mmy reacted to Band07 in So many questions about MGB
I'm an original band patient (2007) then revised to sleeve (2013) and MGB April 2014 so I'm 1 year 1 month post op. I'm very happy with my MGB, I haven't had any issues with malaborption so far and I'm honestly not great with my Vitamins. I take a couple one a days and B12 when I remember it. My bypass is around 9' and I was only 189 the day of surgery. Dairy and high sugar give me TERRIBLE gas and high fats make my dump but really everything I eat goes through me pretty quickly. I'm happy to answer any questions.

Hi Julie.. I lived in the uk for 6 years .. Do you suffer from diabetes or had PCOS? How old are you? And did the surgeon mention how much will your loop be or how much does he suggest?
Lap band is useless btw and it is expected that within 2 years it will not be used anymore
I initially wanted a sleeve but my surgeon said the following:-
1- MGB is reversible, so if anything happens God forbids there is always a way back and plan B
2- MGB is associated with less risk of bleeding and leakage compared to sleeve
3- type 2 diabetes respond better to MGB than to sleeve
4- the chance of regaining weight with MGB is much less than with sleeve
5- % of loss is almost the same
6- chance of getting GERD or reflux with sleeve is higher than with MGB
7- quality of eating and speed of recovery is better and faster with MGB compared to sleeve

Oh and I forgot to mention. Theoretically, MGB should cause less dumping syndrome compared to RNY.. However, I did experience what very much seemed like dumping syndrome from Protein shakes (0 sugar 0carbs) tried different brands and all had the same effect on me. So dr advised to stay away from all forms of Protein Shakes and I have been feeling much better ever since.. It's strange that the Protein shake caused those symptoms because dumping syndrome is mainly cause by eating sugar

@@mmy There's no possible way you could have gained fat weight so it is just Water and probably your body retaliating against what it feels is starvation. Definitely get your fluids in and look into unflavored Protein Powder to add to your food or even water. I think the amount you've lost is incredible! Stay strong!

Ok sorry that I'm bombarding this forum with my posts but it seems I have so many questions. I was wondering if after getting the bypass surgery (either RNY or mini gastric bypass) are will still able to digest and absorb Vitamin pills (and not capsules) like prenatal Vitamins for example?
Also I came across a Bariatric once a day capsule under the brand name ProCare Health . Was wondering if any of you have used it before? Is it advisable to use a once a day pill? I have read somewhere that chewables are the best for RNY patients and it has to be taken 2-4 times for best absorption.. Is this true?

mmy welcome to my world. My weight is constantly fluctuating and in the beginning it infuriated me. I at times have put on 1.5 kgs, but I know now it's because my body is holding onto Fluid. Our bodies may hold onto Fluid whilst burning fat.
Try not to stress too much and stick to you plan, the weight will come off.

I didn't do the calculations for you. How much Protein are you actually consuming?
Just make sure you are getting at least 64 oz of Fluid (I am not sure what that is in liters) and are meeting your protein target.

I had RNY gastric bypass surgery which is different than mini-bypass, so my answers may not be of much help. So let's see. You lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks, but then in the next week, you gained 2.2 pounds back.
It is not unusual for individuals after weight loss surgery to hit stalls, even gaining a little weight during the journey. It is fairly common. The three most important elements after surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is really secondary because your body is converting stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.
It concerns me that you have stopped taking your Protein shakes.
My guidelines read a minimum of 75-90 grams of protein per day.
180 ml of milk is 6.3 ounces of milk which has 6 grams of protein
since you are drinking 2 of these per day, that gives you 12 grams of protein
100 grams of meat gives you 26 grams of protein
1 egg provides 6 grams of protein.
So overall you are consuming 44 grams of protein a day which is much less than your goal.
If you fortify your milk by adding a 1/4 cup of dry milk to each glass of your liquid milk, this would add an additional 6 grams of protein per glass of milk. That would put your total up to 56 grams per day. Still a little on the low side.
It will be hard to meet you daily protein requirement without using Protein Shakes. So I would recommend experimenting with the various forms out there. In general I hate protein shakes. But I had to consume them at least until I could reach my protein requirements from meals alone. You don't have to like protein shakes, only tolerate them. For me I found that I could tolerate Muscle Milk Light (vanilla Cream) powder blended with Water and with a half a banana blended in. So that is what I used.

Well I haven't reached there yet. I'm only 1 week post-op. But I guess the best feeling (which is actually the reason I got this surgery done in the first place) would be to achieve a healthy pregnancy. I have PCOS and 1 child needing bone marrow transplant from a matched sibling donor (now before anyone says anything we would really want another baby no matter what)
Second reason would be that I really want to be able to wear whatever I can and still look good in it.

Milk can be a Protein supplement. 8 ounces of 1% milk equals 8 grams of Protein. If you supplement the milk by adding 1/4 cup of dry powdered milk to the 8 ounces, that will give you 14 grams of protein per glass.
After surgery my taste buds changed dramatically. I could not even tolerate the Water in the hospital. It tasted overly chlorinated. I could drink it only tolerated slivers of ice. As time goes on your taste buds will continue to change so you might keep trying every now and then. Eventually most things will return but it may take months/years.
Your daily Fluid requirement is the sum of all fluids you consume during the day. Water counts. Milk counts. The milk or water used in your Protein shake counts. The liquid part of a Soup counts. The water you drink to swallow your Vitamins count. Tea and Decaf coffee count. Some people find it easier to drink hot liquids, others cold. It varies by person.

HI, yeah I think at one time I might have had a BMI in the high 30s, but I decided to have the
gastric Bypass RNY at a BMI of about 34; then when I went into surgery at about 32.
That was 3 months ago, I'm now BMI 25.9.
I decided to have this surgery because I'd yo-yo dieted forever, losing then gaining back some
40 lbs multiple times, but mainly because I had most every co-morbid element I can think of:
Diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, bad joint pain, sleep apnea, etc.
I no longer have ANY of those problems.
The best decision I've ever made

You also may have developed lactose intolerance. I had similar symptoms right after surgery when I ate or drank anything with dairy in it. It was cured really quickly by switching to a lactose free milk. I like Fairlife. I am not 5.5 months out from surgery and I can tolerate dairy again, but only in small amounts. I still drink my fairlife milk with my Protein powder, but I can now tolerate regular yogurt, cheese, and pudding made with regular milk.
I hope you figure it out.

mmy reacted to YumiMumi in Severely depressed after mini gastric bypass
@mmy I'm so SO sorry you have had this experience, how traumatic. I think that it was borderline negligent of your surgeon to discuss changing procedures with you on the day of surgery rather than allow you the time to think it over. Having said that, I too have read that the sleeve can be less effective in some circumstances, but I think the level of complication for both procedures is similar - just different.
I think what is important for you now is to focus on the future. I KNOW how hard that is. I am 2 weeks post op gastric bypass (revision from failed band taken out 3 months ago). I didn't vomit blood but I did have a very tough first week (see other posts of mine) and on day 3/4/5 had MASSIVE buyers remorse (as a lot of people do).
I can tell you though, that even though it was (and still is some days) a struggle for various reasons (getting enough Protein in, nausea, fatigue, etc), I am now glad I had the courage to do this. I am a similar BMI to you and super happy to be down 20 pounds already. I have a 3 year old and I want him to grow up knowing me as a fit an healthy mother.
I know its hard but hang in there. I suspect you would have been going through "buyers remorse" no matter what procedure you had - sleeve or bypass. But, you have the bypass now so get excited and start visualizing the new YOU.
TRUST ME.... you WILL feel better, and quickly.... both emotionally and physically. Big hugs to you.
