    November RNY Surgery Buddies 2016

@@ereese310 See if you can get a peer to peer first. I too was denied initially. I was all prepared for an appeal process, which I was going to use Lindstrom Obesity advocates for. When I called blue cross and spoke to someone in Medical Management, she told me to have my surgeon do a peer to peer prior to an appeal. He did and they approved it the same day.

    Completely Undecided.

@@gina171 Hi, may I ask which doctor is performing your surgery? I too go to Duke metabolic clinic, and am seeing Dr Yu. Im actually waiting on my insurance approval, they just submitted last week. My BMI is also 49.59. My surgery is revision though, I had my Lap Band (placed 2007) removed 3 weeks ago, and am revising to RNY. When Dr Yu took my band out 3 weeks ago he discovered it had punctured a hole in my diaphram, so we are thinking insurance approval is likley. Maybe we could be buddies

    Gastric Band or Plication?

I just had my band removed last Friday 7/29/16. I had my band placed 3/2007, so I lived with it for almost 10 years. When my surgeon opened my up he discovered that my band had put a HOLE in my diaphragm. He said he had never seen that before. At 2 years out, is when I first started having complications with my band. I followed all the rules to a "T", and did experience some initial success with it. But once the complications started it was never ending. I have also put back on every one of the 70 pounds I originally lost. The Dr that placed my band doesnt even do them anymore. EVERYONE I know personally that was banded, had to have surgery again. What ever you decide to do, just keep in mind that the longer a procedure has been around, the more informed a decision you can make. When I had my band placed in 2007, it was considered to be "much safer" than the bypass, but was still the new guy on the block. Go figure.... I am having a revision to bypass in November of this year.

Thnak you so much for posting this. Your photos are beautiful!!!! I really needed to see this today!!
  16. I took your survey, hope it helps. My answers may seem strange because I had lap band 10 years ago, and am having it revised to gastric bypass this November.

    New life here I come...

Wow this is so exciting for you!!! I wish you well. Having my band removed 7/29, and revision to Bypass in November.
  19. Hello all, I had my lap band placed back in march of 2007 when it was all the rage and no proven long term research. I went to surgery at 283, and managed to drop to an all time low of 220 within 10 months. I spent the next 9 years battling with this lapband and all the CRAP that came with it. I remember feeling like I had hit rock bottom when I couldnt even swallow my own saliva, but was slowly seeing the scale creep up. Today I am right back to 274, which is NOT my highest post surgery weight. (I would have never guessed that 9 years ago) Any how about a year ago, June 2015, I decided something had to give and started seeing a new Dr. about my options. I honestly hadnt see one in years. I had just learned to live with the GERD, upset stomach, inability to eat healthy foods, sleeping sitting up, etc.. I have seen this Dr and his team monthly since June of last year. I have been doing all of the things required by my insurance to meet the criteria for a revision. When I went to see my surgeon 3 weeks ago, he said we need to go ahead and get the band out asap, since it has been causing me problems. I said GREAT to that and we scheduled my removal date for 7/29/16. woo hoo!! So then I ask him what about the bypass surgery. He says that will be treated as a completely separate case, and that I was technically on visit #5 of my bcbs required 6 month diet. (the office didn't start to count the visits as diet visits till Jan 2016) not sure why, but okay. His attitude seems to be "Lets get the band out first, and fight with the insurance company later about the revision to rny" Has anyone else had this type of experience? Im wondering if hes hoping to find something during the surgery, that would lean in favor of the insurance company approving me for a revision. It just seems a little round about... Thanks everyone for your input

  23. Thank you everyone for your input. I really dont mind doing more than one surgery, if that is the safest. My biggest concern is trying to get the approval from the insurance company.

lap band removal first to get insurance approval to RNY ?

@@vita428, thanks so much for your input. My insurance will cover a revision if deemed medically neccasary. We shall see what happens Iguess.
