    Elective insurance coverage

what caused me to look into this elective insurance option is I noticed that Dr. Kelley in Tijuana offers the cover for $250 but I later found out it only covers complications during surgery or while you are recovering in Mexico. It does not cover complications when you return to the U.S. I'm signed up with Corvala at Hospital Angeles. They said that they have looked hard for insurance to cover post op complications but haven't been able to identify any policies that would make sense for patients. That caused me to look at my own health insurance policy fine print. I am fortunate to be covered by two health plans but neither covers bariatric surgery. The first plan is silent as to whether it would cover post bariatric surgery complications. The second plan does cover post surgery complications for elective surgery but I had to dig through the fine print to find it and the insurance company rep I spoke to orignally gave me the wrong answer over the phone and I had to correct her leading to her eventually agreeing with me. If you are going to have elective bariatric surgery and are under a health plan you may want to check to see if your plan will cover post op complications(i.e. leaks or strictures) from elective surgery. If it doesn't cover post op complications and you are one of the unlucky ones that develops complications it could obviously lead to very large out of pocket medica bills.
  2. Both my health plans don't cover bariatric surgery. My state doesn't mandate bariatric coverage. As a result I am looking at going with Corvala at hospital angeles in Tijuana. If I have post op complications I believe my two health plans won't cover post op complications. Does anyone know of separate insurance policies I could buy that would cover post op elective surgery complications for vsg,
  3. Which dr ortiz are you referring to. There are two surgeon with that name in TJ. Aerial ortiz with occ sutures over the staple line. I am not sure about the other dr ortiz with alighterme.

How much was you self-pay ?

I agree...i would be terrified to have vsg surgery in the u.s or Mexico for less than 3500.

I intend to see if they and or othe companies offer optional policies to cover post op complications from elective vertical sleeve gastrectomy VSG in Mexico. My tentative plans are to use Dr. Corvala at Hospital Angeles in June. I am concerned that if I return to the U.S. and have post op complications would my primary and secondary health policies in the U.S. give me a difficult time about payment for post op complications if my procedure was considered elective and in mexico. If anyone has any experience or thoughts regarding this I would appreciate your comments. http://www.cosmetassure.com/
  6. Here is another company with the type of insurance policy I'm referring to and there are several other companies that offer this coverage. What put me onto this is that Dr. Kelley who is a bariatric surgeon in Tijuana does VSG surgery sometimes at Hospital Angeles and other places in the TJ area offers Medical Tourism insurance as part of his package for an extra 250 dollars. It seems to me that it would be money well spent to have this coverage in case I get back to the u.s. and develop vsg related complications. I have a feeling my primary and secondary health insurance companies in the u.s currectly covering me would give me a hard time about paying for any complications related to an elective vsg. i would have better piece of mind having surgery in tijuana if I had a policy like this to cover large unforseen medical bills due to vsg complications when i get back to the u.s. Note that I'm not pluging any of these companies. Just wondering if others have experience buying these type of policies for vsg surgery in Mexico. https://www2.sevencorners.com/medical-tourism-insurance/ MEDICAL TOURISM INSURANCE Why Buy Medical Tourism Insurance? How much was you self-pay ?

3499 is the cheapest price in TJ. No way that it is 3499 in dallas unless he has insurance coverage.
  9. I would just want to very carefully look at quality for a vsg package of 3499 in tj
  10. I would prefer two lines of suturing just to be safe similar to dr. Kim. I plan to ask Corvala his thoughts on that,

Which Dr to choose in Mexico

David, I really want a legitimate full scale hospital at par with u.s facilities. Angeles is giving me five nights in a real hospital...not a recovery facility. Ortiz at occ is my second choice and Nicholson in dallas is my third choice. I'm sure your affiliated surgeons are good as well.

How much was you self-pay ?

Kim quoted me 14900 for there traveling program. I am talking to Nicholson in dallas but leaning towards Corvala at hospital angeles. I like the one day pre op and four days post op in a real full hospital. Care if I have a complication when I get home is a real concern as he is TJ.

Any 'self pay' sleevers out there?

Corvala at hospital angeles in Tijuana for 6500. I have two health insurance policies and neither cover any bariatric. It is not mandatory in my state. Cost is 22k to 25k in my state.
  14. I'll be Tijuana at hospital angeles with Corvala june 29 returning july 4. I am sure it will be hot in TJ then. I am married with one four year old. Good luck to all.

    Nights in hospital

Five nights...one pre op and four post op with Corvala at hospital angeles in TJ, mx. I have read a lot of posts were patients still have issues three or four days out.
  16. Vsg with ortiz at occ is 6500. I think it is the second option in TJ to Corvala and hospital Angels. Angeles probably thinks they can charge 1000 more because it is a real full scale hospital. I will stay at hospital angeles five nights.
  17. Dr. Corvala does suture over the staple line
  18. I'm referring to the surgeon affiliated with the OCC. OCC and Hospital Angeles appear to be the only two places I can get comfortable with but everyone should do their own due diligence on surgeons with a health bit of skeptiscm regarding their marketing claims so they can make the best decision for their bodies and future.
  19. I'm scared out of wits too. Yes I'm leaning towards Covarla based on the reasons I listed above but my mind is not 100 percent made up. My surgery date isn't until June 30 so I have ample time to switch surgeons. and would only forfeit 65 dollars if I do. The other TJ surgeon I would consider is Ortiz. That's why I'm on the Ortiz page I think some civil discourse and debate and what ones likes and doesn't like is helpful. I certainly don't expect anyone to agree with my opinion. I found the comments about Ortiz above that were posted in response to my posting were helpful. It showed some things patients liked about Ortiz and somthing things that could potentially be improved. There is nothing more valuable to me this decsion making process that getting objective comments good and bad from prior patients. If I ultimately do decide to use Corvala which I'm obviously heavily leaning towards I will post my experience both the good and the bad. Ortiz is a good surgeon and i appreciate the insights of his prior patients as it helps me in my decision process. Note that I rushed my decision to use Corvala due to the price increase from 6500 to 7500 on 2-15. I recently became aware of ortiz and wanted to learn more about him and the occ.
  20. Hi, how are feeling post op? When you are feeling better i would appreciate your insights of Corvala and angeles. Thanks
  21. Rubygirl: I am just trying to get information and share ideas so that I can make an informed well thoughtout decision regarding who my TJ surgeo will be. I have nothing against Dr. Ortiz have seriously considered using him based on posts on this forum thread. Certainly if you don't like what I write, feel free not to read my posts.
  22. Corvala's case coordinator claims that only Corvala does the surgeries and the doctors studying underneath him do not perform them. Apparently they only observe at the patients consent. The posts above reaffirm my decision to go with Hospita Angeles instead of the OCC because of the much longer post op hospital care offered by Hospital Angeles. I'm also a bit turned off by Ortiz's marketing literature that was emailed to me which claims he has experienced zero complications wiith his VSG procedures.
