I'm being revised from VSG to DS tomorrow and I'll can tell you this, if stinky poop and farts will help get the weight off and KEEP IT OFF, LONG TERM, bring on the smellies cuz I'm looking for the best surgery and screw the rest! LOL! Just make sure your doc is selling you on the TRUE DS and not the Sadi/Loop type DS. They are VERY DIFFERENT SURGERIES. Best of luck to you!

Posts lie these drive me craaaazzzzyyyyy. Just because a person had VSG does not doom them to failure and choosing RNY does not mean you will successfully lose all your weight and keep it off. Both surgeries are nothing more than a TOOL. If you don't learn proper nutrition and develop good eating habits, you WILL NOT succeed. I lost more than 120lbs with my sleeve. I LOVE my sleeve and would give anything in the world to keep it. I'm not revising because I suddenly woke up and saw the light and realized I chose the wrong surgery. I'm revising because I need to to maintain esophageal health
While RNY might be the right decision for you, it is not the right decision for everyone and I don't want anyone choosing between the two procedures to be swayed by your one "friend" who didn't succeed with the sleeve. From what you said, it's because she didn't develop good habits, not because the surgery failed her.
I guess I'm just cranky today. I am a successful sleever and proud of it!!

I just read this excellent essay and it brought to mind some of the posts I see on here, especially related to taking time off for surgery and when to return to work.
I know for me, I didn't really get serious about exploring surgery until my obesity had an even more negative impact on my professional life than usual.
One thing I am learning throughout this process is the importance of balance.
Although addressed to academics, I find this relevant to just about everyone.

    Leaving Las Vegas.
On Saturday we dressed up for a night on the town, just like we do every year. Only this year over the course of the evening men and women complimented me on my cocktail dress or told me I looked beautiful.
What was more amazing was I FELT beautiful. I felt like I could smile graciously and accept their compliments with confidence.
Not because I was the thinnest woman in the room or the most lovely but because I am fighting hard for who I am. I fight hard for mental, spiritual, and physical wholeness and health. I feel strong. I feel wise. I feel beautiful.
I feel like for the first time in two decades my outside is starting to match the inside.
I am more proud of that than the number on the scale any day.
Small decisions lead to big changes in a year.r

I was just over 40. I'm a tall man and carried my weight pretty good (learned that over decades of being overweight). I'm so glad I did it. I'll toot my own horn and say I look damn good! I could never have done this without it - I tried for years.
I will say that I got comments from other much larger patients at the hospital. They kept saying "you don't look like you need this!" I kept thanking, "do I need to wait until I've got one foot in the grave like you before I do something?" Like most people I felt a lot of shame about my weight and this criticism wasn't easy to hear, but in hindsight IDGAF. I feel great, I look great, and I can enjoy the rest of my life without obesity ruining everything I want to do!

When I have the DS done in a month and a half, I am REALLY afraid of not losing because I had the sleeve prior to this surgery and I won't be getting a sleeve revision. Am I really going to lose weight? Is getting just the DS worth it? The doctors say I will, but I would like to hear it from some veterans of this 2 part procedure who actually had 2 different parts! Thanks in advance...

I've posted my story several times in other threads which you can find by clicking my name. To make the long story short(er), I had my sleeve 8/22/2013 & then on 12/29/2015 a revision of the (dilated) sleeve & the single-anastomosis duodenal switch. I also had my hiatal hernia repaired at the second surgery. A hiatal hernia can certainly be a cause of reflux symptoms.
Personally, I would not have a gastric bypass. I don't like the artificial opening from the stomach pouch to the intestine. The duodenal switch (classic or SA-DS) has the sleeve gastrectomy that leaves you with a fully-functional stomach, just much smaller.
I chose not to have a DS at the time of my original sleeve because the amount of malabsorption scared me. But 2 years later I was still at a BMI of just over 35, on 4 insulin injections a day, Metformin, atorvastatin (Lipitor) & 3 blood pressure meds so I decided something more had to be done. I am now 2½ months post-op & am off all insulin & the atorvastatin. One blood pressure med is discontinued & the other (a combo) is half what it was & I will probably be off of it by the end of the month. We did try decreasing the Metformin, but that didn't work - yet.
And - drum roll - as of today, my BMI is below 30! I am no longer obese.
