dvons reacted to kimini in Help! Need advice for sleeved family member
Hello all. My dad was sleeved in July (a month and 1/2 before me) and he is not sticking to the plan. I know that my journey is about me and that I shouldn't focus on how others are doing, but this is my dad, and we have always been close. I hear from my mom and my brother (who is living with my parents after his divorce) that my dad is completely off the rails. According to them, he Snacks all day on chips, Cookies and other garbage, and he is not tracking his Protein or following his plan at all. I am so worried that he is squandering his one chance to lose weight and be healthy.

I had a conversation with my mom earlier this week, and we both agreed that I was the only one who might be able to talk some sense into him. My mom hasn't been through surgery and she has a very rigid, by the book outlook, which is at odds with my dad's carefree attitude. My brother has been through WLS, but there are two reasons why he can't sway my father 1) He and my dad butt heads on everything. My brother talks down to my dad, and my dad has zero respect for my brother, especially since he has moved back in with them and can't support his own kids; and 2) My brother had duodenal switch, he is more than 5 years out, and he eats whatever he wants all day and literally cannot gain weight. My dad sees this and thinks he can do the same right after having the sleeve.

...Which leaves me. My dad and I have always "spoken the same language". When I was younger, we would challenge each other to lose weight and get fit. We used to go hiking together every morning, and we both agreed that carbs are poison, but then we would fall off our own bandwagon when we felt discouraged, so we've shared a lot of highs and lows. I feel like some of that old pep talk/challenge is what he needs, but I'm not sure exactly what to say or how it will be received.

I am supposed to go see him this weekend, and I would like to be armed with some great advice, but I'm afraid I'll come up short and won't be convincing enough. I would love to throw some shocking stats at him or provide some kind of motivation for him to try harder. Any advice on how I may be able to convince him to follow his plan?

Exactly. We are all doing the same thing and have the same goal. Why not use each others experience as tools to get through the tough days or questions we may have. Listen, I know tacos aren't a good idea, you know tacos aren't a good idea. But she had a question and shouldn't be afraid to ask. Instead of saying it how I said it, you could have approached it a little more delicately. That's all I'm saying. There is no such thing as a stupid question. I have found so much useful info and so may helpful people on this site. Then there are those "others" who forget what it's like to be brand new and have those forehead slapping questions.

You all know that I stand with shelterdog on this one. There is a difference between sarcasm and bullying. It's clear some here believe this forum is their own and new voices better get in line or not apply.

Don't you think you both are being a bit snobby and judgmental? I certainly do. food has been a problem for MOST of us on here--your no exception, I'm sure! This is a forum for people who need support, not sarcasm and ridicule. Everyone handles this change differently and adjusts differently. She asked a question. I'm sure she wasn't looking for sarcasm or a scolding nor did she deserve one. I feel like I'm in "Mean Girls" the VSG chronicles.

Hey, I've read a bunch of posts on this forum over the past several weeks and decided, now that I'm only days away from my surgery, that I'd go ahead and join. The liquid pre-op diet has been the most brutal diet I've ever been on, I'm starving all day long and I never thought I'd miss chewing so much...but I haven't cracked. I've been doing everything by the numbers, so I can get the best outcome possible. My surgery date is September 23rd, and this diet has had the nice effect of making me welcome the surgery date, so that I hopefully won't have to feel this gnawing feeling in my stomach anymore, at least for a few months!
I'm glad to find a men's forum, there just aren't a whole lot of stories out there on the web about men having the surgery and achieving fitness goals, and the like. I am planning to really get myself to a high level of fitness through this process - I love weights and even though I've been overweight most of my life, I know a lot about nutrition and weight training. I guess the challenge isn't gaining the knowledge, it's actually using it. My weight is such a difficulty now though that I'm basically carrying another full-grown man around all day long, it makes the compound lifts difficult to execute safely, without risking injury. So I can't do them. I can't wait until I can feel the relief of getting that guy off my back and pushing Iron, instead of flesh.
Thanks to the guys on this forum who have posted photos of their progress. I plan to be around.

Post op 15 days today. Had my lap band since 2009 before my revision on Sept. 2, 2016. I'm 15 lbs down since I had my surgery. I average 597 cals, 60 carbs per day since the surgery. I talk a daily walk for 20 minutes.
Super fast weight loss is almost always Water weight. People just don't lose 5 lbs of fat per day. The way I look at it, if I intake 600-800 cal a day, I'm going to lose weight at a good rate unless I'm retaining Water for some reason. If I'm not losing, then I have to figure out why I'm retaining water. That's the way I look at it.
Btw, the sleeve makes it easier to cut back on calories/carbs, way easier... I'm really happy with the switch.
    Really happy.

@@cassandramarie93 - ecigs finally got me over the top on this one over four years ago. Geez, I was trying to kill all the damn spiders under my bed for weeks when I tried to do it cold turkey...well not completely true (I think there were snakes there too ) , my biggest problem was I just couldn't think clearly. Patches, nicorette...nothing worked. But the ecigs did. Dang if I know why, but I found a flavor I like that doesn't offend anyone.
Now this is the hard part...does your significant other smoke? (if you have one). Because I will tell you, if a few months of not smoking you will about puke when you kiss someone who smokes. You will smell them coming a mile away. So just warning you about that.

If one vapes, at two weeks before the nicotine test, switched to zero nicotine vaping. Both pg and vg are not toxic, and is in all our food and beauty products. If you smoke, you must quit since cigarettes have 3000+ toxic chemicals which may affect your surgery.

@@Nana1222 I was tested at my initial blood work and will be again during pre-op testing. Some insurances require you to be nicotine free for 6 months - some surgeons require 3 or more.

At what stage is nicotine tested? I am a smoker and plan to quit like yesterday. I know how bad it is and the problems it can cause with surgery so I am working on quitting now. I will meet with my surgeon next month for the first time and probably won't have the sleeve until Dec or Jan. When is it tested?

I was tested at the very end, at the pre-op blood, urine work and chest x-ray stage. For me, the pre-op appointment had to be within 3 weeks of the surgery date.

Every day smoker, 1 pack a day, and it took about 11 days not smoking to clear the urine test. The doctors understand how hard it is, and are patient on you to pass it.

For a grab and go, you might really like the Mini Baby Bel Light cheese, it's the little round one wrapped up in wax. They keep outside the fridge for about 2 hours bc of the wax. Anyway, super dense, yummy, and a good base in your stomach.
They are quite cheap at costco and Sam's, but expensive in the supermarket.

Nor was I trying to be rude.
Many plans vary in food type it would seem. fruit wasn't on mine for a long while. Bananas are certainly a food that I'll enjoy on occasion in the future once my weight loss is done and I'm on cruise control. I can see adding it to a Fiber rich Breakfast Cereal.
To specifically answer your question....I really don't know.
I ate the portion size that I was instructed to eat at the various checkups with my surgeon.
If I eat too fast I'll get the full feeling and I don't like it.
I can say this......in the early days there wasn't much restriction noted by me with the Protein shakes or yogurt. Once I advanced to chicken, steak and the like it was absolutely noticeable and has been to this very day. I pray it is there forever.
