 Protein Packs Atkins Meals (I can usually eat half when I want something warm)
  18. Are you weighing yourself everyday? If so, stop, at least for now because you will make yourself crazy. I weigh myself once a week so I don't see as much fluctuation day to day. Also I found that eating several small meals per day helped me meet my goals much better nutrition wise. Honestly, I did not start losing weight well until I upped my calories and protein intake personally. I still can't eat very large meals but I can eat several small meals to help me meet my goals.
  19. I was right around 900 calories at 3-4 months post op. I'm now about 1100-1300 at 9.5 months out.
  20. I don't track fats at all either but I try to avoid a lot of bad fats. I'm 9 months post op, down 86 pounds from surgery (116 total) and 10 pounds from my initial goal. Also I rarely lose more than 10 pounds a month so I think 7 in 3 weeks is good. I've found that my weightloss has no rhythm to it. This past month I was stalled a week, lost 1 pound the next week, 1 pound the following week and 4 the next. I weigh myself once a week
  21. I've noticed I can eat more in the past month than I could before. Still not a whole sandwich, where I could eat 2 whole ones before, but pretty close if that's all I'm eating. I think it's just a natural part of the process as you move out from surgery.
  22. I was on clear liquids in the hospital so days 1-3 (discharged on day 3) and then Full liquids until my follow up so about a week and a half. I would eat broth, cream soups strained and protein shakes. I liked the Atkins Protein Drinks and GNC Lean Protein Shakes.
  23. Unsweetened Iced Tea is now my go to drink when I want something other than water. I used to hate unsweetened tea! Now sweet beverages like lemonade and sweet tea are so gross to me.
  24. I get mild nausea from the Anesthesia. I never used to but the last 2 surgeries I have had I had minor Nausea. I was nauseous for about 12 hours with this surgery, they gave me Zofran to combat it. I've had no issues with nausea since then. I'm 9 months post op and the only time I threw up was during a stomach bug at 7 months post op.
  25. Are you taking pain meds still? It could be the narcotics.
