Last week was absolutely awful, but this week is so amazing. I had no idea how I was going to stop the cravings and control myself, but I went through the sugar withdrawals and I'm on the other side. I feel like I have more energy, I'm happier, I'm more alert and less foggy headed. I feel great. Tell me, do I feel like this after bypass too?

Have faith hon that your pain will be next to nothing. And if it's more than you can bear, please ask for more meds. The hospital staff is there to keep you in comfort.

I'm five days post-op and have had no pain. To be fair, they were putting pain mess into my IV, but since leaving the hospital all I feel is a little tenderness at the wound sites, but only after bending too much. :-) However, gas pain and nausea is a real issue for some people. I didn't suffer from any of these problems, but other people on my floor did. So everyone is different and it's hard to predict.

I just wanted to share my experience. I was a neurotic daily weigher for about 15 months post surgery. And this far out it's no more honeymoon. For the past two weeks I have not stepped on the scale.
I feel much calmer and peaceful. I'm not obsessing about my numbers on scale hence I'm not getting upset as much and having negative thoughts about my WLS journey.
These days I have amped my workouts and I can feel my muscles toning. And it motivates me to keep working out harder and eat right.

Was sleeved 5 days ago. Pain is tolerable. Haven't taken pain pills in 2 days. A little gas. Down 10 lbs in 5 days. That's exciting. I can't drink any more broth or Jello, so turned from it. Mainly the only thing I miss right now is sleeping on my belly!!!! Lol. I get to start full liquids on Monday. I CANT WAIT.

Had my surgery on Monday. Feeling great. I'm not hungry so getting my Protein and Water in is my main focus.

So awesome you feel good. My fears were gone after surgery. Probably because there is no turning back. Lol.

Keep us posted on your progress.

I had my surgery yesterday. Some gas pain in my left shoulder for an hour or two post-op, but nothing more since then. Had some lower abdominal pain from the drain, but they just took it out and I'm already feeling much better. That said, now that I'm drinking liquids, I feel really fatigued. I've been walking a lot though, more than everyone else on my floor combined! To be fair, most of the others seem to suffering a lot, either from pain or nausea. I really haven't had a problem with either.

Congrats - I'll be having surgery two days after you. I've taken a couple of full body photos but they are not the greatest. I'll try again sometime before next week. Good luck with your surgery!

Yes, I'm now into my second week. I'm allowed two small meals (lean protein/veggies) and 3 Protein Shakes a day, but for this week I'm dropping one of the meals to see how that goes. I started yesterday and it was fine - I did not have hunger issues throughout the day (or cravings, which a lot of people seem to have). In fact, I probably could have gone without the meal.

Here in Japan they tout the benefits of bariatric surgery as reduced living expenses (mostly food) at $350-600 a month and reduced taxi costs, because apparently obese people take taxis everywhere they go.
Interestingly, only about 150 procedures are done annually here, and there appears to be only 10 places where you can get it done (personally I only found 2).
Even if my insurance covered the procedure, I'd still be about $6000 out of pocket here, and that, combined with the lack of proper patient care in hospitals, the language barrier, and the fact that my place of employment would be informed of my exact medical procedures, is why I've decided to do it in Mexico instead. So, in addition to Protein powders and Vitamins that I have to ship here internationally, it means it will probably take a longer for the surgery to "pay off", but that's not really a concern for me at all. I'm doing this for my health, any other benefits are just icing on the cake. (or should I say Protein in the shake?)

Sgc, you bring up a really good point. I think it's MUCH more acceptable for women to be openly vulnerable about their weight, their bodies, etc. My brother is obese and I know it bothers him, but I don't think I've ever heard him be really vulnerable about how it makes him feel. (He's also a carpenter and a rough-tough guys-guys who never cries.) When you made this point, I sat there and thought about how many times I've talked about this issue with friends, family and therapists and it's staggering. And it's because it's socially acceptable for me to do so.
James, I'll never forget the conversation that my regular doctor and I had after my surgery (she and I were close). She asked me if people treated me differently now that I had lost weight. I had always thought people treated me fine when I was morbidly obese, but I was definitely treated better and kinder after I lost weight. Doors were opened for me, people looked me in the eye and said hello, small things that I hadn't noticed as an obese woman, but those subtle differences in humanity really shine through once you lose weight.
That INFURIATES me. I think situations like that happen all the time. I can recall several times where bosses or superiors had told me that I'd be very attractive if I lost weight (back then the laws weren't quiet the same). Such bs.
Thanks so much for these comments. I'll still be checking in today, so I'd love any more feedback before the show. And PLEASE tune in if you'd like to hear the conversation! NOON PST at www.backstagepassradio.com

As a child I was short and skinny. I used to get bullied and beaten up on a regular basis. As I approached adulthood, I gained a little weight. This meant that I could defend myself better because I had a little weight to push around. In later life as an obese adult, I felt I was being discriminated against in the work environment because of my weight. Nothing that was said to my face and nothing that could be proved in a court of law. Only this is one of the sad realities of life. After losing the weight due to RNY gastric bypass surgery, I can observe the difference that society treats me. I went from invisible to visible. It seems like I have gained more respect. These are subjective observations and may not have a basis in reality. They lie in the smallest of things.

If you are getting in only 500 calories (or even 600 or 700,) and an appropriate amount of Protein, do carbs matter at all other than hitting some arbitrary number? I never worried about carbs and just concentrated on getting the best overall nutrition within the protein and calorie restrictions.
One of the reasons that WLS has been the most successful weight loss therapy for the past few decades is that it gets your calories down to a functionally low level irrespective what diets are in fashion at the time - low fat, low carb or whatever else the diet industry comes up with.

I don't know if I'm anxious about how I'll feel about being thin(ner) but I am worried about the social aspects of it, such as people being nicer to me, guys flirting (instead of running away), etc. I've mostly been overweight most of my life; obesity is relatively new for me (about 8 years I guess). That said, when I was on the high end of the BMI overweight scale, nothing ever happened. But when I dipped to the low end of overweight or even into normal weight, I got noticed a lot more. Not just by guys, by everyone. It always kind of annoyed me, since I was still the same person, only with or without a little more padding, but it's amazing how differently people treat you. I've read articles from people who have lost a lot of weight and this is something that bothers them as well (to the point of depression) - as it was something they were not expecting.

I'm tracking (which I think is different from journalling) my food, exercise, and weight loss on various apps. However, there are a lot of things I would like to write about my journey, so I'm thinking of keeping a blog (privately, for now). My surgery is next week, so I'd like to get that started soon.
I also have been taking photos of random things connected to my weight loss - in the end I'd like to make a small scrapbook of those photos, plus random things like favourite recipes, etc.

Still have not tried to eat/drink yet.. Waiting for doctor to give the okay.. I am afraid of what to expect when I go home.... No nurses just a click away... I know one thing.. Once I lose this weight.. I will do everything in my power not to gain it back.

I jumped for joy first to thank My Lord and then I did the happy dance and of course the kids danced with me. After a sec or two one asked .. who's birthday is it and the reply was " it must be her birthday I think adults have them everyday! Well it's not my birthday it's my new day! So excited that it's my turn to Celebrate to my new beginning! Now waiting to find out surgery date.

My surgery is next Tuesday, February 7th. This is my 7 day of liquid diet. 3 premium Protein shakes a day and 64oz of Water. I drink a cup of low sodium broth in the evening. I'm also allowed sugar free Jello before surgery. I've lost 12 lbs since Saturday. I met with my doctor's yesterday and the pre-op papers were a little scary. But doctor's reassuring in the low risk outcomes they have had and it made me feel better. I was measured, pictures taken and given hugs by the office staff. Everybody is so supportive. Getting through each day fine. Only 4 more days until surgery! Excited and anxious but I'm seeing this through. No turning back. I've waited for over 6 months for this day. Our doctor's office has support groups, classes and offers you a mentor. Mine text me immediately after my pre-op class and told me she was there for me and what to expect after surgery. Very nice to have someone who has been walking the same journey. She's lost 120 pounds! Less than a year. She will come meet me for the first time surgery morning. Good luck to all you February sleepovers! I will let you know how it goes!
