I just stay away from people as much as possible for exactly that reason. I'm too old to deal with drama from people I don't even particularly like.
This new philosophy has made my life so much easier.

Absolutely no judgement here but I would like to bring up some ideas. As a nurse I would be concerned about the fact that cross addiction is an enormous concern. After WLS people have an
increased chance of becoming addicted to other substances since food is no longer feeding our addiction.
I would also be concerned that alcohol and cocaine could upset the electrolyte apple cart and be more dangerous for a person that has had surgery vs one who hasn't. Please be careful, it would be crazy if you changed your life with weight loss and ended up an alcoholic.

I never took any narcotics I was given a prescription strength acetaminophen and to be honest I only took 3-4. The pain was there but it was manageable and after a week or so it eased up greatly! I think you should be alright with out any narcotics! You already told us your not wimpy so I think it won't be to bad for you! It is the best thing I have ever done for myself and I'm very glad I did, I hope you have the same feelings!

I have to say, I never took any narcotics after coming home from 2 c-sections, and the sleeve was a piece of cake. Didn't need pain meds at all. It was a bit painful, but not unbearably so. Good luck!!

How bad is the post op pain? Is it possible to get through without the use of narcotics? I hate narcotics and usually only take Motrin. Can you take liquid Motrin? I have birthed 3 kidney stones with only Motrin so I'm not a wimp. And information is greatly appreciated.

onehappychick got a reaction from hennagirl in Low BMI and Gastric Sleeve
I have a BMI of 35. I'm 5'9" and weigh in at 233. I have had lots of my co-workers (which are also ER nurses) tell me I don't need the surgery. Mind you these girls have BMI's of 22-24. So at 44 I have adopted the attitude of I really don't care what you think. It is my body, my health, my need to be around for my three girls.
My surgery is scheduled for 06/07/16. I am nervous but feel so blessed to be able to do this. I lost my mom at the age of 49 to a brain tumor and my dad to a cancer called Liposarcoma, which means it arose from his fat cells., at the age of 57. So as I creep closer to these ages I want to be as healthy as I can.

onehappychick reacted to happy1957 in Hair Loss After Surgery
Both my sister and I did not start losing hair until the 5th month after surgery. When it starts to fall, it's a lot and often in clumps. I counted hairs in one clump and it scared me. 27 hairs in one small clump on top of hundreds of single hairs. Each brushing of dry hair would be a brush full of hair the equivalent tof brushing a cat during shedding season. The shower would have an accumulation of hair enough to clog the drain screen I hope you are among the few who don't lose your hair. I also think I am a slow loser. I've never lost more than 2 lbs in any given week You have lost 40 lbs in less than three months, that is not slow. Congratulations to you!

onehappychick reacted to NewSetOfCurves in NSV: Wearing a Bikini with NO Coverup! FINALLY!
Last summer I was able to wear 2 piece, but with a coverup. I was still conscious of my tummy and thighs. But after recovering from plastics and working HARD in the gym 5-6 days a week, I can officially say that I will be hitting the beach this spring without a coverup. When I put on my 2 piece and saw my pic, I think I cried and cried for a good 10 minutes. Cried for my experience as an obese person, cried for the struggles of life post-op, cried because I WORKED HARD for this dang it, and I have finally arrived. People...I have FINALLY arrived!
Sorry for the crappy picture! My husband "cleaned it" with something that was not Windex...and I have yet to purchase a full length mirror! Isn't crazy how our past obesity still rules us even after we've shed the weight. Ugh! I am going to go and buy a full length mirror today!

onehappychick reacted to Mom26 in After the worst 3 months of my life, today I smiled
Some of you may remember that just 2 weeks after my sleeve surgery, my son was shockingly diagnosed with Stage IV Rectal Cancer with metastasis to his liver (5 liver tumors). My world shattered. I didn't eat. Didn't drink. Barely got out of bed and wasn't functioning in any normal capacity. I was just at the point where I was trying to learn how to be healthy with my new body and failed every single day. I received so many words of encouragement from this community, so much support and so many helpful suggestions/tips. And even when I'd sink in my chair, something someone said would remind me of what I needed to do - because I was no help to him if I couldn't help myself.
Jason's first liver surgery was last Monday. They removed 2 very invasive tumors from one lobe that were much deeper than the scans portrayed. Next month, three more liver tumors will be removed. The chemo has caused abscesses that resulted in his hospitalization for days at a time. It's caused mouth sores that make it impossible for him to eat. It's caused intolerability to the cold. And we're in the Northeast - where we've had a blizzard and too many other storms. Yet he continues to smile every day and encourage others who are fighting this awful battle to never give up.
Last week, while I stayed at the hospital with him, I brought my Protein Shakes. I reminded him to drink his Water and I did the same. I walked with him around the unit. I ordered eggs for Breakfast and chicken for lunch/dinner. I had chili for a snack. I felt like I was finally getting it. And was able to share my recovery and food tips with him.
And today, this happened, and the sparkle in my eye that has been absent and the smile on my face that left in November reappeared. (sorry the pic is upside down... )
