My whole family knows and all my in-laws know, but I haven't told many coworkers or friends (just two total). I've lost significant amounts of weight "on my own" in the past, so most people just assume I'm doing that again. By the time they realize I'm not regaining this time around, it'll be too late for them to comment.

arrical8 reacted to Djmohr in Wanted sleeve. Help me believe RNY is better.
I too had a severe case of Gerd prior to surgery and I went in wanting the sleeve for all the same reasons you mentioned. When I was told that RNY was the best surgery for me I actually got a second and third opinion.
Every doctor told me I would be making a huge mistake to have the sleeve given my Gerd situation. I actually have psoriatic arthritis and my spine has been deteriorating since I was in my early 30s. It had nothing to do with Calcium deficiencies. I have had 5 back surgeries and am looking at another in the coming months.
Here is the thing RNY has literally given me my life back. I take the calcium that is perscribed to me and have my labs checked regularly,
The folks that struggle with malabsorption are the folks that do not take their Vitamins and do not follow up with their bariatric team.
Seriously don't be afraid to do what is going to keep you healthier in the long run. RNY is the best thing that ever happened to me besides my kids and hubby. Do some more research, it will help you through this. I also have never had dumping syndrome and can eat what I want. I choose to eat very healthy.
    Good luck to you!

    My name is Arrica

A little about me, I am a mom to 4 kids, I work full time, and I am morbidly obese. I have always had weight issues; always been the heavier girl in the crowd. I have been dieting my whole life, but in September 2010 I decided to do something about it for good. I began my journey to lose weight and become healthier using the Medifast program. On the morning of October 14, 2011, I celebrated 150 pounds lost.

Later that same day, I also celebrated a new pregnancy and two weeks later was told I was having twins. My weight loss journey came to an abrupt halt. Over the course of my pregnancy, I gained 129 pounds.

Since the birth of my twins, I have been gaining and losing weight, trying desperately to get back to the size I once was. I now weigh 186 pounds more than I did on October 14th. I currently have a BMI of 55.5

I have talked about Weight Loss Surgery for 20 years. I began researching my options, surgeons, and attending seminars 12 years ago. I started getting serious 2 years ago and I am currently looking at the gastric sleeve. I will be a self pay patient.

My goals are to be happy in my own skin again, lose weight, move more, and become a better me.

I know I have the motivation and will power to lose the weight again; I just need the support and accountability the gastric sleeve will provide me.

Some insurance requires it. Some doctors require it.
My insurance didn't require pysch, nutrition, stress test, EGD, etc... But my surgeon required those things.
He wants to set each person up for success. Pysch to make sure you are mentally prepared for it, nutritinal counseling to make sure you are aware of how the pre-op diet works and what your diet will be like after surgery, stress test to make sure your heart is ok for anesthesia and surgery and to make sure you don't have any blood clots, and an EGD to make sure that all is good down there and check for a hernia so that there aren't any surprises.
It covers his butt, and makes it a safer surgery for the patient.
