  1. @@lachellove, thanks Lachelle.

Quick update: Budget submitted, so I should have a more thorough update sometime tomorrow. In short:

The Cartographer and I are still getting on as friends, so far so good?

The Actress ROCKS, is currently committed to at least 2 years without a romance and it's lovely to have another friend in my life.

On Sunday my friend The Gourmand and I will be making hundreds of sushi (maki, nigiri, gunkan, and sashimi) in a dry run of our work for AllRecipes. Should be a great time!

Okay, nevermind, this is the longform update:

This last week we had a real estate agent friend out to advise us on how to go about converting the house to a duplex by adding a central interior wall (cost estimate, impact on resale, etc etc). Long story short, her advice was DO NOT DO IT! We've got (apparently) somewhere between $200k and $250k in equity in the house (hooray for buying in late 2011 and it being an election year approaching summer) and, in her work over the last 30 years, she's helped a number of clients (which we are not) through similar divorces (one spouse realizes they are gay and it's amicable) and only once has living on the same property survived beyond the acquisition of a new partner.

Additionally, the preschools and elementary schools that provide appropriate services for Little Smye are all out of the district we live in now. Her advice is: Sell the house this summer, use the profits to 1) give Mrs. Smye a large chunk of $ to survive on while she sets up her practice/downpayment on a small house for her/Little Smye 2) give myself a smaller chunk (only $80k) to completely zero out all student loans 3) reduce myself spousal support by way of the larger share of profits going to Mrs. Smye at the outset 4) Provide myself a larger portion of his income to be able to rent for a short while near to work and build a stockpile to buy again when the market next drops 5) provide Little Smye a stable, single move, landing in a near-forever home.

It's utterly heartbreaking, but admittedly seems to be the most reasonable solution. I don't want to give up my home, but I can't afford to support my own mortgage, a household for Mrs. Smye once she moves out, AND make my student loan payments. And if Mrs. Smye is going to move westward towards better schools for Little Smye , I want to be near to them.

My biggest anxiety (other than losing my wife [oh wait, that's already done] and not living with my son most of the time [in his best interest based on the careers of his parents]) is the financial aspect of all of this. Mrs. Smye took a low paying job and I acquired $80k in student loans in order to maximize our family's long-term earning potential, but with the divorce it leaves us both effectively screwed... except that we've got such equity in the house that we can effectively solve both problems (giving her enough of a cushion to live off of until she finishes her licensure and eliminating all of my student debt).

We've not made any decisions at this point, but it's looking like we'll likely aim for a deal to be reached mid-end of spring with closing in early July (I have July off, which would allow for crashing on Mrs. Smye's couch while I hunt for a new home once we have her securely placed). We'll also likely stay married until after the house is sold as there are no capital gains taxes on up to $500k if we're married, but $250k if we're divorced. We'll then see about doing one of those 'self-guided divorce' deals for $800 rather than the $8-20k attorney-guided divorces.

Oh my. What a update. Taking a deal that benefits you both seems like the right thing to do. I know you guys will make a decision that is best for or all of you. This has to be a lot to take on right now. Glad everything is working out with you and the cartographer are doing well. I commend the actress for being on a romance hiatus.. That is a very wise thing to do. It will help in the long run. The divorce is coming. Seems surreal.

  2. I am now waiting for ins. Approval. I have a question though... When I get out of the hospital I'll have my 2year old and 6 year old to care for alone while my husband is at work. Any suggestions? My son-the 2 yo- climbs on me, he's very clingy, any ideas what to do? (We just moved here and we don't know anyone).

Not to sure my girls are older.. Especially one that's clingy. Will your husband be able to take some time off? At least for the first 4 days? I healed rapidlyso I was up and around after at least 4 days.

  3. I have to admit I still have shakes and Protein bars and I've been at goal for over a year. My nutritionist and surgeon are ok with it. shakes don't hold me over as long as a bar does but I like to mix it up from day to day. I just ordered some combat crunch bars from Amazon prime. I never liked the Quest ones. You have to find what works for you long term. This isn't a diet for one year. It's a life style and if your not into cooking and making everything from scratch and have a sweet tooth like me this has helped me stay at goal.

    Good luck-

I was look on Amazon ,GNC has them by the bar. But yes I have to consider what works for me although I haven't gained I still would like to get my Protein in. Seems like I can implement them in my diet somewhere it couldn't hurt.

The whole process will be a lot of trial and error in the first year or so. The guidelines from nutritionists and usrgeons are a great start and very important while you are still healing. But you ultimately have to figure out what will work for you long term and how you can live the rest of your life. I think the goal to get more protein in, by whatever means, is a noble one. Even with all the variation in programs and advice, I think one thing we can almost all agree on is that protein is key to long term success!

Yes, that is so true. I have to fine a routine and do what's best for me in the end.

  4. Welcome!! Good to hear that you are complication free. Yes, that's happen to me to I was up and down, one minute I was energetic the next I was so tired. That won't change for awhile. I'm doing good, I'm 7 months out. And the biggest hurdle for me avoiding grazing. I've managed to do it on most days but some days I feel like I don't get enough Protein. I'm at a set number and trying to maintain sometimes I'm at the number then I might go under its a bounce between a few pounds. I didn't have a purée diet just the liquid. Also exercise is easier now I just have to eat more calories something I never thought I would say!!

  5. How are you gals. Blessed I'm sure!!!! How has surgery or the road to getting surgery been??? I pray all is well. I'm here if anyone needs to talk.

I am new to this forum. I am 11 days post-op and I had my surgery at a Christian health center. I could tell how huge of a difference it made in giving me the support I desired in starting this journey. I hope to become even more grounded in my faith as I move forward. I am grateful for groups like this!!!
Hello, welcome! How are you healing. I too am on a spiritual journey. Strengthening my faith ultimate goal. I created this thread awhile ago when I first started my journey. I love my sleeve it has been my headache and my joy!!! God placed me right where he needed me to be. Are you still on liquids? What's state are you in?

I am healing fine. I am just started back working this week, so that has been an adjustment. I am also trying to incorporate more exercise. I feel good physically about every other day, then on the opposite days I'm tired. I am in Indiana and I'm currently on the 8 week Puree phase ( I didn't have a liquid phase like others do). How about you? How far post-op are you? What's been the biggest hurdle for you thus far?

  6. @@lachellove Oddly enough, they haven't given me one yet. I did mess around with a website calculation that said I should expect to be around 197 but that's a little too close to the 200 lb mark for me so I believe God for more. Although I don't have that a number, I want nothing to do with being over 200 lbs. I know I'll really feel good once I can break past that number. I've been overweight since I was 8 years old and at 200 lb by the time I reached 8th grade. That's one wall I have to break down!

Yea I haven't been under 200 in a long time. It's been a long battle with my weight, I feel like I'm finally winning!

  7. @@lachellove, thank you for checking in. That small gesture of support means the world. In brief - yes I am well. The Cartographer and I continue to be in contact with strict parameters, the Actress and I are spending time together as friends and I am on something of a dating hiatus. I'll be posting a more thorough update once I get this budget submitted to the board - yay for having a real job alongside everything else :)

Glad to hear everything is calm! Yes a nice healthy break from dating seems refreshing no stress just fun. Yay! Real jobs rock. Keeps you busy ..

  9. @@lachellove I don't have a magic number per say. I just want to be healthy, happy, and comfortable in my skin. All I know for sure is I don't want to be over 300 lbs anymore or even 200 lbs for that matter!

That's great. Keep me posted on your progress. I'm about 7 months out.. It has been great. My doctor gave me a goal which I didn't mind .. It didn't mean much long as I wasn't gaining.

  10. Hello all. I would love to join you! My surgery is scheduled on April 18th. I'm excited but can't say my mind doesn't wonder "will I do this right? Will I succeed"?

Hello welcome!!! Yes we have all been there. But we have all succeeded .. So will you! It's the most hardest yet rewarding thing I've ever done. You just have to make the right choices and when you do mess up know that's there's always a tomorrow! A new day to get back up and try again. You can do this!! What's you goal weight?

  12. I've really had great results with Quest Protein bars. Apple Pie is my favorite. 20 grams of Protein and 17grams of Fiber (macros for some of their bars) works well for me as Breakfast during my morning commute to work.

I'm also a fan of the Quest Protein chips. I'll enjoy them with salsa or guacamole as a meal, too.

I haven't tried the protein chips I saw them though at GNC.. Might have to try.

  13. Why can't you just eat more meat or fish to meet your goals?

I have them for an occasional treat and I keep one in my purse for emergencies but Protein bars are an extremely fake and processed food. Real food is better.

Eatmeguiltfree.com brownies are less processed than Protein Bars. They don't taste like brownies but they taste really good.

I do but even still I can only ever get to 65 at the most. Just want to have one for Breakfast or on the go. I will try them too.. Thanks!!!
