Surgery update: Okay, new update. It has been a very hard few days. I was tricked at first. Within a couple of hours of surgery, I was feeling great. However, that quickly changed. Through the entire first night I feel like satan had unleashed a gang of demons inside my body. I was allergic to the pain meds that they were pushing and it was very difficult dealing with that. I was up throwing up blood for hours. The pain from that was terrible and I was very scared. I still have tons of the blood in my sinuses. The surgery day and night and the first part of the next day I was so mad at myself for doing this. However, it is getting better everyday. I am at home now so that is a good thing. I have not had more than 2 hours of sleep at a time since surgery. More positive notes: I am feeling better, I am able to hold down Water, small sips of a Protein Drink and about a 1/4 cup of strained cream Soup (not at the same time). I believe I am on the mend now.

I would be lying if I said that I didn't have some of these same feelings so far. I am one week out of RNY and just don't feel good, I feel so thirsty and can't hydrate enough. I just read these boards everyday and cling to the hope that you all give me that it will get better!

First time poster, but I found this message board to be very helpful before my surgery and after. It's great to connect with other people going through the same thing. I was sleeved on August 18 and am now 5 days post op.
The day of the surgery post-op was awful, due to the gas buildup. I felt like I was going to die and couldn't breathe. Each day has gotten easier and today has been the best day yet. I've been able to walk about 1.5 miles a day and am getting 100 grams of Protein in a day through Protein shakes and Soups. I hope to increase that to 130-150 grams of Protein soon.
After the 2 week fast and 3 days after surgery, I got to have Tomato Soup. I can't articulate how amazing it was. Plus, I love how full you get not eating hardly anything.
Reading these threads, it appears I'm very lucky. I have encountered issues eating anything with spices in it. It did upset my stomach. I just crossed those items off the list for now.
All in all, I am so glad I made the decision to get this done. I feel better and am so excited about all the fun things I'll be able to do now that I couldn't do before.
As an FYI, my starting weight was 415 pounds. I'm 6"3. I lost 27 pounds on the two week liquid fast. I weighed in on the day of surgery at 388 pounds and am 378 pounds as of today. It's just awesome to have already lost 37 pounds in less than 3 weeks!
It hasn't been easy, but if you follow the rules and stay strong mentally, you can do it! I keep myself motivated and excited for the future by watching before and after videos on YouTube. It is so inspiring!
I feel bad for those that are struggling just after surgery. Keep the faith and you'll make it through!

You can do it! I think most of us are food addicts and may not necessarily realize it. During the past 6 days of post-op (sleeved on 8/18), I have learned that I am a food addict. I started my food fast on 8/4 at 415 pounds. have lost 41 pounds (currently 374pounds) in less than 3 weeks. It hasn't been easy, but the benefits I'm already getting in both health and appearance are slowly taking the place of the comfort that food gave me. Today is the first day I really thought about cheating. The urge was very strong, but I fought it...and won! It was a big deal for me and I'm so happy that I didn't give in. Food has a power over most of, if not all of us. Personally, that makes me mad and now I have a tool to fight back! Stay strong and keep the faith. For those regretting it, give yourself a chance to become free and live the life you deserve! The happiness you get from a cheeseburger will pale in comparison to looking and feeling better about yourself. I know it's tough, but you can do it!!
I've attached a picture of my face from last month and a pic that I took today. It helps me so much to see these results. I still have a long way to go, but I have faith in myself that I can and WILL do it! You guys that are struggling can too! Stay strong and don't let food have control over you. Remember, you're the boss of your own body! Don't let food bully you!

I have been thinking about this and some of my thoughts may help you as they have helped me. I began to realize that I have punished myself for years with my weight. The message was that I didn't deserve to loose weight or have a flattering image. It takes some time to learn to love yourself. My daughter had the weight loss surgery done a year ago, and I watched her as she lost and began to get her old self back. I thought I could do it myself, so I started dieting with the help of a nutritionist. She suggested a small plate, sitting down and eating without other disturbances so I could concentrate on eating alone, and eating a plate with 1/4 Protein, 1/4 fruit, and 1/2 vegies. I lost 30 pounds, down from an all time high of 215. Time passed, and I concentrated less and less on loving myself enough to be healthy for me, and I began to gain the weight back. I went back up to 200. The depression was self hate and the message was one of failure. I wallowed in this for a bit, and then I decided that Portion Control was the important thing here. I had gastric sleeve done 8/15/16, and now am working through those first few weeks of new stomach syndrome.
The thing I am learning is that I can never again go back to the depression. Depression is like a light on your dash board that is bright red. It is a message that you are failing yourself. It is a call to action. My daughter says that she sees this as a reset. You have to reset your way of thinking about yourself. Concentrate on loving yourself. This does not mean to feed yourself with forbidden foods. Think about the way that you feed a child. If it would not be good for a baby, it certainly does not need to go into my mouth. See restricting as a form of self love. People gain weight on some antidepressants, but some like Welbutrin actually have the side effect of weight loss. See your doctor. The person that prescribed something that makes you gain weight is not your friend.
You can do it. Sit back and think about what you have already done. What an amazing thing you have done already. I think all you really need to do is to develop a plan to reset your weight loss. Go back to basics. See that Dr. that has done you wrong and straighten them out. You need people surrounding you with help and love. You might need a make-over. You do deserve to loose the weight. Remember that the depression is nothing more than a message. Get the message, and do something about changing your direction. Once you change the direction, you will move toward happiness and go back to your just after surgery diet. You know that works for you. Keep your eye on the prize!

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.
Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.
During the first few weeks after surgery, your body is in a major heal mode. Many patients find it difficult to meet their protein and Fluid requirements during this time. So if you have a problem with these, just keep trying and you should be able to get there.

dustyd reacted to James Marusek in Fluid intake
According to my post-op directions from my surgical team, the daily Fluid requirement was 64-80 ounces per day. So since you can only drink 20-30 ounces per day, this does appear to be a problem. Four things come to mind.
Recovery from Surgery: During the first few weeks after surgery, may individuals report difficulty consuming the required amount of fluids. This is because their new stomach is in a major heal mode. Generally if they continue trying each day, they can increase their daily totals and reach the required goal. You are 4 weeks out and should be closing in on your daily goals. So this points to a problem.
Definition of Fluids: Fluids are more than just Water, for example milk. It is the Water content of the Protein shake that you consume. It is the water in Soups. It is the water you drink when you take your daily Vitamins. It is drinks such as tea, Decaf coffee, Crystal Light etc.
Inability to attain Fluid Goals: May be due to a stricture.
Taste of Fluids: After surgery, taste buds can change. After my RNY surgery 3 years ago, I could even stand the taste of water in the hospital. It tasted overly chlorinated and I just couldn't force myself to drink it. I found that the answer was experimentation. In the hospital, they gave me sugar free popsicles and they became my best friend. For example, I found that I could tolerate flavored water, so Crystal Light became my friend. For some individuals, the fluids are temperature sensitive. They like drinks hot or they like drinks cold. For me I found that I loved Hot Drinks when it was cold and there was snow on the ground. I drank hot chocolate but I used the "No Sugar Added" variety. I also liked fine English teas. I liked cold drinks on a warm summer day, such as Crystal Light and now my new favorite is Bai.

Don't worry if you don't reach these goals for the first couple of weeks....mainly stay hydrated and get in the Protein you can. It gets easier with each passing week! It sounds like you are doing fine! Good luck!

Have to be in the hospital for my surgery in 3.5 hours. I can't sleep! I can't believe the day is here. It took so long getting here. I am nervous, but excited about being healthy again. I am excited about being proud of myself again and not ashamed of my weight. I am anxious to not feel like people are judging me based on my weight. I was always thin as a child, but started gaining weight at 18 and now I am 40. I have never been thin as an adult and I am ready to know this feeling. I stuck to the preop diet really well and didn't struggle much. It was hard, but I want to follow my doctors instructions throughout this process the best I can. I am ready!!!!
