Protein Shakes - Do I have to?

My concern is the NUT where I had my surgery says I have to consume protein through drinks. Now that I can tolerate the hot chocolate, I'm wondering if I have to add a couple of cups of hot chocolate a day? I would rather closely monitor my protein intake in foods and then add liquids to supplement my needs to get to a goal of 100g of protein daily. That will certainly motivate me to eat protein rich foods. Win/Win if you ask me.

Protein Shakes - Do I have to?

For breakfast yesterday, I drank the hot chocolate with protein peanut butter to equal 23 G protein, a couple of hours before lunch I ate 3 oz of Kroger's Carb Master yogurt to equal 3 protein, for lunch two slices (2 oz) of deli meat turkey breast with 1 tbs of sharp cheddar cheese, a total of 13 g protein, afternoon snack I had 1/2 cup of cottage cheese equaling 14 grams of protein, for dinner I had chicken breast (1.5 oz) and a slice of swiss cheese, a total of 18 G protein, before bed a had another hot chocolate for 23 g. Total of 94 g of protein. I put everything in my fitness pal.

Protein Shakes - Do I have to?

Hello everyone! Thanks for your responses. I've read them all and purchased and tried so many things this week. I'm still having so much trouble. I think the reason I can't drink the shakes is due to sensory issues with the texture. Other items I've tried this week haven't went so well either due to the after taste, etc. I did come up with a liquid concoction yesterday by taking hot chocolate with no sugar added and adding 6 tbs of the Peanut Butter powder from GNC. It's delicious! The peanut butter taste is there but not overwhelming. It's 23 grams of Protein per cup. I do have a question, why do I have to drink my protein? I've found the last day or two that I can get in 80-90 grams of protein daily by only eating protein rich foods. Thanks so much for your help!

    Sleeved on 9th November

I was sleeved on the 13th. I have a follow-up appointment with my surgeon Monday. It has been a very rough five days but today I am already feeling so much better! I am having a lot of trouble getting the protein shakes down and keeping them down. I don't do well with chalky type drinks. My gag reflex is awful with this type of texture. I switched over to ibuprofen yesterday and got off of the pain pills. I really think this is a big part of me feeling better. Pain pills upset my stomach even without major surgery on it. My doctor allows a list of about 8 foods this early - I tried cottage cheese and very wet shredded chicken yesterday and it went down well and didn't hurt. I had 1/2 cup of cottage cheese and about 4 bites of shredded chicken. I know it has only been six days but I haven't lost any weight yet. Anyone know possible reasons why? Just trying to connect with others who have recently been sleeved. If I can answer any questions about my experience let me know.
  10. Mine was the 13th. I'm not feeling well. Vomiting and weak.

Protein Shakes - Do I have to?

I'm not a coffee drinker. In fact, I'm not a milk drinker or milkshake drinker. I think that's the problem. It just gags me the whole time. It's more of a texture/sensory issue with the shakes. I'm going to try a couple of the suggestions with fruity liquids and unflavored protein powder added to crystal light. I wish there was a pill, or better yet, a patch where protein soaked into my body would be nice!

    One week post op

I feel your pain. I'm 5 days post op and the constant vomiting/upset stomach and weakness was not something I prepared for! If there was an undue button, I'd push it right now. I'm miserable! But like you, I'm on this site trying to find a way to see the positives. Hang in there. Soon this won't matter because we'll be healthy and not feeling the yuck we feel now!

How long did it take you to notice?

How much have you lost? I've heard that if you don't follow thru with the protein supplement of at least 70 a day, you'll lose muscle instead of fat and it won't show as much.

Is there really any protein powder that is unflavored that you've tried?

Protein Shakes - Do I have to?

Thanks! I haven't heard of the Isopure. I will check it out. I can keep crystal light and water down, It's just so difficult to get the protein shakes down and then when I do, I usually throw them up. I just changed my name, by the way! Just joined this evening.
