I understand. I'm 61, work full time and have spinal stenosis, bulging disks and bad knees. It's really hard to feel like exercising after a 12 hour shift which is what I work. My back is usually killing me by then. I do walk a lot most nights at work. I bought a pedometer and found that I average 3-4 miles a night when working. I just have to call it good at that. On my off days i try to get out and walk a couple if miles knees and back permitting. I tried Water aerobics...can't do them, too much twisting and bending for my spinal stenosis. Better for the knees though.

My pouch is frustrating as well. My guess would be the protein bar. I used to eat them and then got to where they just didn't agree with the pouch. My pouch sort of runs my life now. I saw my surgeon on Thursday and talked or him about how nauseated I've been and how I've had about two weeks where I can barely eat any protein, I have to drink it. He said it didn't sound alarming and to talk to their nutritionist about dropping back to stage 2 of eating plan. So, I've been drinking lots of Isopure Protein Drinks. I've also become very sensitive to milk products which really bothers me because I had been eating cottage cheese every single day, but now it upsets my stomach. I don't have any answers, unfortunately, just know you aren't alone.

I'm glad the recovery time improves over time, but I'm not happy to hear that even you--people who are quite a ways past surgery--still have this happen. This is definitely a huge lifestyle change. People need to realize that presurgery. Although there are so many benefits...i guess it's just something that must be expected, and patiently endured.

I totally understand your concerns about trying new things and your desires to add new things to the bland diet. Congrats on your success thus far and I certainly hope you're able to conquer the leg cramps--they're no fun.

@@bugsy72 Wow...you're able to eat bananas a month out from your surgery and its dietician approved? Enjoy! My Doc and Dietician only gives the green light on berries from the fruit category and only after their patients have lost 75% of their weight...they really prefer for us to be in the maintenance phase before adding fruits and a few other items.

I still have the occasional experience like this. It happened last night for me with some delicious baked chicken and a garden salad.
I am not certain why it happens but occasionally foods that you eat regularly may bother you for a few hours. I do hate when it happens because I then feel like I did not get enough good Protein in.
I don't have dumping, I just get that blocked feeling with a bit of nausea mixed in and as you said even Water doesn't work for a while.
I will say that I noticed the recovery time improves over time.

I'm nine weeks out and have no regrets about having gastric bypass. I'm down 46 pounds. yay! But I'm getting tired of having to always wonder if i can eat something or if i'm eating too much or if I'm eating too fast. I hate the feeling I get when my stomach doesn't like a food, and actually, I haven't even ventured out very far yet from yogurt, Soup, Protein Shakes, you know; the 'slider' foods.
This morning i had Cream of Wheat. With plenty of fairlife milk so it was creamy. I didn't eat much, perhaps 1/4-1/3 cup. So I don't think i overate. I had no desire or room to add fruit as my nutritionist suggests. I waited an hour to two hours and tried to drink some Water and my stomach wants nothing to do with it. I thought i was going to throw up but it seems to have calmed down now. But my stomach feels uncomfortable...so i am not feeling good right now.
Ugh. i hate this part of the journey! I've had cream of wheat several times before. I don't remember it being a problem.
Your comments? I feel like I can't even take my Vitamins right now.

"I feel skinnyyyyyy, oh so skinnyyyyy....."
So this happened. I'm back to my lowest post op weight today. Yay. This is big. I've been bouncing into and out of Onederland for SIX months. A month and a half ago I made some big changes to my food and behaviors. It resulted in the loss of ten pounds I gained back from my low weight last year up to that point.
So today I'm back down to 193, back on track, and feeling great. Less than fifty pounds to goal.
I started thinking I'd make a list of what's going right. When I can't figure out why things are slowing down or going in reverse, I'll pull out this list and see what I'm doing or not doing. Here goes. Feel free to add your own tips to this thread.
    Tracking food in MyFitnessPal.
    Weighing daily.
Going to OA and CODA meetings.
    Therapy every two weeks.
Planning food the day before and committing it to my OA sponsor.
Staying under 1200 calories a day.
    No fried food.
    No carby Thai noodles.
    No movie crapcorn.
Two fruit or p rotein shake s nacks a day.
Measuring out nuts instead of guessing the portion.
    No alcohol.
Healthy, boring, simple foods like eggs and cheese and yogurt and meatballs.
    Way fewer processed foods.
    Bye bye bread.
Just because I drop it in the salad bowl doesn't make it salad. Log it. (See nuts, measured, above.)
    Journaling.
Listening to weight loss and addiction recovery podcasts.
Obeying my band. It says "enough"? I stop.
I have found that this same fill level that I have been at since August suddenly is just right. Before these changes, I was contemplating another fill because I was able to eat too much. But even then I would get stuck on certain foods if not chewed thoroughly. I wisely took my NP's advice and cleaned up the food and drink before getting a ninth fill. I don't need it now. I'm at the sweet spot, the green zone, the holy grail of band land.
It took about four weeks for me to stop daydreaming about the perfect meal and missing my fried foods. Today I crave veggies and simple meals. It's a miracle. But I can't stress enough how important the "head and heart" work is. I am working very, very hard on the emotional and spiritual recovery from my food addiction. Like every day. No kidding.
So anyway, just wanted to share this joyful stuff and ask others to pile on. What's going right for you?

Welcome Loraine, just stick to the doctors guidance, careful with wanting to heal rapidly, the process is sometimes super good days and some not so good, hang in there it does pay off.

    hello fellow RNY folks.
Well, today is my six week surgiversary. I'm doing well, feeling great, trying to figure out the learning curve with what food, how much food, etc. But all in all, things are going well.
Except for exercise. I am 61, still weigh 259, and hate it. I have a treadmill and just forced myself to walk 3/4 of a mile in 24 minutes (=slow). I really dread it and am worried about my continued success if i don't exercise much. Are there some of you out there who have had extended success with just the food portion and not the exercise part?
My bariatric center even gives me a year free membership at their fitness club but i have no desire to go there. Even a meeting with a personal trainer. They have a pool so i COULD do the aquacise thing (I used to do that many years ago) but where will i get the ambition to get dressed, in this 5 degree weather, and drive 25 minutes to the gym and then do it, and reverse it all?
I'm sorry I'm having such a pity party. Just feeling down today about it.

I'm in the same boat as I don't fee the typical "full stomach." This is normal and why it's important to stick to your portion sizes for the stage diet stage you are on. The hunger hormone ghrelin returns to normal regulation of hungar signals to the brain after a few months.

Get in the pool. You will love it. I know I do. If it weren't for the pool I wouldn't get much exercise at all. I can do things in the Water that I could never do on land.
    It is so worth it.

Exercise is a part of the weight loss journey. It sucks, but is a necessity to improve life style. There are plenty of workouts you can do at home. There are also home workouts with tools like resistance bands, kettle bells, etc.
One of the programs I've come across is Exercise Launchpad on Youtube. This is geared towards obese and limited mobility patients.

I'm 61 and had RNY on Dec 1. I'm feeling great--it's only been 12 days. I lost 22 pounds so far with pre-diet and post surgery loss. Woohooo! I also have 3 grandkids and want to be around for them. I also have a disabled adult daughter and NEED to be around a long time to help her as well. Lots of reasons. I have no regrets with the surgery yet. I hope I don't ever have regrets!

It's been a long time in posting anything. Had my by pass 6/21/15, the by pass itself was successful, but ran into problems. My colon was stapled and I ended up in the hospital for 21 days. Now,6 months away and I feel terrific. I ended up with snowstorms bag for 4 months as my colon healed. Total of 36 days in the hospital from 3 different surgerys. Would I do it again, yes in a minute. I've had surgery to remove the bag and retook up my insides and feel wonderful. Am inFlorida now recoooperating. I walk 3 - 5 miles a day and have no regrets!
