muncheechee got a reaction from Lexigurl82 in Overeating : Low Carb v. Moderation
Okay, since surgery (vsg Feb 2016) I've tried to stay very low carb and feared carbs in moderation because I didn't want to end up overeating them and gaining. Well now I'm finding myself having a really hard time staying low carb and I keep binging on carbs. I keep trying to get back on the very low carb wagon and I'll do good for a day or so but then over indulge in sugary junk. I'm gaining and freaking out because I am not sure how to fix this.
So I'm considering not being so restrictive with carbs to see if I can overcome this all or nothing mentality and find more of a balance with my eating so that I can continue towards my goal. Thoughts???

muncheechee got a reaction from Austin1966 in The 6 Month Struggle
Yep, in the beginning I was all like, "I can't lose more than 20 pounds or I won't qualify." Now I'm like "Maybe if I only drink Protein shakes before my next weigh in I will counter act those giant cheeseburger pounds I put on this week." It's crazy. I need to lose weight to prove I can follow a program but I can't lose too much or I won't qualify... so I say screw it and go looking for chocolate. Insanity.

My insurance is one of many that requires a 6 month medically supervised diet before they will approve surgery. My bariatric office has a medical dr. that is supervising me during this time and I go in for another appt. with her on Tuesday after having been on this program for 2 months now. And I've not been sticking to the program well. I've tried but man, I'm so burned out on dieting that I'm having a hard time sticking with anything consistently. I'll do fine for a couple days and track everything I eat but eventually I give in to the hunger and rebel against the deprivation. I totally feel like a failure and I'm in a funk about it. I dread going in there and having gained weight or at least not having lost any. Blah! If I could diet and be successful on my own I wouldn't need the freaking surgery! Sticking to a 1500 calorie low carb diet just feels like torture... mentally mostly. I know I need to get my act together and jump through all the necessary hoops though. Thanks for letting me rant. Anyone else have a hard time with their supervised diet?

I know exactly how you feel....I'm on a 3 month supervised diet and I'm really stressing because I'm trying not to gain weight. My surgeon doesn't want me to lose either because I'm right at a 35 BMI with High Blood Pressure and sleep Apnea.....so I'm super stressed....I feel like I want to eat everything that's bad like bad carbs and sugar. I'm hoping for a November or December surgery date. I'm so ready to get on the losers bench!!!!

For those of you waiting for an appt at Carolinas Weight Management... if you know that your insurance requires a medically supervised diet then you can go ahead and start that program with them while you wait for your seminar and surgeon appt. That's what my husband and I have done because I wanted to get started asap. My sister in law got sleeved with Southeast and has had great results

muncheechee reacted to Psychsnob in Here's what I've learned...
Here's what I've learned from my doctor, nutritionists, nurses, and all of your doctors, nutritionists, and nurses:
Weight loss is a life long process.
You need to lose most of the weight in the first few months, or you won't be successful.
If you don't lose a lot of weight pre-op, surgery won't be successful.
    No pre-op diet needed.
Only Protein Shakes the week before surgery.
    Low fat diet before surgery.
No prescription pain meds after discharge from the hospital.
Prescription meds for about a month.
Only Motrin is allowed for pain from no on.
Never ever take Motrin ever again.
You can only drink Clear liquids the first week.
You need to be on Clear Liquids for as least two weeks.
You can eat very soft foods while in the hospital.
Protein shakes only for two weeks.
Protein shakes only for four weeks.
    Don't graze all day.
Make sure you eat every two hours.
Take only small sips of Water.
You must get 64oz water every day.
Don't drink water half hour before eating.
Make sure you drink 64oz water.
Don't drink water half hour after eating.
You can return to work after a week.
You'll be off work 4-6 weeks.
    No carbonated beverages ever again.
No carbonated beverages for the first six months.
You will probably start to be lactose intolerant.
Eat Greek yogurt, it's high in protein.
meat is better for you than fresh fruits and vegetables.
You'll stretch your sleeve very easily and gain all your weight back.
It's really hard to stretch your sleeve.
After 6 weeks, you can eat the same as everyone else.
You'll never eat the same again.
    No alcohol for 6 months.
    No alcohol for 1 year.
    No alcohol ever again.
Over the counter Vitamins are fine.
You can only take bariatric vitamins.
And my personal favorite, just for me: "oh you're passing out due to being malnourished? Ok, for the next three days, only drink water, don't eat anything."
    Okey Dokey, then... ????

I can only think of one person I know that lost a lot of weight and kept it off long term. For me and my husband, wls is our last hope. I certainly don't expect it to be easy. I've dieted since elementary school and I've finally come to the conclusion that I need something more to help me get my health back for good.

    So many things...
It will be incredible to be able to clothes shop anywhere I want. I hate being limited to such a small array of mostly ugly plus size clothes.
I really look forward to going to an amusement park with my hubby and not worrying that we won't fit on a ride. We have a great amusement park in our city but we've never been there together.

muncheechee reacted to glitter eyes in What I have gained...
So today is my one year post op anniversary. My new stomach is officially one year old!! It is has been one fabulous year. I started at 271 and I am at 151. I would still like to lose 10 more, but I am content with what I have lost.
Today I am reflecting on what I have gained from the new lease on life...
    1. I am in the best physical shape of my life. I can walk, run, climb, and swim without ever feeling terrible or out of breath
    2. I can buy clothes anywhere!! I especially like shopping for workout gear (who would have ever thought)
    3. I can cross my legs
    4. I can ride rides at amusement parks and have tons of room left over.
    5. I can sit in booths again
    6. I have discovered a love of camping and hiking. I am going to do a week on the Appalachian trail later this summer.
    7. Hubby and I just purchased kayaks and I am loving it.
    8. I finally feel fit enough to audition for Survivor ( one of the things on my bucket list)
    9. I have gained collarbones and hip bones
    10. I have gained a sense of accomplishment
    11. I have gained a more adventurous outlook in life- I will try almost anything once.
    12. I have gained a sense of marvel in what my body can do now and how I can keep up with everyone and sometimes surpass them.
    13. I have gained a lot of saggy skin- I am learning to accept it and move on
    14. I have gained a love of sugar. I was a rice and bread person pre op and now my weakness is cake and Cookies. I am learning to indulge just occasionally and move on- no guilt
    15. Finally I have gained an understanding that I will always be a recovering obese person and a bariatric patient. I need to stay focused on my plan even when I am maintaining.
Sorry for the long post. Somedays I just feel that what we all have gained, far surpasses a number on the scale that we have lost. I would love to hear some things that others have gained from their WLS

I'm just getting started in the process. My hubby and I are both going to get the vsg. We have to do 6 month medically supervised diet for the insurance company. We have an appointment to get that started in late June so I'm guessing the surgery will be possible next January/February timeframe.
