I hate to break it to you, but there really is no LAST meal. I have not restricted myself from anything, because the more your voice says no, the mind says yes. I eat steak all the time, just has to be med rare, I have eaten Taco Bell, off, and Dairy Queen. It is not about removing food you like, but being cautious and reasonable about how often and how much you eat. By about your 6-8 month you will find yourself testing foods. Just know that the nice 8oz steak you used to be able to eat may now only be 2 oz, and that ice cream you loved, will still taste great, but may make you RUN to the bathroom. The only food I really cannot eat is bread and I think that's because it clumps together and is too heavy for my stomach.

And it's OK to have food funerals! Just don't do it for two straight weeks every meal
We all have our need for a fix- mine came during a road trip I took two weeks prior to surgery. From Chicago to Dallas by way of St. Louis. Had a Dairy Queen dipped cone every day! Large!!! And from there it was a huge juicy Texas steak, pulled pork BBQ and a big burrito. The rest of the time I ate healthfully, drank Protein shakes and really took it easy at the stadiums by eating before we went.
Enjoy it- but know you may not even WANT some of those things post op. I'm still dying for a steak, but too afraid to try it yet. I'm barely dipping my toes 10 weeks post op in ground beef.

I'll probably have a big Pasta meal - chicken pasta carbonara or fettuccine Alfredo. I have been doing well pre-surgery but I'm sure I'll break once or twice before.
With crusty Italian bread with butter! Lol

food funerals are a normal, natural step down the WLS road. I went on quite the bender before my 2-week preop diet... all my favorite fast food places, bbq but the big one was a dozen Cajun wings and cheese fries from wing stop.
Don't think of it like "the last time in my life I have..." because it very likely will not be the last time. It might be a year or more before you have some of those things, but WLS is a tool to help you achieve lifelong healthy habits.

It's probably discouraged by most people, but what is going to be your last meal (or meals) before you get the surgery? (I obviously don't mean RIGHT before, lol, I know there is a diet to go on to shrink the liver. I'm talking about way before surgery)
I want to have two last meals, not necessarily two days in a row.
I want KFC because it will probably be the last time in my life that I will ever taste the colonel's original recipe! =)
And I would like a fat, juicy steak and a lobster tail from Outback.
    So what about you?

Oh boy the variety of advice were all getting makes it difficult for us to help... My nut said I'll come home on full liquids after 2 night in the hospital and on the 5th day out from surgery I can add Greek yogurt etc... The guidelines don't seem to be the same for anyone unless two people are using the same surgeon...

My surgeon really wanted us to get our Protein right away. They gave us the undiluted ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates in the hospital as soon as we were cleared for liquids (right after the leak test).

Celebrated my 125 pounds lost with some ink - my first!!!
I knew as soon as I started this journey that I would document it in some way with a tattoo. After reading some of Glennon Melton Doyle, I knew what I'd want my tattoo to say - "I can do hard things". Just because something is hard or challenging isn't an excuse to not do it. I have done hard things, I will do hard things, I CAN do hard things. Now every time I look at my feet, I'll be reminded that I am strong and capable of doing hard things.

YES!!!! Can't wait to get done with this phase. None of the shakes are appealing anymore. I can have Greek yogurt, but like the shakes, it gets old real fast. I saw a quote somewhere I recite in my head before each shake. It says, "The things you do now that feel like great sacrifices, will one day be the greatest investment in yourself you've made." Helps me get through one shake at a time.... good luck! Sent from my KFASWI using the BariatricPal App

Yeah, I think I'm gonna just have to ask my Nutritionalist about exactly what I can have right after surgery. My handy dandy little bariatric book says
You will be sent home on a bariatric clear liquid diet. Please do no forget to sip on Water throughout the day. Your goal should be 64 ounces each day.
    It says:
You will start Protein supplements on day 3 after surgery
You will progress to full liquids day 7 after surgery.

But I need to know exactly what I can have, you know? So I guess i'll ask her or him.
Thanks for your replies and advice though! I appreciate it so much!

Stay away from adding fruit like bananas until you are way further out. Bananas can make up dump.

This is a great question for your surgeon or NUT. My first week was clears, but my surgeon allowed a couple of exceptions (namely Premier Protein and a couple of ProtiDiet soups). I also used the ProtiDiet liquid beverage concentrates undiluted. They are clear.

After RNY gastric bypass surgery, the three most important daily requirements are Protein, fluids and Vitamins.
In terms of Protein, you need to find a protein shake that you can tolerate. You don't have to like it, only tolerate it. For many individuals, their taste buds change. Mine changed so much that I couldn't even drink the Water in the hospital because it tasted like chlorine. I could not drink milk because I became lactose intolerant after surgery. Fortunately that condition (lactose intolerant) only lasted for 2 months. Flavoring such as chocolate is O.K. so long as you can tolerate it. Be prepared to experiment after surgery until you find a supplement that you can work with. Whatever Protein Shake you select, it should have a good amount of protein (such as more than 20 grams per serving) and low amount of sugar. If you become lactose intolerant after surgery, be aware that some Protein shakes contain lactose. For me I used "Muscle Milk Light (Vanilla Creme) protein shake powder blended in a Ninja blender (single serving cup) with Water. I blended in a half a banana to make it more tolerable. Your protein requirement is a separate requirement than your meal requirement - so the half a banana doesn't count against your meal volume. (But don't abuse this). Also your protein requirement doesn't kick in until after you begin to pass gas after surgery (normally within the first 5 days).

@@Autumn Riley Arnold - Honestly, I think you will have to ask your dr or NUT. I have read lots of things lately about "clear liquid" diet and I know I was supposed to be on it, but I don't know that I really did what I was supposed to! The day before surgery, they said Clear liquids and I understood that to be nothing with red or blue dye and that you could see through so I used the premixed Isopure drinks on that day (UGH!! I hated those BTW. Some like them but just the smell makes me shiver... ) I was only in the hospital one night and I am sure I was supposed to do "clear liquids" but I think I drank my chocolate Protein drinks mixed with Water right away. I am not sure that was correct though. I am hoping to have plastics in the fall, and the instructions for that are also Clear Liquids for 2 days prior to surgery, so I will have to get it clarified for then too! I am just not sure how you get Protein in on a clear liquid diet.
I know that wasn't helpful other than to say, I did it and was confused about it (and still am!)

I have pretty intense dumping symptoms at 10 months out. Keep in mind, it doesnt matter if you're eating small amounts of healthy food-- merely eating too quickly can make me dump, or not chewing well enough. Sugar alcohols in sugar free items make me dump, and taking one bite too many can make me dump. It's a learning process. I prepared the same way, still got dumping syndrome, while others never claim to experience it. My Mom had RNY too, and she eats all the foods we're told not too: candy, Pasta and bread, and never dumps. Meanwhile, I'm following the rules to a "T" and dump fairly often.

"@@Alyssa Toner" A bad experience in the hospital is enough to set off a bad recovery. You should notify the Patient Advocates office of the hospital. Your hormones are all out of whack from surgery - so it will get better! 15lbs is awesome! Once the swelling goes down - you'll feel so much better. Get your Protein, fluids and Vitamins in. Stay strong!
Oh and grilled PB sandwich - never heard of it but does sound good! You'll be able to have one again someday.

@@Katrinakit there are 30 grams of Protein and 160 calories in Premier Protein, and only 1 gram of sugar. It also contains a lot of other Vitamins. I'm 9 months post op and I still drink them daily, especially when I'm having an "ew food" day.
@@Alyssa Toner my first several weeks were friggin horrible. There were people who had the same surgery at the same time as me and were on the same floor and they were walking laps and feeling great by the night after we had surgery. I barely walked in the hospital compared to everyone else (maybe like 4 laps total in two days) not for lack of trying - I was in serious pain and could barely move. I was on prescribed pain meds for like two weeks, though I only took them at night and in the morning by the end of the two weeks, and then I moved to tylenol. I didn't begin feeling like myself until about 2-3 months ago, honestly. I felt exhausted, depressed, hormones were all over the place... it really sucked. This lasted pretty much the entire first 6 months. Now, I'm 9 months post-op and I can say with complete honesty and sincerity: IT WAS ALL WORTH IT. I would do it again 10 times over to have what I have now, and feel like I feel now. I've lost about 150 pounds since my RNY 9 months ago, and I feel great. I feel like I am normal, like I can do anything I want and be anything I want, and like I actually have a happy, healthy future ahead of me. I can move so much easier, and when I'm hungry, I can eat a small amount of healthy food and then I'm satiated until it's time to eat again. Is this what it feels like to be "normal"? Because it's amazing. And soon, you'll be there too. It's hard in the beginning for everyone, and some more than others have it really tough. But this is just a phase, like the pre-op diet. After all these phases (especially if you do them right and really try hard to take care of yourself and make good habits) you're going to have the rest of your life to be happy, healthy, and free to do and be whatever you want. Hang in there! It gets easier! Here's the progress picture I made just a couple hours ago. I hope it gives you a little hope and a little push to make it through this uncomfortable time. http://imgur.com/RxWZFMB
