Can you cite some research to back up what you say? Additionally I was not aware morbidly obese people has special personal trainers, what makes them different from a regular personal trainer? Any good trainer should be able to work with people of any size. I think people are getting annoyed with your statements because what your saying isn't supported with proof. I think the idea here is any movement is good movement and its critical people do exercises that don't cause Injury and they are comfortable with.

We're not holding hands here. I don't sugar coat things. I am a straight shooter. Your statement as well as the Dr's original statement are both false. You will lose weight with water exercises, and a lot of it too. The key to any exercise regime is to mix it up by doing different exercises. Losing weight though is not just about the exercise only, it's about what's going in your mouth.
To suggest you cannot lose substantial weight with water aerobics alone again is FALSE. Many others, along with myself have lost a generous amount of weight in a short window just with water exercises. Hell most of my pre-VSG weight loss has been done in the pool.
You can believe what you want, that is your right, but you're wrong.

Go to a Water aerobics class and see just how exhausting it can be. It's easy to get a great workout in the Water.< /p>

@@PissiChrissi just can't resist asking have you ever been to an aqua aerobics class that uses free weights, aqua gloves and legs weights? Where are you getting your information that Water aerobics is a waste of time?

Your surgeon just needs to watch his back. I have a super soaker and I'm not afraid to use it!

    Adding:
I used to love it at the Y when runners would grudgingly come to our Water aerobics class because an injury kept them from running. It usually took less than 15 minutes to realize that Water exercise is intense. It was also great to see the 90 year old ladies KICK THEIR BUTTS.
P.S., had your surgeon never seen Michael Phelps' body?

Wow, what an idiot. Something tells me he has never taken a water class.
I have lost over 200 pounds so far and 99% of my exercise is in the water.

Wow your surgeon sounds like he needs a lesson or two in what is good exercise for someone who is 130 pounds overweight. You can help him learn by printing this article http://www.womenshealthmag.com/fitness/swim-workout-0
I swim at least 2 days a week and I also ride an adult tricycle about 4 to 7 miles 5 days a week. I can't walk without 2 canes or a walker and most of the time use an electric mobility, but I sure can bike and swim and love doing it. Forget the running and lifting weights for now and do something that is good for you and easier on your joints. Believe me I know.

He has the typical "I'm a SURGEON therefore I am God" complex (usually worse in orthopedics). . So take his advice with a grain of salt. Water exercise is difficult - and what is recommended for people with joint issues. And any exercise is better than none!

I have lost 100 pounds. I had VSG surgery nearly 21 months ago at age 68. I reached my weight loss goal (150 pounds) and then went on to lose another 15 pounds in the next 8 months. I've been maintaining at 135 pounds for nearly half a year now.
And my knee pain (arthritis and pain from various athletic injuries over the years) didn't completely go away until I lost those last 15 pounds.
And running (?!) when you're 130 pounds overweight is f**king nutty advice.
@@Inner Surfer Girl here has lost several hundred pounds and still has more to go. She (and others here) focused early on via Water exercises for obvious reasons.
There's another aspect to this, which is that exercise is necessary for health. You can't get around that. And you have to figure out something you can do that WILL exercise / challenge your body.
However ... you will ultimately lose all the weight you need to lose if (and only if) you eat the right foods and right amount of food that promotes the weight loss. There's a saying that goes (something) like this: You will lose your weight in the kitchen, not in the gym.
Finally, here is my #1 exercise rule: "Don't hurt yourself!"
I know you don't care for your surgeon and that you're limited to him due to your insurance situation and can't change surgeons. I understand that you trust his surgical abilities and plan to put up with him to get your surgery, but that you're (my language, not yours) considering a wider array of post-op advices to maximize your long-term WLS success.
I'd say to just nod carefully at his advices about exercise, continue to gather information, and make your own decisions.
And for the record, if I were 130 pounds overweight with severe pain in my feet no way in hell would I take up long-distance walking or any kind of running. That may (or may not) come later. I would sure hope you could walk a lot more easily and longer and faster down the line. But not now.

well first of all your doctor sounds like a jack ass. that being said. you do YOU. i know people who have lost without exercise and at least you're willing to be active in whatever way you can! that's super important! i haven't lost 130lbs but i've lost 80lbs (sleeved 7 months ago). i do run and lift weights but when i first started i was 240lbs and all i could do was walk. do what you can when you can and increase as you can. hopefully you can see someone else for post op visits! we got your back here. xo

I'm 55 and waiting to go over test results with my surgeon in about a week. I am hoping it will help me decide between sleeve or bypass. I have met all of my insurance requirements so just need to submit request and schedule surgery once I'm approved. I'm guessing I will have surgery in late May.

I am 56 and saw my surgeon for the first time yesterday. I need an endoscopy first because of GERD & Hiatus hernia. If all goes well then hopefully will have RNY late July.
The main reason for choosing WLS is because I need knee replacements in both knees and the surgeons told me I have to lose weight before they will do the surgery. I am also hoping that losing some weight will help my back pain which only started when I got over 90kg.
I am a bit worried about saggy skin, but I figure I can hide it under my clothes, it's not like I want to impress anyone, I just want to be more comfortable in myself.

I constantly run into Sleevers in their 50s and 60s but I would love to get to know some of you who are bypassers. Seems our life experiences and potential difficulties may make us good support for each other! (You know, little things like menopause, arthritis, etc...). Please come out of "hiding" and gather here. I need to see yall in action! And would love to support you as well!
