I am glad I'm able to do simple things like mopping the floor and going shopping without sitting down and taking breaks because of my back pain. Now I can walk for miles at one time without sitting down!

animallover1247 reacted to Inner Surfer Girl in When Is Weight Loss Surgery the Wrong Choice?
It sounds like she truly believed the surgery would "solve all her problems".
The results of immaturity, abuse, trauma, addiction, and mental illness is not going be "solved" by anything let alone weight loss surgery.
Without surgery she would have certainly continued to abuse food and still may have turned to alcohol, drugs, and sex anyway.
Blaming the surgery for her issues doesn't sound very healthy to me. What would her life been like without it? You can't compare apples to oranges.
If she was unwilling to seek counseling before bariatric surgery should she have been denied? I don't know. A lot of folks of all ages go into this process blindly. Some actually learn and grow through the process. Some do not. Some people have the capacity for personal growth. Some do not.
If she was a poor candidate for WLS she still might have been able to learn from the experience.
If she had been a great candidate for surgery, she still might have wound up where she is today.
I just don't think there is necessarily cause and effect at work here.
This is much more complex than she or the article seem to acknowledge.
Yes, I think there needs to be many more mental health resources both pre- and post-op for anyone who is obese.
There certainly are not enough affordable mental health resources in the US period.

animallover1247 reacted to JamieLogical in Proof I Did It!
I finished my half marathon this morning! Not only did I survive, but I finished over a minute faster than I'd trained for. My goal was to finish in under three hours. My training pace would have me finishing in about 2:45, but I finished in 2:43:44, which is especially impressive when you factor in that it took me about three minutes just to get up to the start line once the horn blew, because it was so crammed with people and I didn't even have room to start running until I was a good 25 yards past the start line. So here's all the proof you've been waiting for:

Right before the start... it was only 35 degrees out, so I wore the jacket until the last possible second, then handed it off to my husband.

"Running" down the chute to the finish line. I was barely moving at this point....

    Almost there....

    I made it!!!

Happy, despite being near death. Showing off my metal and the flowers my sister-in-law brought me.

At lunch with my husband and some friends after I survived the race. Wearing my race shirt and showing off my metal again.
Here's a link to a little video of the start and finish:

animallover1247 reacted to LipstickLady in Not telling people about your surgery is a "half truth" or a "lie" steams me like a pile of fresh cow dung...
I'm not sure when making the personal decision to not tell the world all of your personal business became a "half truth" or "lie by omission" but if that's the case, I have a few scenerios/questions for those of you who think that way.
    By that logic:

If someone asks me how me and husband are the day after a huge fight (or a night of great sex), is it my duty to tell them all the details or is my standard answer of "Great!" or "Fine!" now a lie?

If someone asks me why I look tired, do I have to tell them that my husband snored and farted all night/was extremely frisky/kept getting up to pee and woke me up a gazillion times or am I lying?

I am just getting over a horrible tummy bug. When people ask me if I'm feeling better, should I go ahead and tell them that I am terribly afraid that I am going to poop in my pants at any minute because my stomach still feels off? If I don't, I am TOTALLY lying by omission.

Well meaning friends often ask how my kids are doing in school. Should I tell them that my oldest is in the top ten in her class, got into a top rated university, has received an a$$ load of scholarships but that her ex-boyfriend is being a real bast@rd and making her personal life a little miserable? I mean, that's the truth.

People often ask me my ethnicity because I am olive complected in the bible belt. I tell them Mexican and Italian, but I leave out the drop of German and Acatec Indian. Pin a big red L on my chest!

Must I tell people that I am on the rag/pissed at my kids/need a glass of wine/really have no desire to talk to them/in a hurry when they ask me how I am doing? Manners be damned! I don't want to be a liar.

Do I love your skirt? Why yes, I do! But now I have to tell you that it's beautiful but looks like **** on you because I don't want to omit any info.

Why am I smiling? I just crop dusted some nasty faced woman an aisle over. TRUTH!!

I could go on forever ...

Keeping my personal business PERSONAL doesn't make ME a liar just because you choose to share YOUR personal business.

Just had the same problem two days ago. My coworker told me I only need to lose a little more weight in my stomach. That would be fine if "a little more weight" is over 100 lbs! She told me if I lost over 100 lbs, I would not look good. I told her me losing the weight was about not having to deal with diabetes, high blood pressure and sleep apnea any longer. It's funny how you can have comments like this but at the same time people discriminate against you and treat you different becasue you are obese.

The problem with news media articles like this is they cite one study - and don't provide a link to the actual study. I'm not stopping my PPI yet. And one study does not a conclusion prove - only a suggestion.
And the biggest takeway from grad school statistics: "correlation does not equal causation".

Well this morning there was yet another report on PPI's. This report was on "The Today Show" on NBC. It stated using PPI's long term can cause kidney problems and therefore "SHOULD BE AVOIDED." I have been on a PPI for 15 plus years and I don't have any issues with my kidney. Even so I will take the risk because I am not going to be in pain more than I am over chronic heartburn.

I get it. Being morbidly obese, I struggled with self esteem issues like many others. When I was about 50 lbs less than my highest weight all I heard was "you're not that big." I appreciated the compliments but did not accept them because how can someone who is 100+ pounds overweight not be "not that big?"
Just yesterday at work my co-worker said I only have a little more weight left in my stomach to lose. Really? I have a little over 100 pounds to lose. I told her this and she said you will not look good if you lose over 100 lbs! I told her losing the weight was about getting rid of my diabetes, HBP and sleep apnea.

No, I never thought that for one second. I knew it couldn't do it on my own because if I could have, I would have done it in the 20 years I have been overweight. Statistically speaking morbidly obese people have less than a 5% chance of getting the weight off and keeping it off.

Congratulations! This is a great milestone.
Just an observation and something to think about: if 30 pounds is more than you have been able to lose in the past and the fact that you are now one month post-op, don't be upset when you stall. You will stall, and especially if you weigh every day, you may have an emotional reaction to that stall.
I have learned that how I respond to the inevitable stalls is one of the major things that makes my post-op weight loss successful post-op. Pre-op, a stall is when I would give up.
Keep up the great work and keep following your program.
    Embrace the Stall!
