  1. On a side note: I think it's true that patients aren't blamed for chronic diseases like e. g. rheumatoid arthritis or type 1 diabetes or MS etc. However, when it comes to diseases like alcoholism or type 2 diabetes things are different. Patients have to take a lot of blame when it comes to type 2 diabetes ("just stop eating") or alcoholism ("just stop drinking").
  2. @@PorkChopExpress I couldn't have said it better. I always get a blood pressure spike when I see that people equate having to lose 20 lbs with having to lose 100 or 200 lbs.
  3. Meh, I have bad bursitis in the right shoulder. On sick leave now and I guess it will be the next week as well as I'm still on oxycodone, cortisone and metamizol. Not being able to take NSAIDs stinks but luckily there are alternatives.
  4. It didn't change at all. I didn't learn anything new. It wasn't the "not knowing about nutrition" that was the problem. I have a three year education in the field of nutrition and I was always very interested in nutrition after that. It was the "not being able to apply the knowledge about nutrition" that was the problem.
  5. Same in Germany. Not perfect, especially with the dual system kind of health care (GKV and PKV), but when I read about the issues people are having in the USA when it comes to health care, I'm glad that I live in a country where almost everybody has health insurance.
  6. Having noticed anything but I might add that my hair is cut very, very short.
  7. I don't feel that overwhelmed by food advertisement. I use an ad blocker when browsing the net, I usually don't watch TV channels with lots of commercials on (I pay an additional fee each month to be able to view certain channels that only have a few spots between shows and they're usually not for food except for one of these cooking boxes and I'm not interested in that). As for drive through restaurants etc - my favorite pizzeria doesn't deliver so I'm usually too lazy to drive by and get a pizza, I like burgers but not the stuff you can get at the fast food places in Germany. Again, our favorite place regarding this is a place that doesn't deliver and we haven't been there for ages.
  8. @ Given the fact that so many people struggle with weight loss and maintenance even after WLS the price isn't obviously that cheap. If it was, there wouldn't be so much struggling. What helps me paying the price is thinking about the price I'd have to pay for the behaviors I want to indulge in - the results are simply not pleasant.
  9. I never felt like being in the background with a BMI of 46. I always felt very vulnerable and overly visible, always being ready for a response should someone made a nasty comment. In fact I feel way less "visible" since reaching a less-overweight physique. I simply seem to "blend in" now.
  10. Well, everything comes at a price. Just like going to the store and buying stuff. You have to pay a price for it. Some things are worth the price you'd have to pay and other things aren't. Maybe you have to cut back on a fancy vacation to be able to afford a certain product you really want to buy or that you really need to buy. And only you decide it you want to shell out the money for the product. I don't think there is an upside to being overweight. I really don't. However, being thin comes at a price (at least for people like us who have to struggle all the time with food and weight) - and that price may be high. And one has to evaluate from time to time if "being thin" is worth the price you have to pay. I don't know if I've gotten you wrong in your post as well but for me "missing things" is not about a certain body shape - it's about behaviors or things I didn't have to do while being obese. On some days (well, depending on how stressful life is on a lot of days) I just want to order food into the house so I don't have to bother with shopping and cooking, I just want to collapse on the sofa instead of going out running. I don't want to go to work by bike but I simply want to get into the car and make the way in half the time. I want to eat without thinking about "nutrition". On most days I don't want to get up early to prepare food for the day or do yoga etc. - but it's the price I have to pay and I'm paying it because I think it's worth the price. Maybe some day I will decide I'm not willing to pay it anymore. Who knows?
  11. When I tried to read it there was a pop up that blocked the article because it was "premium content"? Weird.
  12. You have to pay to view the article? Ummm, no.
  13. What is there to miss about obesity? Nothing. What is there to miss about behaviors that lead to obesity? That's a totally different story. My answer is: I miss quite a lot.
  14. Yes it is, and obviously MDs have noticed that they might be causing harm by providing that kind of counseling they're doing right now. Did you even read the whole article?
  15. You can use a soy protein isolate. I use Powerstar. Sweetened with stevia.
  16. Why not PM one of them if the question is that important? And may your question not be regarded as "dumb ass stupid" or something...
  17. Unfortunately you are right. And I can already see the "this board is so dead" comments popping up like crazy. Nobody forces anyone to read all threads and nobody forces anyone to answer any questions. Three sites of new posts this morning and I clicked maybe four or five topics. In fact I skip most of the threads because the titles simply don't seem interesting to me.
  18. In the end every board I've ever been on is like this. Boards are like this. It doesn't matter if it's a board about WLS, gardening, cats, dogs, whatever. Sometimes one needs to take a break or leave. Ideally without any overly dramatic good-bye-posts (yes, I can understand the need to read all the "Oh NOOOOOOOO, please don't leave!!!!!!!11" comments but that gets old as well).
  19. Pinned threads are not the worst idea. They give a quick overview over repetitive topics.
  20. @@Lindsey Skinner Abbott: It's still wait and see so far. Nobody wants to perform surgery without knowing all the facts. There will also be a ph-metrie (I'm sure of that) to find out if it's bile reflux or acid reflux. I guess another hospital stay (at least overnight) for diagnostics is in near sight. Blah.
  21. I take PPI and also Ursofalk (in case it's a mix of bile reflux and acid reflux). Haven't been bothered with volume reflux since the surgery so it's still way better than before. Yes, I had hernia repair but there's still the possibility of a recurrent hernia. That's why they want to take a look. Catastrophizing is awful and I'm really good at it. It took a while to calm myself down but it's still kind of nagging in the back of my brain. "What if there will still be reflux and then barrett's esophagus and worse?! What if I need another surgery to get an RNY anastomosis? And what if then there is still a problem?!" I guess you know what I'm getting at.
  22. Damn, I'm noticing some reflux again... By far not as bad as it was before surgery but still. I had my follow-up appointment on Monday and told the team. They said I should find out if the reflux is triggered by certain behavior since it's not bothering me every day (e. g. eating too late or certain foods) and then to make an appointment for a gastroscopy to take a look at things. Since I also had hernia repair there might be a problem with that again. I have to admit I'm quite a bit scared and I'm thinking about possible catastrophes a good deal since a few days. (Yes, admittedly I'm one of these people who can catastrophize things up to esophageal cancer.) Dammit...
  23. So lets assume it is the easy way out - who cares? Why make life harder than it has to be? Why not take the best chance to get to your goal? Wouldn't you be an idiot to not take your best bet? Hey, some people might like to take their dirty laundry to the river and slap it around on some stones to wash their clothes clean, doing it "the hard and natural way". I prefer a washing machine and dryer...
  24. I'm envious. I still feel pretty beaten after work and getting up in the morning is always a hassle.
