Some of you may remember that just 2 weeks after my sleeve surgery, my son was shockingly diagnosed with Stage IV Rectal Cancer with metastasis to his liver (5 liver tumors). My world shattered. I didn't eat. Didn't drink. Barely got out of bed and wasn't functioning in any normal capacity. I was just at the point where I was trying to learn how to be healthy with my new body and failed every single day. I received so many words of encouragement from this community, so much support and so many helpful suggestions/tips. And even when I'd sink in my chair, something someone said would remind me of what I needed to do - because I was no help to him if I couldn't help myself.
Jason's first liver surgery was last Monday. They removed 2 very invasive tumors from one lobe that were much deeper than the scans portrayed. Next month, three more liver tumors will be removed. The chemo has caused abscesses that resulted in his hospitalization for days at a time. It's caused mouth sores that make it impossible for him to eat. It's caused intolerability to the cold. And we're in the Northeast - where we've had a blizzard and too many other storms. Yet he continues to smile every day and encourage others who are fighting this awful battle to never give up.
Last week, while I stayed at the hospital with him, I brought my Protein Shakes. I reminded him to drink his Water and I did the same. I walked with him around the unit. I ordered eggs for Breakfast and chicken for lunch/dinner. I had chili for a snack. I felt like I was finally getting it. And was able to share my recovery and food tips with him.
And today, this happened, and the sparkle in my eye that has been absent and the smile on my face that left in November reappeared. (sorry the pic is upside down... )

My surgery is tomorrow morning and I am crazy nervous and excited at the same time! I am 5'5 214lbs so in the low bmi range with high cholesterol and mild sleep apnea. I was really afraid that my insurance would deny me because my bmi was at the lower end but I made it!!!!

Cold feet? It's nice and toasty here on the "Losers' Bench". We're here waiting for you. Since you're from NY, hell, I'll even rub your feet for you!!
It would be of some concern if you DIDN'T have some doubt and fear going into WLS. It is not just a diet. It is a life changer. We on this site will give you support, support and then some support. Talk to us. Read about us in "My story". Ask questions--no question is too silly, simple or non-important. If we don't know the answer, we can probably "round table" together with you to find it. Medical advise we should not give, but can point you to the right people who can.
Hang in there! You're almost to the starting gate!

I vividly remember the last day before starting my rigorous 1 month pre-surgery liver shrinking weight loss program. For lunch I went to Cici's pizza chowing down on the "all you can eat buffet, and for supper I showed up at Furr's Cafeteria and had their all you can eat buffet. I had a chicken fried steak, pan fries, coconut pie, jalapeno cornbread, mashed potatoes, and a diet coke . I went out with a bang. Now, 6 months later, most of that type of food doesn't even interest me. I don't miss it, but I'm glad I got it out of my system. I haven't had a carbonated drink since then either

I am an alcoholic in recovery and you are right, there is nothing "mild" about it. I am glad that I have a program behind me to hopefully help me with the adjustments after surgery.

    Mmmmmmm....I love dead animal flesh.
I eat high Protein, high fat, real foods. Nuts, cheese, veggies, meat, eggs, seafood.
Most fruit disagrees with me as do rice and potatoes. Carbs are pretty limited to Beans and an occasional dessert.
But dead animal flesh is my favorite. If it's red meat, rare...
Oh! Edit to add. Almost three years out and healthy as a horse.

I think nearly everyone who is a "regular" on the forum post-op goes through a period where they get sick of seeing the same posts over and over again. Either you get over it, become more patient, and try to help the newbies or you get fed up and spend less time on the forums. I know I had my own stretch of angst over so many repetitive topics. But I just try to remember we all started somewhere and I had my share of stupid and repetitive posts back in my early days. So I try to suck up the frustration and be as helpful as possible. If it weren't for people being patient with me in the beginning, I never would have gotten to where I am now.

I told my boss and coworkers but that is just cause I'm so excited! I don't care who knows or what they say cause I know I'm doing the right thing for me. That being said, I realize I am probably the minority here so I'd just do what the others suggested and just take a week of vacation. If you don't have vacation, maybe just take sick leave and say it's the flu? Haha. I've been sick for a week before! ????
