ZillyNa got a reaction from VSGAnn2014 in Percentage of removed stomach in Gastric sleeve?!
Hello. I'm waiting for sleeve surgery too. In my case I understood that the doctor intends to cut 70-75 % of my stomach, so it will contain just a volume of 150 ml maximum circa. Doing a research for a query similar to this topic, I found that the surgeon decides the amount of percentage to cut basing the evaluation on many factors. There isn't an only size for the result, that is decided depending on the patient conditions. The same surgery is made also for very different health problems of the stomach, for example to eliminate mutating stomach metaplasia. In this case the surgery criteria are the opposite of the aim of weight loss, so they try to preserve the maximum portion of stomach and give to the patient a post op diet studied to gain or keep weight...

I don't remember when slim vomit was not an issue for me, but just last week it happened again when I drank a coke from a can. It also seems to happen when I don't chew well enough. I am 1 year out.

No, you should not be doing that. For most people, sliming means they are eating too much, eating too fast, or not chewing enough, or some combination of those. Try cutting the amount of food you are eating in a meal by a third and see if that helps. If it does not, drastically slow down your eating and chew a lot more (but keep eating the same smaller amount of food). If both of these together don't fix it, get in touch with your surgeon to get checked to see what is going on. Good luck!

    Hi,
Im writing this post to provide support for whoever was in my position,
Yesterday I was released to solid food.
5 years ago i was soo slim but i started gaining weight untill i reached a BMI of 36. I ended up having a resisitant hypertension which required 4 classes of drugs of high doses to control.
I looked so normal, my legs and my hands were of those who are slim but i had it all in my belly and neck, my doctor, the best in the middle east, believed that my central obesity is causing my hypertension and after studying my life style and my attempts to control my weight and my hypertension he suggested that gastric sleeve is the best way to go.
Before having the surgery i thought its going to be so easy, 3 incisions, 2 hours and then everything is alright, i did not know that the first 2 days after surgery will be sooo painful. I didnt know i would suffer that much while sipping Water, I didnt know i would be so depressed and I didnt know that i would find out that food was the main passion in my life.
After the surgery i realized that 80% of my happeness in life was caused by food. I started to feel soo depressed because i couldnt eat, i kept fighting and hurting everyone that speaks to me, i kept snapping at everyone and it seemed like nothing in life would cheer me up, I started having thoughts like the did i do to myself?!! I wasnt that fat and i couldve done it on my own...etc
Now after 4 weeks i lost 13.5 kilos, i lowered my meds from 4 to 2 and tomorrow i will see the dr. And it is very likely to lower my dose to 1 med a day.
About the depression and regret feelings they ended today, when i ate solid food i realized that even with the small quantities i could eat i still can eat whatever i like and still feel the same satisfaction i used to feel when eating the unbelievable amount of food i used to eat.
The point im trying to deliver is:
NO MATTER HOW BAD YOU FEEL IN THE FIRST FEW WEEKS, HANG IN THERE BECAUSE THEY WILL ALL DISAPPEAR AND YOU WILL FEEL GOOD AGAIN AND REALIZE THAT IT WAS THE BEST THING YOU EVER DID!

Hi guys, yesterday I had my gastric sleeve operation. Yesterday evening was awful, like I has been invested by a locomotive, with a lot of hot pain on the stomach. Today, in the morning I didn't believe to be able to stand by myself and instead, big surprise, I did! My I feel good, optimist and I can't wait to go home. I find the sewed holes on the stomach very decorative... Maybe I will change idea about tattoo and decorated my belly neighbours.

Sounds like you are doing great! Just keep walking and sipping. I was surprised myself how quickly I was able to get up and move around after surgery. If you get in your fluids and Protein you should bounce back in no time.

I'm lucky because in Italy this kind of surgery can be paid by the welfare state (if you are in certain health and economic conditions, evaluated every time ).
I could'nt afford this cost, that is very expensive here too, when self paid.
I'm happy to pay taxes to have a public health system.

It may well be true that after I have surgery I won't want it or care for it.. I do believe that's possible.. I just tend to always feel better having a game plan either way..
And yes.. I've talked to some people who either their doctor said it was fine or didn't address it at all.. and my own primary care physician said as long as it wasn't intefering with my weight loss and wasn't causing me gas pain it was okay in moderation. Just didn't give me advice beyond that which is why I was asking for others' experience.
I appreciate that some of you don't agree.. but what works for one may or may not work for another.
However.. I've had some very nice people PM me who have given me advice about how to handle the diet pop issue if I do want to try it post surgery which means I got what I needed to know answered. So I think we can lay this topic to rest and simply agree to disagree.

I didn't drink a lot of diet pop prior to surgery. I drank perhaps one Coke Zero every day, and sometimes didn't even finish the can or bottle. When I learned that diet pop is not recommended, I stopped drinking it. Did I miss it? At first. Once I had surgery, I don't even drink as much coffee as I used to. And trust me, I drank a lot of coffee morning, noon, night. Now I still drink my coffee in the morning, but not so much the rest of the day or evening now. I'd have to say that I of course drink more Water now. I do not miss drinking diet pop. I have no craving for it whatsoever.
The reason it is not recommended by the Bariatric Institute where I had my surgery is because the bubbles fill the pouch, and you are not able to eat food if the bubbles do not dissipate quickly. There was never any mention of it "stretching the pouch or sleeve".
I think you are setting yourself up prior to surgery to have your diet pop regardless of what this surgeon or that surgeon says. If you still really want it after surgery, more power to you. But many things change after surgery. I thought that was bullcrap when I heard it, but it's true.

I will have the surgery on May 25th and I feel the same you described.
I'm scared because I want to throw off this fat coat but I don't know how I 'm without it, under it.
I'm convinced I'm not more able to handle this health and psychological huge problem, so I decide to ask help to the health system.
In my future, I don't know what version of myself I'm going to face to, but I'm sure my body will thank me and my life quality will increase.
But, again, beyond wisdom, I'm scared, I'm doubting....

    we'll have a better life

Instead of losing who you are, you will discover who you are. Weight loss shrinks your belly, not your sense of humor. Most of our bariatric teams include access to a psychologist who can help us navigate through the mental and emotional changes that come with a shape we are not familiar with.
You don't have to eat healthy food. You get to eat healthy food. You will no longer be a slave to the processed food industry and their marketing machine. Their stuff is not really food anyway. They produce factory edibles full of chemicals and pesticides. With you new high Protein lifestyle, your body will thrive instead of just exist under reduced circumstances.
You don't have to exercise. You will be in a new body the enables you to exercise. The human body is built to move. That is why we have arms and legs and muscles and joints. We were not meant to become part of the sofa, but that is what our excess weight has done to us,
You will get to re-invent yourself. You may be shy now, but when you lose weight, you gain confidence. When someone gives you are hard time about your body or medical choices, you will either want to educate them or cold-konk them. But you won't take it any more and hide behind your weight with shame.
Although it may be painful, people can't keep their opinions to themselves and they will expose how they really think of you. That's when you realize that you may indeed have to adjust your circle of friends or distance yourself from toxic family who would rather see you fail than be thinner, happier and healthier than they are.
Chirp up. You can ditch the spiral of despair and grief for the old you and accept the challenge and adventure of creating the best you that you are supposed to be.
Are you familiar with the comedienne Lisa Lampanelli? She got sleeved a couple of years ago and is just as funny as she ever was.
You have already had your surgery and may as well hang on for the ride.
By the way, the discomfort and nausea will go away. Before you know it, you will be at your one year anniversary and wonder where the time went.
