So found out I had a bleeding ulcer, lost 2 units of blood, needed a transfusion. I'm feeling much better, and bleeding is controlled.

bostongirlforever got a reaction from bugsy72 in Are you COLDER after surgery?
Yes! I live in Florida yet still cold all the time lol. Very typical of having lost lots of weight. I just always have a sweater in the car because you never know when you'll need it ☺

if it's mostly right after you eat, it could be a stricture. Otherwise, maybe dehydration? Lactose intolerance? Hard to tell. I'd call my surgeon's office and let them know.

bostongirlforever reacted to Madeleine Renee in Does anyone do protein bars?
Why can't you have a Protein shake?
Premier makes great shakes, low carbs, 30g of Protein, best on the market.
I occasionally do Quest Protein Bar. I find that a whole one is too much so, I break it in two and have it for a snack.
Good luck.

bostongirlforever reacted to Dub in Does anyone do protein bars?
Atkins would be the last bar I'd want due to all the sugar alcohol.
It screws my system up badly. Maybe you'll have better results.
Quest Bars are hands down the best I've ever tried. Very high in Protein, low in sugar, high in Fiber and the flavor is killer.
Most all of the Protein powder when mixed with ice Water seems to work out great for me. There is a wide, wide range of excellent low-carb Protein Powder available.

bostongirlforever reacted to Inner Surfer Girl in More carbs for intense exercise
Good carbs: whole fruits, vegetables, oatmeal, quinoa, etc.
Bad carbs: starches, processed food.
Definitely talk to your NUT. Your trainer may have some good ideas but not know how to apply them to a bariatric patient.

Oh this makes me sad Please don't let old habits sabotage the tool you've been given. I can eat like a champ if I wanted to at almost 5 months out but I dont. I can't go back to the unhealthy person I was. Get back to weighing portions, healthier options and it will start coming off. It's not too late and positivity is number one. I believe in you!!

Decaf tea! Delish. I got blueberry yesterday and I'm excited to try it today.

@ Bostongirlforever I ordered my power recliner some time last week I think. Nevertheless it'll be here soon. I have a platform bed, I knew I wouldn't be able to get in and out of it easily. I also ordered a shower stool. My shower is extremely slippery and nothing to hold onto. I ordered it from Walmart or Amazon. Not really sure, I have ordered pretty much everything I'll need.

bostongirlforever reacted to Cervidae in Sleep
I agree with @@bostongirlforever - a recliner will be a Godsend for you if you're able to sleep in one. I also slept with pillows on either side of me to give me some extra fluff/support, and it helps me not to move around as much as I usually do in my sleep. I'm a side fetal sleeper... you can imagine how annoying it was to be forced to lay straight on my back for a couple weeks. Good luck, feel better!

Best thing I ever did was sleep in a recliner for a month. I couldn't sleep at all in my bed the pain was terrible. If you don't have one and don't know somebody you can borrow from, I'd go to a Rent a Center. I promise you'll sleep again. I hope you feel better soon!

The surgery you got is not a therapist. It will not stop your food addiction. You can definitely sabotage it. It was meant as a tool to help you lose weight, but it still requires hard work on our part. We have to change our pattern of eating. I was taught that 1/2 of the meal should be Protein, 1/4 fruits/vegetables, and if you can still eat, the final 1/4 should be whole-grain or complex carbs. Although having 1 (one) slice of pizza every once in a while won't kill you, making a habit of having that or other such foods (such as hamburgers) will stop or reverse your weight loss.
Grazing (eating small amounts throughout the day) will also sabotage your weight loss. Drinking high-calorie beverages will also sabotage your weight loss. Both of these habits get around your surgical restrictions.
For your food addiction, you should definitely see a therapist. Group therapy might work as well.
Your weight loss is up to you, not the surgery. It was not a magic bullet to lose weight.

I am a little disappointed reading some of these replies. I think a few of the responses have been judgemental and a lot of assuming going on. There is a difference between support, tough love and unwanted criticism. I don't think all of you have malice in your hearts but, to this OP I bet she is feeling attacked and not all understood. This is a process and we all are at different stages. While we are adults and sugarcoating is not something any of us need I think a little less of the jumping in to only repeat an unpopular and potentially very hurtful response is just not necessary.

Have you googled Bariatric shake recipes? I have many great sounding ways to modify plain shakes. I ordered this and am so glad I did as it not only has ideas but ways to work with the powder to make it the texture/consistency desired: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/1480101095/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?qid=1441633999&sr=8-1π=SY200_QL40&keywords=bariatric+shakes+book&dpPl=1&dpID=41Q8WEwHzpL&ref=plSrch

bostongirlforever reacted to numeby2017 in Want RNY but surgeon may do Sleeve if I don't lose enough abdomen weight preop
Thank you all, I am still in my 1st phase of visits and nothing has been submitted to insurance yet, the surgeon did say he would go into operating room with 100% intention to do RNY because he believes that is best choice for me as well. But he advised if there wasn't enough room to move around to get the RNY done he would do sleeve for my own safety and can go back and do RNY after I dropped some weight. And he said he's only had to do that a few times out of the thousands of surgeries he has done, but that he has to let me know it's a possibility. So maybe i am worried about nothing, he is just giving full disclosure. -

My Bmi was 52 I believe (308 at 5'5"; lifetime recorded high at weight watchers. .. 332.... I believe I may have hit 350 at some point
I lost about half my body weight post sleeve and lost 150 in 14 months to hit goal of 158 in Feb 2013. I am now maintaining 10# over goal which I don't feel bad about- will hit 4 years post sleeve in December .
I feel estatic with my results but I think you should switch surgeons to someone who believes in the surgery you want.
I am a billion percent satisfied with the sleeve but look at new studies. ... there is a reason the gastric bypass is the gold standard. Over the long haul statistically the rny shows better results.
I never seriously researched bypass but I think the key is to understand maintenance.

bostongirlforever reacted to Marlymamamar in Need advice please!
Thank you all for your advice, stories and encouragements. I love the advice James gave to just be patient sand let the magic happen. It makes sense to me now that yes I was full of fluids and I'm sure the initial weightloss was all the fluids I was pumped up with and now my body is adjusting to this new way of being nourished.
Wildcat, I feel so much at ease hearing about you being 6 mo. post-op and your journey. That's kind of what I needed to hear-that I was "normal" lol! Bostongiirl, I was thinking my weightloss would be fast and furious but it's probably a good thing it can speratic. Thanks!!
As far as me following the Dr. Instructions, yes I'm following them to a T. The only thing I did not follow was the crushing of the meds. I did it for 4 days and couldn't bear it no more. I let my Dr. Know and he said it was fine as long as I cut them into small pieces which I began doing. I'm able to drink the 64 ounces of Fluid, I have been getting 60-70 grams of Protein a day, I am now on the puréed diet stage and am tolerating it nicely, I'm taking all of my supplements and meds, and I started walking the day of surgery in the hospital and taking the recommended 6 short walks a day while deep breathing. I spoke to my Dr. On the phone about 4 days post-op and asked if I could go back to work the following Monday and he said if I felt good, had no pain go for it. I also asked about exercise and he said everything except lift/weight training.
Before my surgery I lost about 65 pounds on my own with diet and excersing. I began logging everything in my fitness pal and excercising 60-90 per day 6 days a week. Walking has been one of my every day physical activities and I hit about 14,000 steps per day on average which is about 9 miles. I walk the stairs as well, weekly I go up about 80 flights of stairs. I work out 3-4 days aweek in the gym and take Water aerobics and swim laps 2 days a week. So my activity level was pretty high before surgery and my Dr. Was well aware of that he said I'm a big, strong, fit girl???? my weightloss was about 2-3 pounds per week and sometimes less. I saw my Dr. this past Tuesday and my incisions have healed very nicely. He gave me the approval to get back in the pool for water aerobics. So you all are probably right about gaining muscle and me needing to be patient!
I'm ready to not be obese and just be fit and I'm anxious because I know it's coming! Thanks again for your feedback! I really appreciate it! I'm so glad I found this online support community!

are you tracking what you eat at this point? The most important thing is for you to get Protein and fluids, which it sounds like you are.
Do you feel like you are eating too much or too often or the wrong things?
If you are basing your concern solely because you are not losing as fast as you would like then you have to get in the right mindset. Some people lose slower in the beginning but it all evens out over time. I was a fast loser in the first 2 months and now I average between 8/10 lbs per month.
But if you know you are eating things that are high in carbs, low in Protein or grazing throughout the day then you may need to adjust those behaviors.
The best way to know this is to track what you put in your mouth, even if it's bad. It will provide insight, my fitness pal is an excellent app for tracking if you are not already.
If all is well with what you are eating and drinking, then stick to your plan, you are doing fantastic!
Good luck!
