It's been 4 days post op. I'm finally going home and feeling much better. Thank you all for the support and prayers. It has been a rougher road for me but I survived and feel optimistic about everything going forward.

Do you have ShopRite grocery stores on LI? Im in NY about 3 hours away from LI. Some of our Shop Rites (the larger stores) have dietitians/nutritionists on site. I had one of my NUT visits at a local ShopRite. No co-pay the service is free & they emailed my visit info to my Dr's office.

It's like I wrote this!! I'm scared to death( no pun intended).
I go back and forth 1000 times a day. What if I get a blood clot, what if I die on the table.. Etc. I'm just starting also, I have about 5 more months of waiting to go which, like you said.. Is probably the worst part

I could have written this myself. I'm just starting the process and get anxiety thinking about it. What helps me is to focus on the future. I Pin cute clothes on Pinterest and hairstyles that I like. Anything to keep my mind occupied. I've spent hours googling horror stories, but in the end I have to focus on the future.

    Heyo folks.
I've been obese my whole life (40 years now), and finally made the decision to really do something about it this past spring. The funny thing is, I was scheduled to have the surgery on May 7th of 2001. I backed out because I was 25, arrogant and a know-it-all. I thought I could beat this thing myself. Well...I did beat it, and it beat me back 10 times since. This has been a decision I have been struggling with for the past 15 years. Now...I am well on my way to surgery. I'm a couple of weeks away from my final appointment and meeting my surgeon. Looks like my surgery is going to be the week of Christmas.
I'm scared of a few things:
    Death due to anesthesia.
    Death due to blood clotting.
    Death due to complications.
Thing is...I don't want to die, and that is why I am having this surgery. I want to extend what's left of my life. Would be nice to have grandchildren one day, watch my kids get married, grow old with the woman I love.
Just scared of not even getting out of the gate. It's keeping me up nights. I wake up and can't get back to sleep. It's a veritable hell I am going through on this. It's started to depress me and make me irritable. It's overwhelming fear sometimes. I've almost talked myself out of it. Sometimes I think the lengthy process makes you process too much at times. The time drawn out from classes, appointments and insurance approval almost makes you wait too long, and sit with your thoughts and anxieties. If it were August or September and you told me I was having my surgery tomorrow, I would jump with joy.
Has anyone else experienced this? How did you deal with it? Any pointers or suggestions?
    Thanks
    O

Your local hospital will have Registered Dieticians on staff who also see outpatients. My hospital has one who sees all their bariatric patients.

I don't know how standard it is these days, it seems that some groups have them and some don't. My doc's group didn't have one, as they provide that function on their own via their RN program director, surgeon and PA's transmitting their combined experience in the craft. I saw an RD associated with my PCP a couple of times, and she used the surgeon's guidelines to help me tailor a program around it that fit my needs.
You can usually find an RD (Nut) on staff at any hospital. The main thing to watch for with them is that frequently the primary bariatric experience they have is with the RNY, which is somewhat different from the sleeve in nutritional requirements (RNY patients are often given more calories per day to account for their malabsorption that sleevers don't have, which can lead to slower or inadequate weight loss). If your surgeon has guidelines (they usually have some kind of booklet of instructions published), take that along when you see the RD.

I saw my dietitian two months before I could get in to see the surgeon. I was told those two visits counted.
Regain is my biggest worry and definitely one reason why I chose surgery. I know people do gain weight back, but I am hoping that the tool the surgery gives me will make it easier for me to maintain my weight. The req. psych eval also had him refer me to another therapist to "explore" my "issues" with food. That's shrink speak for "figure out why you got this way." I'm on board with that, because I think it will help me in the long run.
I wish I had done this back when I was your age and not waited 30 years. Have you (or the doctor's office) checked your insurance to see if you're covered and what hoops it expects you to jump?

I'm not as worried for my neck, as I am my whole face...my friend tells me all day.. I don't understand how you have no wrinkles at all.. I attribute it to my Water intake, plus my fat in the face????... But I'm afraid after the surgery in going to look older, I'm 35 but people ask me if I'm in my twenties.. ????

My surgeon told me he is doing mine just before the sleeve surgery. Has anyone had it done then? What are they looking for? What happens if they find something will the sleeve be canceled? I see my surgeon for the last of 6 visits this Monday. Maybe I should ask him for more info but I thought I would ask you all first.

My surgeon is doing mine the day before my surgery, I'm very glad to hear I won't be awake for it! I was/am very nervous about it. I hope they always knock people out for it now rather than have me awake...
@@ssflbelle I would guess they're looking to make sure you don;t have anything in your stomach/digestive tract that would cause problems on surgery day or otherwise make you unsuitable to be operated on. If they find something, better for them to know then to not. It may lead to surgery being canceled (as could unusual results in any pre-op test), but better that then an emergency situation on the day.

It was a complete non-event for me.
I'd schedule mine for the first available slot....6:00am. Exactly one week prior to the surgery date.
Wife drove us there and I was suited up in my ridiculous looking hospital gown and grippy socks in no time.....in the hospital bed.....and being wheeled into the room in short order. IV went in easily because I'd been staying very well hydrated.
Bright lights.....several medical staff members suited up.....very much reminiscent of an operating room.
They turned me over on my left side and slightly elevated. Was a bit awkward due to ongoing back trouble (much better now after my sleeve surgery).
A sweet little lady (looked EXACTLY like the medium from The Poltergeist )......came in real close and put a fixture in my mouth and ensure it was comfortable.
She then placed a mask over my nose & mouth and ask me to take several deep breaths.....very calming. Instantly relaxed and at peace with everything.
They explained that the next step was going to be a sedative administered via my IV and for me to continue breathing nice and deep and enjoy my great nap that would take place.
    That was it.
    Over.
I woke up in the room I'd started off in. Head was clear. Body was relaxed. No hangover. There had never been any pain whatsoever.
My surgeon (he'd done the endoscopy, too) came in and explained what he'd seen and that everything was a go for sleeve surgery in a few days.
    I felt great.
    Wife drove me home.
I did sleep great for a few hours in my recliner and woke up feeling better than I have in ages.
Heck.....I'd go back today and do another endoscopy if they'd let me. Best sleep ever.
Enjoy yourself and relax. It'll all go well.
    It's a big non-event.
Same thing can be said about the sleeve surgery, too. Nothing to it but to do it.

Cilepepp4...your weight along the way doesn't penalize you. You meet all of the criteria initially. That is what they go by for your surgery. If you lose weight during those 6 months, you still qualify. ....***btw, this is my 1st post-op posting! I'm in bed, barely 16 hours post- op--- my surgery went great. I was up walking last night & overall, pain has never gotten past a 5 on a 0-10 scale. Deep breath.. UHC will take care of you.
    Post OP posting. Lol
