  1. I am struggling something fierce and I seriously regret having surgery.

Yes I do very much so my husband also had bypass 5 weeks after me and he regrets it as well

May I ask why do you regret it? I'm pre-op and scared I'm going to have these regrets

Sent from my LGLS675 using the BariatricPal App

Be careful--- and please don't take a few peoples regrets or "buyers remorse" as the status quo. Most of us who've had surgery are SO very thankful, have been extremely successful and would do it again and again if that was what was needed.

Yes, some people have complications. That happens with ANY procedure. Nothing is 100%. Those people are usually the loudest and can easily drown out the ones who are content.

The best thing you can do is BE PREPARED. Know what lay ahead, be willing to do the work, and make needed changes to your lifestyle. Don't expect this to be an "easy out"- it isn't. But it does become easier and easier rather quickly, to the point that you no longer see yourself as a bariatric patient, rather, a new "normal" for you.

Good luck on your journey!!! There is a lot of support here to be had...and remember: preparedness is KEY. KNOWLEDGE is essential. If you are not getting enough info from your team, RESEARCH!

  2. So my question is to all of you, how many of you are revisions from LapBand?

I tend to get really pissy about people who haven't lived with a LapBand judging me for having revision surgery.

If you haven't walked in my shoes, don't judge-you haven't experienced multiple "stuck" episodes where you feel like you will die because you cannot even swallow your own saliva. You haven't experienced the feeling of food sitting in your esophagus, not getting past the band, because the Band has impacted your ability to swallow.

My request is that you not be quick to judge what you don't know. Don't make assumptions that band failure is strictly caused by the user. Don't judge my ability to be successful with the VSG because I had a device in place that did not work the way it was supposed to.

Don't for a minute assume anything about any of us that are forced to revise-I was prepared for my LapBand surgery and I fully expected to have the band until I died. I was compliant with routine maintenance-saw the surgeon, bariatric Doctor, weight management center staff including dietitian and exercise physiologist for over six years.

I don't need any of you to judge whether or not I was worthy of revision surgery.

Bottom line is, if this isn't your journey, don't make assumptions about those of us who are.

Heck, my surgeon doesn't even do them anymore.

Nor does mine, or anyone in his group.

  3. So to piggy back on the question.

What are your thoughts on WLS on folks who swear they were not addicted to food, rarely over ate, only consumed 1500 calories or less daily. etc?

How does reducing their stomach size really help? I get that malabsorbtion might, but the sleeve or band? Again, no judgement, just confused.

I don't know how a person gets obese without overeating on a regular basis! But I have seen those posts too. I have no idea.

As far as food addiction, I think I used and sometimes abused food but I'm not one of those that struggled to comply with the food stages/rules after surgery by any means. So I actually don't think I was ever a food addict.

But if we are saying food addict is like other substance addiction, there must also be recovery right?

Sent from my SM-N910T using the BariatricPal App

I got obese not by overeating, but by having to take 60mg of prednisone a day, monthly decadron IV infusions and the inability to be active due to a debilitating illness. The end result of the steroids? No metabolism. Little to no adrenal function.

There are those of us around here that didn't overeat. I'm no better than anyone else because mine wasn't a food addiction, I'm simply saying that there ARE other reasons for serious weight gain and inability to lose it.

I personally know several people who had Lap Band and serious repercussions from it. Horrid stuff!! Two went on to have Sleeve, one did nothing after it was removed. The two sleeve revisions have been Ubër successful.

You mean there was ANOTHER way to look at one??

Oh, those are a lot of fun!

I might just post one of those when I see them, instead of trying explain why someone's comment makes no sense.

You know, 'cause words are hard 'n' stuff.

Yes!!! Throw a flag on the play!!

  6. I want to lose more weight so I am at a healthy BMI but physically I am small enough as is. If I ever get my skin removed, I will lose a size or 2.

I was morbidly obese in the super category for a long time. That has changed my body forever and my muscle. I am smaller now at a higher weight than I was in college. That is because of my muscle density.

So you might not need to lose more pounds. You can lose inches working out/surgery.

As weird as losing a lot of weight is for us, it is just as weird to the people around us and I think we forget it. I'm half the person I used to be, almost literally, and that is a lot for me to handle and other people also.

I went for a plastics consult last month to get a handle on the costs so I could financially prepare for it.. Surgeon was willing to do the procedures immediately. Basically said what you did-- skin removal would take care of the last few pounds.

Because my gain was directly related to meds and my now in-remission disease, he wasn't concerned with me maintaining a year after I was finished losing.

Lottery tickets need to be purchased lol. Plastics is EXPENSIVE!!

  7. @@BigViffer

Thank you. Funny enough, I don't see myself NOW as overweight. Because my weight GAIN was so fast (meds etc caused it) I was always startled by my heavy appearance then-- I always expected to see the trim, fit person I've once again become.

Like many, it became "who" I was to others--

But your suggestion to smile and laugh it off---excellent. I appreciate your insight.

  8. Last night I was at a "girls night out" with about 11 friends. We say we're playing a dice game, but really, it's an excuse to get out together once a month, let loose and have some cocktails.

I had not seen a few in a month or two, and was "praised" for my weight loss.

Oddly enough, at the end of the night, three of them came to me and said "don't lose any more".

I stopped dead in my tracks.

I'm still about 10-12 lbs from goal. A HEALTHY goal. The weight I was 10 years ago. The only time I was ever "underweight" I was 24 and took losing a few pounds too far.

I was kind of flabbergasted, speechless. (Believe me- words not falling off my lips doesn't happen often.) I "recovered" and jokingly pointed out the couple of spots that still needed to diminish.

Has this ever happened to any of you? How did you respond?

  9. So sorry to hear this...

As stated above, it is often a viral attack on the 7 th cranial nerve- the facial nerve.

In my experience, any of my patients who experienced it did well on anti virals ( think acyclovir which is used for herpes simplex ) prednisone and anti inflammatories can help alleviate the symptoms.

Bells Palsy is self-limiting. When it resolves, that is typically it. The grade does have an impact on lasting effects.

Since you are under a doctors care now for it, rest and treat as s/he prescribed.

Should you find that you have lasting and noticeable facial droop, know that we now use Botox to help lift the sagging. Not what you want to hear now, but file that tidbit of info away should you need it.

  10. Lovely idea to bring this post about...

My favorite time of year is always Autumn... which makes Thanksgiving my favorite holiday, as well.

    My Thankfulness this year...

First, and foremost, to MYSELF. For having the courage to seize the opportunity presented to me and to make the most of it- which brought me back to the person I was 10 years ago, albeit a HELL of a lot wiser.

Obviously, my children. They are my heart. (Even though they are literally arguing right now in a group chat I'm in with them...notifications dinging like crazy! Lol...not even in the same states, they're debating...)

The joys of discovering new people, new experiences, looking at life in HD vision with clarity. Today, these are the things I'm grateful for.

  11. Ok folks, you all heard of cravings right? Sometimes things come to mind that you actually know are not what u are supposed to eat but it's a thought. I don't come here to get a reaction out of anyone, I come on here to get different points of views from those who have done it before me and/or are currently at my stage. Suggestions are always welcomed and alternatives.

So for example one gentleman said not chips but try cheese squares. And for the record I can ask about French fries 3 weeks out but it doesn't mean I'm going for it...i look for what people are doing or have done to replace those cravings. I never said I was eating those things already.

Thankfully, with the help of this tool (sleeve) and by the grace of my God I have lost 30lbs in just a little over 3 weeks by eating the right things and following my diet. So I do take my choices very seriously.

Lastly @@LisaMergs I can laugh because I actually thought that starting your sentence with "not to be rude" was funny. I cannot control other people's emotion and how they react to whatever anyone posts. So if they chimed in that's their choice. The same affect follows with people looking at your post with how you started and would chime in just the same. These are open forums and it's part of it. The best thing in these places is to never take it personal.

Um yeah. I've heard of cravings. My opinion ? Get over it. You (globally speaking) were overweight, had surgery and are supposedly trying to get better. Why TF anyone is going to blow it is beyond me- and they should have been flagged as not ready for surgery by their psych eval.

I find it minblowingly STUPID that people ask about chips tacos etc early on or during weight loss. And even MORE idiotic that they don't have BASIC COMMON SENSE.

So yes. I know what cravings are...

And I also know that I can run a 15k and wear a size S dress and 6/8 skinny jeans 7.5 months out because I GAF about myself.

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Man, not to be rude or anything but take it easy. Life goes on, breath and don't take it personal...

Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

The only thing I take personal is my own weight loss, health and the well being of those I love.

    The rest? Ancillary, at best.

  12. You are early out. There are plastic surgeons who can put some junk in the trunk. After a year or so you might fill out some on your own.

I had to have shoulder reconstruction about 9 weeks ago, so I haven't been able to do squats, leg presses, etc....I hope when I get to the gym, I can work on building the muscle back up :)

Mine is GONE too. Flat assed gone

    Planks and lunges... Still nada.
