  1. I'm so sorry, Stuart!

I don't have any experience with this, but I have read on these boards that initial rejections were reversed after a call to the ins co by your surgeon. Maybe it will work in your case.

I've also heard that it can sometimes come down to who you talk with at the ins co - which would make sense since the original person said it was covered. Perhaps another call or two will make the difference.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you!

  2. Got it - thanks!

Are you talking about a script for the throat spray?
Did they just give it to you in the hosp when you started w/ esophageal spasms, or did nurses have to get MD order? Or did you get from internist when you got home? Just trying to clarify. Thanks.

I had both at same time..everyone's different I had esophagus spasms it started when I started sipping water..after the first night I had my surgeon keep me in another night to stay hooked on iv I knew I would leave and end up in er I could barely drink didn't want to get dehydrated. I was given a script by my internist to numb my throat and coat on down I just had to be super careful to much would numb my mouth so I had to get it as far back before I swallowed..haha..ended up sipping on luke warm teas..last for 2 wks for me..my gerd never left still had it for about the first 6 months or so but it's resolved itself..been doing good for several months..everyone's different. Maybe talk to your surgeon about a script for stand by just in case..? Just suggestion..first month for me was hard..I was 4 months getting energy back..best wishes..

my internist called a liquid in for me..after I was home. It was a Water soluble novicane..

  4. I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv. I have not yet had surgery. Having said both these things, I'll also add that the jury is out on this one. Some doctors forbid carbonization &/or caffeine post op - others say it makes no difference, in moderation. I would say this one should be a point of discussion between you & your surgeon, rather than his nurse. (No flames please, I'm an RN...)

The reason I say this is because my son is a candidate for VSG - as am I. When he saw the NUT and explained that he "needed" caffeine as he works on the railroad and works all 3 shifts in any given week, she said he should change jobs & avoid caffeine altogether due to acid reflux. Seriously?!?

Upon speaking with his surgeon, he was told he could try caffeine in small amounts to determine it's effect.

I've also learned that "nutritionist" is a term without legal definition, unlike Registered Dietician. NO offense intended to the many well qualified nutritionists out there.

  5. I'm interested in your experience post op VSG.

I went to the obligatory pre op support group session and listened to questions & answers from the attendees. Many questions related to post op pain/nausea, etc. 100% of the respondents reported minimal to no pain/nausea. All said they rarely or never took the pain pills ordered when they got home. Some reported mild nausea, passing after a few days. A few said they slept in recliners because it was more comfortable for a few days.

Now I've discovered these boards and have read some real horror stories! While I realize that people are more prone to complain than praise on the internet, a couple these stories bordered on tragic.

I had a laparoscopic GB removal with an uneventful & pretty painless recovery. I expected this surgery to be similar. Now I hear of people needing pillow support to cough & on the ride home (something I equate with large abdominal incisions rather than lap surgery), and even N & V requiring repeat hospitalizations with IV hydration & possibly TPN.

Am I being unrealistic in thinking the two surgeries (VSG & GB) are even remotely the same with regards to post op expectations? For the record, I'll also have a hiatal hernia repair with the VSG.

I know each person will have an individual experience, but can you please relate your experience?

Would appreciate hearing "The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly".

Not trying to scare myself - just trying to get a handle on what CAN be expected. I've already heard what my surgeon expects my experience to be like - would like to hear what yours actually was.

    TIA

  6. That's an awesome looking freezer, Bluesea! Glad you brought up the fact that the liquid diet lasts for such a short time. I probably would have gone overboard...

Thanks for the info on the Protein powder, Terry - I was really more interested in whether freezing had any deleterious effects tho. Have ordered/purchased lots of sample pkts of the powder - just haven't been able to bring myself to try any of them yet!
