swinglifeaway got a reaction from Sammie1124 in New
You'll likely have an EKG to make sure your heart is healthy enough for surgery, and an endoscopy to make sure your throat/stomach are healthy with no issues to be treated before surgery, and maybe an ultrasound to check your gallbladder to make sure it looks healthy and there are no stones.

My doctor (Medical Director at my Center) wanted me to lose 9 pounds before sending me to the surgeon for a consultation. It is her preference for patients to lose a percentage of their excess weight pre-op. It wasn't an insurance requirement.

I was completely put out for both times. I would not have agreed to 'consciously sleep'. Knock me out lol!

Ha! You fought the Dr. while asleep. That's funny stuff!!
Strangely enough, my throat didn't become sore for several hours after I got home. I instantly noticed that my sinuses felt so dry and hurt. I guess from the oxygen?
Yeah! My sinuses were so dried out it felt really weird!

You'll be under "conscious sedation" not full on sedated. You may actually hear the docs and nurses talking but it won't make sense - you may feel like you're gonna gag yourself silly but you may not.
Some people come out of anesthetic faster than others or need more than others to be sedated but either way - it's so quick that they should be able to see what they need to see and do what they need to do in that very short time.
I have had a gastroscopy twice and one time I don't remember it but the doc afterwards told me that he didn't realize how strong I was and had to get reinforcements to hold me down to finish the procedure.
Then the next time I remember gagging so effing hard and the doc said that he's never seen someone gag so hard.
Lol
I was unconsciously trying to pull out the tube.
Thankfully he got the procedure done before I succeeded with that.
I've always been one that doesn't like anything attached to my face - severe anxiety so something attached to my face AND tubes going down my throat apparently brings out the hulk in me.
You'll feel totally fine afterwards ... maybe a tad of a sore throat if you fought it like I did hahahaha but that's it

It's so strange to think that when I first posted on this thread, I was just getting started with the process, and now I'm at the end. Surgery is next month!

I went in to my pre-op testing with the assumption I would expect to be there for four hours since that is what I was told to prepare for. I was in and out in less than an hour. They asked me lots of questions, pulled blood for testing, and that was it. I had already had an EKG during a pre-op visit two months prior, my sleep apnea was no longer an issue (I had lots of nose/throat surgeries for it), and I had already done an endoscopy six months prior because of some GI issues. The pre-op visit was easy-peasy. It really just depends on what your co-morbidities are and what tests they need to run.
Good luck!

I had my first appointment with the surgeon today and he is planning a Roux en Y bypass. I have an endoscopy scheduled for 5 July to check for a hiatus hernia which he is pretty sure i have, but wants to be sure so he can fix it at the same time. If all goes well I will have surgery mid July.
I have a few weeks before the endoscopy that I can fit nutritionist, psych and physician appointments into .. fingers crossed I can manage to get them all in that space of time to avoid longer waits.
I only need to do 3 weeks on VLCD but I am going to start mid June so that I won't have a hold up for the surgery if everything else is okay

Since I'm a cash patient and going to Mexico, I don't have any classes or evaluations to do. I will have access to their NUT for 2 yrs after surgery as well as the doctor to answer any concerns. Even though it takes a lot of time for ppl going through their insurance, feel blessed that you don't have to pay cash and go out of the country.

Prior to surgery, I had the signs of sleep apnea. I snored all night long and this kept my wife awake night after night. This went on for several years. So during my second round of pre-op testing I was required to be examined by a pulmonologist (as I recall). He concluded that I most likely had sleep apnea and recommended a sleep study. I declined because I knew the condition would likely improve after surgery. So I told him that if I still have the condition after surgery, I will undergo a sleep study tests. He was fine with that approach.
Shortly after surgery, my snoring came to an end. I would wake up in the middle of the night and find my wife hovering over me. I was sleeping so quietly, she thought I had died and she was trying to detect if I was still breathing.
So I think the answer is no unless you show signs of sleep apnea, such as snoring.

My doctor is a stickler about sleep apnea and requires a sleep study, and if you don't have your cpap with you the morning of surgery, he will cancel your surgery.
Prior to surgery, I had to have the sleep study test (which I failed and now Horton and I sleep together every night), blood draws, EKG, PFG, 3 NUT appointments, Physical Therapy evaluation, some kind of test for acid in my stomach, and then just a few days ago I had a Pre-op appointment which included another blood draw, another EKG, and a chest x-ray.
My surgery is on May 16th, less than a week away! OMG!

I had my very first consult today and we're debating on which to do! He wants to do an endoscopy to see how bad my esophagus is from acid reflux and that will tell wether I recieve the sleeve or bypass. I have a 3 month diet plan and have to lose 12lbs.
