  1. Had my first appointment with the Dr. at UCLA today. No surgery date but since I have bad GERD/Reflux he requested a Endoscopy before proceeding. I am a little nervous. Did anyone else have this done? Besides that I met with the dietitian and all I need to do I go to a new patient class and have some blood work and meet with the Psych and I'm ready.

Any info would be great I know they will sedate me but I am a little nervous.

  2. My insurance says:

All of the following conditions must be met to qualify:

    • You're at least 18 years old or you must provide documentation of completion of bone growth.
    • You were unsuccessful with non-surgical medical treatments for obesity. Your medical records must show your failed attempts.
      • Diet programs, such as Weight Watchers®* and Jenny Craig*, are acceptable methods of dietary management, as long as there are monthly clinical visits with your doctor and medical documentation of your participation and your progress throughout the course of the dietary program. *These programs are not covered by TRICARE.
      • Physician-supervised programs made-up of only weight-loss medication management, do not meet this requirement.
    • You have proof of one of the following:
      • A body-mass index greater than or equal to 40 kilograms per meter squared (kg/m2); or
      • A body-mass index of 35-39.9 kg/m2 with one clinically significant comorbidity, including but not limited to, cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, obstructive sleep apnea, Pickwickian syndrome, hypertension, coronary artery disease, obesity-related cardiomyopathy, or pulmonary hypertension.

I am 5'7 and 219 which makes me about 34 BMI. I don't want to get declined. I have 4 comorbidities but not sure if that matters if I am no 35 BMI at my first appointment on May 12th. Any suggestions?

  3. @@TLW Thanks! I REALLY hope I don't have to do a 3 or 6 month dietician visits. I have been supervisied by 4 doctors since 2005 with no luck. I have tried every crazy diet and pill and medication and workout known to man. I did Insanity and T25 and lost it and the next week gained it right back. I even went vegetarian and no salt no carb no sugar and still gained. Its frustrating! Everyone says I carry my weight well and don't look over 200lbs but my knees and back beg to differ. I hope RNY is my savior too to somehow reset my body and life.

  4. @bahuber5477I have comorbidities such as ahtritis in my back and knees, PCOS, pre-diabetes, infertility and GERD so after many years of medications, strict dieting under 800 calories a day and walking 2 miles a day + 45mins of cardio a day and just gaining and gaining my doctors agreed this would be the best option.

  5. I am just in in the consultation stage, my 1st appointment is May 12th. I know I want the surgery as soon as possible. I am 219lbs now, my highest was 223. Should I try and start losing now or wait til my appointment. I don't want to lose and then go to the appointment and them say I need to lose more before surgery. If I lose too much will they cancel the surgery or think I don't need it? A friend told me to gain as much as possible before the consultation so that I can lose it when they ask. But not sure what the best is to do.

  6. How did you approach telling people? I've told my fiance, he is on board "whatever makes me happy and healthy" and my mom is on board but the rest of my family is SUPER into fitness and thinks diet and exercise is always enough and I'm sure they will think I'm just lazy. Also my job, I need to tell them for the recovery time off but I don't need to tell why....but should I? I work in a small office of 20 people and I'm nervous for reactions. I've told my direct boss, since she and I workout together she knows and understands.

My first appointment/consult is on the 12th of May.

  7. I hope with the comorbitites (sp?) I won't have all that waiting. I have been on a 800 cal diet for 1 year and workout 45 mins per day too. I need to learn to chew instead of "vacuum " my food. Haha. I don't drink or smoke or eat fast food or drink sofa so that part won't be bad. Thanks so much!

  8. Hi! I am 31 years old diagnosed with PCOS and pre-diabetic with early arthritis in my lower back and knees. My BMI is 34. I got a referral from my doctor last week, did my application with UCLA Bariatic Surgery for a roux-en-y procedure and am waiting for an appointment. I live in Los Angeles and have struggled with my weight since 2003 from 130lbs to 223lbs to 145lbs now back at 219lbs.

Any tips for my first appointment would be appreciated.
