her1981 reacted to OutsideMatchInside in 4th WLS procedure coming up this week!!! No judgement!
@sydneyjonno
I'm not judging, you but what is going to be different after this surgery? Do you have a therapist to talk to about your eating? Do you have your metabolism and body composition tested?
You realize even with your over stitch, eventually you will be able to eat more. What is going to stop you from eating more?
Portion Control is supposed to come with weighing and portioning your food before you eat it, not your surgery. I will never know if I can eat 2 cups of food simple because I never put 2 cups of food in front of myself. I eat my doctor recommended portions, 4 to 6 ounces of dense Protein.
You still have to use will power after surgery. You will always be able to graze, nothing is going to stop you from grazing (that is what eating 30 minutes after you have previously eaten is).
I'm not discouraging you or judging you at all, but you could probably benefit from a more comprehensive solution than just surgery. After this you will really be at the end of the road with surgery, unless you have more of your intestine bypassed. What is your solution to your food issues beyond surgery?

her1981 reacted to OutsideMatchInside in 2 years out - what is your daily menu like?
@crazyplantlady
How I eat at 2.5 years is basically the same as how I was eating at year one. Just slightly larger portions. My dense Protein portion size is unchanged at 4 ounces but I can easily eat 8 ounces of fish or a 6 ounce burger. Which is fine for me. 8 ounces of fish doesn't even hit 200 calories.
My calories vary wildly depending on my day or mood, anywhere from 1200 to 2200. The average 1400/1500 if I am home all day (which I am most of the time I work from home).
I keep my carbs below 25 most days. My protein is always a minimum 100 grams, goal is 130 grams.
At 6 months post-op I picked a way of eating that I felt natural to me that I could stick to, so there is no real reason to change it.
My physical hunger still has not returned at all unless I go about 16 hours without eating. I do WANT to eat more, but that is due to RL circumstances. I'm a stress eater and 2017 was high stress for me. In the summer I can work off steam being outside, in the winter, when I am trapped in doors it is harder.
The mental game is harder, but my sleeve is still function as always.

I am so carb sensitive that I can't lose at all if I eat carbs. 170 pounds down and still can't touch a carb without gaining. Do what works for you.

So then 120g protein and 120g carbs? Doesn't make sense. Unless you're doing strenuous exercise daily and need the immediate availability of the energy carbs bring there's no need for that much carbs. For most people, who live sedentary and low active lifestyles, adequate protein and fat content will supply more than enough energy for their day to day lives.

Can you believe that they had me eating 170ish grams of protein!? Ngl my quads and calves looked phenomenal though. And YESS. All my life. I'm 5'9 and weigh 275. I've gained about 20 pounds (which is why I decided on the surgery) but when I was lifting I was 250ish. This is what I looked like at 250 ish.

I can! I love how it makes me feel and the results I get following a ketogenic diet. I actually prefer my keto meals. Grains and sugar make my joints hurt and my feet swell.

I see the horse is still being beaten...
If you can eat carbs responsibly and still lose, eat them. If you can't, don't. It's simple. It's YOUR body. You don't have to do or eat anything you don't want to. Do what works for you. Just make sure you get your Protein. Case closed. ✌
Now, conventional wisdom says doing "what works for you" is probably how you ended up needing bariatric surgery, but I'll leave that alone.

@slimmingsteff
bread can be filling because it can expand in the stomach for some people. Maybe rice does, I don't know, I'm not vary familiar with rice.
Anything thin and dry is going to break down to nothing. So things like crackers, thin crust pizza, chips, crispy Cookies. They break down to mush basically in your mouth and you can eat unlimited quantities. They are called sliders.
It is going to depend on the density and the Fiber in the carbs.
I feel like this thread should be retitled, making the case for carbs.

her1981 reacted to OutsideMatchInside in Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
23 months.
I know lots of people that eat more carbs than me and are successful long term.
The thing is I don't actually like carbs, so I don't eat them. I eat the things I like.
I hate rice, I hate Beans, I don't like Pasta unless it is freshly made and then only one kind, and only like fresh baked (rye and pumpernickel) bread. and croissants. Crackers just make no logical sense to me what so ever. I think I have eaten crackers less than 5 times in my entire life and I am just making that number up because I can't even recall eating them.
The issue with carbs post-op from WLS is carbs are EASY to eat. They go down very easy because they don't trigger restriction and you can eat them in massive (normal sized and binge size) quantities. So a lot of people that are food addicts go right back to carbs as soon as they get a chance. Then once they start, they can't seem to stop.
My choice to limit and not introduce carbs came from not only just not liking them but from years and years of reading stories on WLS forums of people that regained. There was always one common denominator, carbs. Complex or otherwise. Complex seem to be a gateway to not so complex.

You can often find out about people by clicking on their name. It takes you to their profile and if they have filled it out you can see their stats. Outside is almost 2 years out and almost to goal.
Everyone is different. Some can handle carbs all the time, some can't, ever. Some can't lose with carbs, but they need them for maintenance.
We are a varied group. From the 180lb lady with PCOS but no true food addiction to the 700lb man that is bed ridden and food is his life... and everything in between.
We are all here to make ourselves healthier and happier, and if what we were doing before worked, we wouldn't be HERE!
Most of us didn't gain weight eating salmon and asparagus. That IS something we have in common.

Ok fine. Here is a definition. I guess I got confused because meat + spinach is definitely ketogenic.
What’s the difference between a ketogenic and a low-carb diet?
What is the difference between ketogenic diet and low-carb diet? Who has to follow a ketogenic diet and who needs to follow a low-carb diet?
Please let me know the main difference between the two diets above?
Thanks,
S.Kumar
Ketogenic is an ultra low-carb diet, which causes production of ketones. Ketones are produced when the body runs out of sugars (carbs). The blood glucose is saved for the brain, and the body converts fatty acids into ketones. These can cross the blood brain barrier to fuel the brain. The muscles do not use ketones – instead they can directly metabolize fatty acids.
So you can still follow a low carb diet but not be ketogenic. You do not necessarily need to be ketotic to lose weight, but it is something that people can measure through breath testing or urine testing to ‘confirm’ they are following a low carb diet.

her1981 reacted to OutsideMatchInside in Surgery postponed for the right reason
You can't grow back something removed from your body. It is gone forever. Sleeve is really more perm that RNY since RNY can stretch and a properly formed sleeve cannot stretch out, RNY patients keep their entire stomach in their body forever, it is just severed. Many post-op people RNY have an expanded stomach at the top of their intestine. And in extreme circumstances, RNY is reversible, the sleeve isn't since the stomach is removed and disposed of.
@SEAHAWKS FAN! I'm glad you decided not to have surgery if your heart wasn't in it. I feel like too many people have surgery when they are not committed 100%. Post-op is a lot easier when you have totally bought into the process. Good luck with whatever you choose.

her1981 reacted to Sosewsue61 in Why are post-op diets so different?!
I see other commonalities:
Protein first (forever) 60-80-100 grams, no liquids with meals, then vegetables

her1981 reacted to PatientEleventyBillion in Do you HAVE to follow a low carb diet?
So.. similar to a Keto diet.
When you're intake is less than a thousand calories a day, to attain that amount of protein means __________.
The way the body burns off fat is through ketosis. Body produes ketones when deprived carbohydrates to tell the body to use other sources of energy, called gluconucleogenesis -- this is especially healthy in obese people. It's no surprise when people find themselves eating sliders like bread, rife with wheat at that, they retain Water and find themselves stalling or retaining fluids as @her1981just emphasized as I was typing this up.
The only reason during weight loss to up their caloric intake, and carbs, is if they're body building or doing significant exercise. For the vast majority of people on sites like this who are sedentary or low active, carb intake is proportionate to chances of failure.

There's been a lot of great responses already about doing what is right for you and your body...ditto that.
I am definitely not trying to talk you into anything or make any type of point, I just wanted to share the benefit I get out of low carb in case you were wondering why anyone in their right mind would give up bread!
I'm not in ketosis because I eat fruit and Beans, but I avoid grains, sugar and potatoes. When I eat like this, I do not have any cravings and am not tempted by anything and its smooth sailing. But, boy oh boy, one piece of bread, and that dopamine high triggers all kinds of cravings for a few days and I want to eat everything in sight. I can still lose while eating carbs, it is just so hard to stay on track. Since I can lose, I guess I am not carb-sensitive as I've heard others describe - I'm just a junkie!
I'm quite jealous of you. I wish I could lose while eating carbs. enjoy
