That's a lot of judgment passed on people who are judging.

The reasons often cited for WLS patients initially having that reaction to seeing others who are morbidly obese is that they're fearful (terrified, actually) of regaining their weight and returning to the hell on earth that their own obesity felt like for them.
Experiencing weight loss surgery from pre-op to maintenance years later is full of a lot of changes in attitudes, opinions, perspectives, etc. I expect your surgery buddy (and you) will go through many such changes.
For example, just five minutes ago I said to my husband, "It's so weird! When I first weighed 135 pounds (having lost 100 pounds) I thought I looked anorexic. Now (many months later) I don't think that at all -- now, I just look normal."
Lotsa attitudinal changes on this journey. Lotsa changes! I don't know if they will ever end.

Cigna finally approved my procedure for Tuesday!!! I'm so excited and nervous! My representative at the surgeons office said that the Dr to Dr review didn't even happen she got everything all ironed out herself before! So excited and now sooooo nervous!

I am Feb 22nd

We are all having surgery the same day!!!! Started pre op today. ????!

My surgery is scheduled for Feb 22, 2016. So excited!

Like some of the women, I struggled with "to have surgery or to not have surgery." I have been contemplating surgery for over 10 years, probably close to. Do I think this will be a magical cure to my obesity? No. Do I think that my food cravings will go away? Possibly. Is this going to be an easy fix? Heck no it's not! I know that I didn't gain all this weight over night and it sure isn't going to come off over night. I truly believe that through God, prayer, and an amazing support system, I will be able to do great at this. Do I think I will be a size 2? No. Heck, I'd be happy at a size 14/16. If you go into this thinking you will be able to eat everything as before, just smaller portions, you are potentially setting yourself up for failure. I know that I won't be able to eat 1/2 of the food I currently fix. Not all the food I fix is unhealthy, my problem is Portion Control.
I agree it is all how you set your mind to it. Yes, I may have a set back here or there, but you know what? I'm human. The next day is a new day and I will try again. We will all do great. We can't allow ourselves to think anything less.

Well, I got a call yesterday that my surgery date needs to change. They moved it to the next day, March 1. That really just makes it seem like it's further away, especially since we aren't even in Feb yet!
Did anyone watch the All of me video? It wasn't entirely what I was expecting. But it did show the down side of not trying and the good side of if you do what you are suppose to do and work at it, how this is just a tool to put you on the right path.

I second what you are saying here!!! too suffer from binge eating disorder, as well as alcoholism. I'm scheduled to be sleeved in February. I went through intensive outpatient therapy later last year as I got closer to being cleared for surgery for exactly this reason. Dysfunctional eating will not be cured by getting this surgery. You need help. You've been given a physical tool, but you haven't been given the mental tools and resources to learn how to cope with the urges and the emotional eating that you have used in your life. I just want you to know you are not alone. This is not your fault. You sound like you're beating yourself up. This is a genuine disorder. You need help. What's great is once you get the emotional support you need, you have a fantastic tool in hand, or in abdomen ????, to help carry you through to your physical goals. I wish you all the luck. I don't know where you're located but if you look for eating disorder programs there are a few around the country. Best of luck. You aren't alone. And this isn't your fault.

I personally suffer from a binge eating disorder, so I very actively work with an eating disorder program while I am on this journey. It is very worth looking into why you are eating what you are eating. Good luck!
