Maybe I should not have surgery?

You absolutely need to go meet a therapist and take your husband with you. A good therapist will help both of you see the unhealthy side of this family. If your husband does not want to go, you have your answer about his commitment to your marriage. Not very good. He should stick up for you and tell these sick women to leave you alone and not contact either one of you until they apologize and change their behaviour. This absolutely cannot be tolerated anymore. Go and have your surgery, its for YOU, nobody else! My husband and daughter know about my RNY and nobody else in the family. Many years ago, my husband sister treated me the way you mentionned. I talked to her and told her she was a miserable OLD WOMAN, and to NEVER EVER contact me or my husband or children until she has sincerely appologized and changed her attitude! It took 12 years and even then the appology was very vague.....but at least, now she does not dare insult me and she is very careful. I had a therapist through all this. My therapist told me that when you chose to continue communicating with people like that, you have to accept to deal with what they say!!! So I cut her OFF. Cut off my brother and father for a while as well, they came back after 8 years apologizing tearfully. Now, the relationship is different, but they respect me and everything is open and clear, on the table. Good luck with whatever you decide, but I still think ...go for the surgery, hopefully your husband will support you, and hurry up in therapy ...

Sick of Water? Water Enhancers Rock!

I drink Vitamin Water Zero, they have lots of different flavors and are full of Vitamins. I cannot stomach plain water since my bypass. Don't know why. I also have lots of tiny 1 bottle powder mix by Crystal Lite . I put it in a water bottle, keep in the fridge and use when I need to drink. Nice change. I have not tried the drops yet, maybe I will.

Is it possible to lose too much?

Try to get as much Protein and liquid as you can, take your Vitamins, follow your nutritionist's advice and you are all set. Losing lots of weight at the beginning is absolutely normal, then it averages out as you start eating a bit and will slowly continue losing. Good luck, the worse is over, now the real life starts for you!

    Husband rant

Sophie, I am sorry that your relationship with your husband is not the best. Unfortunately, he might be very insecure with all the changes that are happening. I have been married for 38 years and professional help might be a solution here if your husband accepts to go with you. You are not happy and he is not likely to change unless you discuss it with you. Therapy would open the door and facilitate a healthy exchange. Congratulations on your weight loss, it is fantastic. Keep working on yourself and see if you could get outside help.

    Advice about "fullness"

First, congratulations on all your weight loss. If you follow what your nutritionist tells you and do not go past the prescribed amounts, you should be fine. Your amount of food will increase a bit with time. I am at 7 weeks now, I have lost 30 lbs, and eat between 1/2 and 3/4 cup of food every meal. Everything is calculated and I try to make sure I get my Protein even if sometimes it is difficult. Good luck, you are definitely going in the right direction.

    What do you drink?

I drink 3 coffees a day, Vitamin Water Zero, sometimes crystal light. I cannot drink plain water anymore, somehow I can't swallow it and it tastes horrible, even spring water, unless it is with lots and lots of ice cubes.

    B12 shots?

I have been getting B12 injections for at least 10 years, since I started menaupose. Works great, no pain!
  9. I had gastric bypass 4 weeks ago. I saw my surgeon yesterday. He told me that they are now doing more sleeves because it is less complicated and patients do well. BUT, with people who need to lose a large amount of weight, or have co-morbidities like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, the bypass is the way to go. This surgery is what I wanted and the surgeon agreed. That psy is a total jerk, all he is supposed to do is evaluate if you are ready to change your life and go healthy. He has nothing to do with what kind of surgery you should have. Best decision you made to look elsewhere and change team! GO FOR IT

  11. I find it strange that reputable surgeons would comment negatively about the bypass. It is the golden standard. If you have any co-morbidities, it is the only way to go. My diabetes is in remission, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, I had 70 lbs to lose, already lost 23 lbs after 4 weeks and already, my health is so much better. I recommend to you to do your research on other bariatric surgeons in your area or out of your area. Only a surgeon with not enough experience would make that kind of comments when research from all over the world recommend just the opposite.

    Coffee after surgery?

2 weeks after my surgery, I tried a cup.,,tasted horrible. Then, couple of days later, my husband had a cup and it smelled wonderful,,. I tasted it, it was great. I had a cup every morning for a few days. Now I can have 2 cups, no problem. I have read about other people having coffee as well, just do not abuse it.

    Anyone use citalopram or celexa?

I have been on Effexor and Valproic Acid for 14 years for panic attacks and major depression. My bariatric surgeon was told, he has the whole list of meds I take from the pharmacy. No problem whatsoever, I had my bypass 4 weeks ago and am doing wonderfully. Good luck to you, you will be fine .
  14. you probably need some Protein. My doctor prescribed 3 Protein shakes a day for a total of 90 g of protein. I was allowed boiled or steamed vegetables. So basically, no carbs! I did very well, first 2 days are the worse then, you get used to it. I am diabetic, it was good for my control for sure. This diet was for 14 days before. I am now 3.5 weeks post surgery, lost 21 lbs and doing very well. Good luck !

    Worried about post-op depression

I have had major depression and have been on Effexor and Valproic acid for the last 14 years. I had gastric bypass 3.5 weeks ago and I am doing fine. I just continued with my meds, Effexor is a capsule so I open it and put it in a spoonful of yogurt or apple sauce. The Valproic acid comes in a liquid form. I discussed the surgery with my psy and she did not see any problem, on the contrary, looking after my health is very positive. Good luck on your surgery, you will be fine and happy when you start loosing.

    Electric pill grinder needed

Do not spend that kind of money on something you will use only a short time. Try a mortar that u use for herbs, or go and ask your pharmacist. Mine was excellent and offered me my meds in different format. Ex: 4 pills 250mg instead of the huge 1000mg I could not swallow. I have had thyroid cancer surgery 6 months ago and it is very difficult to swallow even a tylenol is not possible. Once again, go to pharmacy first, way cheaper, they will help you.

What drug can I take for headache

I take Celebrex for severe arthritis. I discontinued it for the surgery but had to go back on it for severe pain. My dr prescribed Prevacid with it so I won't get ulcers. Every case is different. Talk to your dr, ask your pharmacist for suggestions, you will find something for migraines. But, you are right, tylenol is usually the way to go.

    Protein-varieties

I have a whole box of the Pure chocolate bars....yuck, taste is a mixture of dated chocolate and cardboard, not very nice. Have to be pretty desperate to eat that and I am not usually that fussy! I really like the Premier Protein shakes, chocolate and vanilla.

    Calories and being discouraged

So you have the ''breakfast food'' plus 2 Premier shakes a day? Seems to me like a lot of calories. Double check with your surgeon's recommendation, 1,800 cal a day is a fairly large amount at this point. If you have a nutritionist, you could revise with her.

    Embarrassed to go swimming

Hi, like sadhatter, I recomment www.swimsuitforall.com They have beautiful bathing suits in all sizes. 1 piece, tankinis, what you like. If you feel your thighs are big, you can get a tankine with something that looks like a bike short, it is very flattering and you should feel comfortable with it. Embarrassed? You go for yourself dear, the HELL with anybody looking at you. In a bathing suit, you see all kinds....Get a bathing suit you feel comfortable with and GO FOR IT

    Type 2 diabetes

Only RNY will cure your diabetes. It has to do with digestion and enzymes. Just losing weight through the sleeve is not enough. I have been diabetic for 20 years, before surgery, I was on 75 u of humalog insulin through a pump and onglyza pill in the morning. Now, I am at 20 u a day and my endo is talking about taking the insulin OFF completely. I am 3 weeks pass surgery. I have lost 20 lbs. I would discuss this with surgeon again, mention it to your endo, and research a bit, RNY is the best surgery for you if you want to get rid of diabetes. Good luck.

Doctor Passing Me off to Assistant

I saw my surgeon once last year when he took my history, and approved me for the bypass. I was recommended for this surgery by my endo, family dr and psychiatrist. I had my surgery on August 18 and entered the operating room without seeing him. Before they put me to sleep, I yelled, eh! wait a minute I want to see my surgeon and make sure he is here! He lowered his mask and laughed. During my 3 days post-op, I saw his resident once or twice a day. I was peeved! But, I also have to admit that I had to complication whatsoever. I have an appt. on Sept 17, 1 month follow up and was told I will be seeing him! To be continued!
