NewLA got a reaction from christiR in Officially sleeved!
I was sleeved the same day!!!! I had no pain, but was very nauseous on the morphine took me most of the night for them to regulate the nausea. Once I was off the morphine I was good. Discharged on Friday with still minimal pain, just had 0 energy. Able to get 32 oz of Fluid down and haven't touched a pain med. I'm starting to think maybe they didn't do the procedure....

NewLA reacted to bini120 in I got sleeved yesterday: here's the blow by blow
These accounts helped me when I was pre-op so wanted to lay this out there for folks whose big day is coming:
9am - checked into hospital (NYU Medical Center)
9.30- 10.30 - changed into my gown and had some more pre-op testing like urine analysis, weigh-in, blood pressure check.
10.30 - 11am - met with my surgeon again and met with the anesthesiologist. Was encouraged to ask any questions I didn't ask before in the process.
11am - got taken in wheelchair to the OPERATING THEATER. This I wasn't expecting - I thought they'd sedate me in another room and trolley me to the OR when I was out but I got to meet the entire surgical team who were prepping for the operation. I couldn't help make jokes that it felt like I was abducted by aliens with all the huge lights point towards me from the ceiling and folks in blue scrubs and masks all around me.
The last thing I remember is an oxygen mask put over my nose and mouth - and then, black.
1pm - I came to in the post-op recovery room with wonderful nurses taking care of me. I ended up staying in recovery overnight as they didn't have any beds available. My husband wasn't able to stay overnight with me for this reason.
1pm - 7pm - I was very groggy all day as I kept pushing the button that released a v potent painkiller. My family came to visit on and off as well but I was pretty dozy and nauseous.
7pm - 6am - I was in and out of sleep. I must admit it was a very uncomfortable night as I couldn't get comfy in the bed, they had attached a blood pressure cuff that inflated every hour and woke me up. I also had the gas pain in my chest and back and pain at incision sites. But I can't say enough nice things about the nurses who never left me for extended periods of time. I also dreamed of food the whole night
6am -9am - The team wanted me to pee and I went 3 times which they seemed pleased with. I texted my husband to come over to be with me - poor guy had to wait downstairs as the recovery room was filling up with other patients.
9am-12 - I was desperate to go home but my doc told me that the only way I could be discharged was if they got positive labs from my bloodwork (they couldn't find veins so they poked me 6-7 times which was a bit traumatic as I hate needles). She also wanted me to finish approx 400 cc of Water and Propel so that she knew I could tolerate it and keep hydrated at home. It took me 3 hours to do this.
12.30 - I had a final conversation with my team at which point they discharged me with a bunch of pain, nausea, spasm and antacid med.
1pm - I got home and went to bed for a proper sleep. I've only just woken up and feel ok to look at my phone. Was too nauseous to read
    Other Notes:
I have 4 incisions - the one at the belly button is most uncomfortable and 'pulls' if I move incorrectly.
I seem to need my husband's help to get in and out of bed but I'm sure this only temporary.
Per one of my previous posts, I did cheat quite a bit during my pre-op diet (bad bini120!) but I guess my liver was small enough to do the surgery.
While I may have dreamed about foods, I'm not hungry at all. I'm sipping my clear fluids very slowly today as I don't want to overdo it, but no issues getting the liquids down. Tomorrow I can start with the Protein shakes.
Thank you everyone for answering all my questions pre-op. Looking forward to where this journey takes me next.
Any questions, I'd be delighted to answer them.

NewLA reacted to OutsideMatchInside in Where do you buy clothes?
I buy all my workout clothes at Walmart, they have really nice stuff. I only buy danskin.

I buy my bras at Soma. My boobs are huge, they are the only option and bras are amazing. Sports bras I purchased on ebay, new, I only wear the kind that go by band and cup size and they come up high on the chest.

Unlike a lot of people that post here, I refuse to wear used clothing. I just can't I think it is repulsive. However I do have a limit on what i will spend on a single item and that is $30, dresses $50, and as always no limit on purses and shoes.

I am hourglass shaped with a small waist, with the exception of my breasts and arms i am small on top. I wear anything from 12 to 16.
    I shop at...
Old Navy - shorts, dresses, tshirts, rompers
banana Republic - tops, the bottoms I am a little too hippy for
Tommy Hilfiger - their stuff is very generously cut, you can probably go down a size
Saks off 5th - you just have to look
Nordstrom Rack - again you just have to look and try things on
    The Limited
Forever 21- I don't know why people turn their nose up at it, I love the cheap tank tops and you can find cheap dresses too. I still wear plus size there
Charlotte Russe - I still wear plus size there (the sizes like forever 21 are juniors), if you get on their text list they have tons of great sales, often you can get dresses for $20, tops and bottoms for $10

I feel it's the doctor's responsibility to know how their staff works... The first two surgeons I had consultations with I decided not to go with due to the interaction with the office staff... This is a pet peeve of mine, to me if your a doctor your office staff is the face of the practice and sets the tone with the patients.. You should want them to be as top notch as you are, if you care about your patiences.
I would just say I'm not sure why your giving me the run around but after you claimed you submitted the documents , my insurance company has no record of it. I don't appreciate being treated this way as a patient as I need my focus to be on preparing for my procedure and not micromanaging my paperwork for insurance. Please send me an email when you have submitted these documents as I want it in writing because your spoken words seem meaningless.
That might be harsh but I very direct and when I'm pushed too far I just call people out on their nonsense.

My surgeon requires that I write a "Letter of Understanding" and my support person has to submit one also. But they pretty much outline what is expected in the letter.
    My letter has to include:
A - the risk of obesity
B - why the operation is performed
C- How the operation is performed
D - The expected benefits of the surgery
E - the possible risks of surgery
F - the alternatives to surgery
G - the importance of long term follow up
H - a detailed description of your support system
I - Intro to nutrition for Weight loss surgery and the post- op diet stages

Hey everyone! As much as I like to read about the different stories about weight loss surgery, I love really meeting those behind those stories. So I decided to create a local meetup group for people who are in the process of getting weightloss surgery and folks who have already gotten the surgery.
If any of you are in the Maryland, Virginia or Washington D.C. area check out my meetup group: http://www.meetup.com/Bari-fabulous/.
We are having our first meetup late May/Early June!

NewLA reacted to Cape Crooner in What are your go to "snacks"?
Well whatever works for you. Me, I was a low carb dieter for 45 years. I got fat eating cheese, cold cuts, and nuts (without counting calories like most low carb eaters).
Most of my meals are heavy Protein and that's 90% of my calories. The topic of this thread is "snacks" not meals.
I also don't think all carbs are inherently bad. Some have a lot of calories and I avoid those. For me, the biggest issue is when in the course of the day I eat carbs.
If I eat them early, I'll be hungry all day long. If I eat under a 100 calories of rice cakes late in the day (2 hours before my Protein laden dinner), it works quite well FOR ME...

Let's face it people- for some who have to self- pay for surgery, going over the border is the only choice they may have. Saying "aren't you worth it" is somewhat demeaning. We are ALL worth it. Unfortunately we don't ALL have the resources to afford it. I'm lucky. Good coverage by insurance and a world- class medical team via the University of Chicago. Sure- it's a win- win for me.
BUT- the likely benefits to a persons overall health, especially when it is a self- pay situation in choosing over the border surgery FAR outweighs any hand holding your surgeon may do. Yes, I see my doc at post op visits. But my PCP could hold my hand while he is following up on my care just as well.
Having an opinion is one thing- projecting negatives that are hurtful- possibly due to finances, quite another. We all walk different paths in life. How we get from A to B doesn't matter as long as we get there.
    Play nice people.

I absolutely LOVE the Premier 'ready to drink' shakes.
    chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and banana.
I take one shake, a few TB of coffee crystals, and a pump or 2 of Torani sugar free syrup... and it's like a sinfully caloric coffee drink, except it's not! #proteincoffee #proteinicedcoffee
Favorite recipe RN is banana shake, salted caramel Syrup, Greek Nescafe crystals. Mix it up and toss in the freezer...

NewLA reacted to eoconnell24 in What made you chose bypass vs sleeve?
I was also dead set on the sleeve. After my initial consult with my surgeon (who told me it was up to me which one I wanted) I started doing a LOT of reading and research. One thing that is consistent no matter what book, pamphlet, success story etc you read is that you have to be 100% honest with yourself through the whole process or you won't be as successful. I had chosen the sleeve bc I didn't think I needed the negative reinforcement of dumping, not thinking I have a problem with sweets or fried food. But once I began to really be honest about my relationship with food I realized that I do eat those things more than I initially wanted to admit (let's be honest, if I didn't I most likely wouldn't be overweight enough to be considering WLS in the first place lol). So I went back to my surgeon to talk to him about it and I ended up switching to RNY.
