Every doctor that has done a very high number of surgeries for a very long time will unfortunately have deaths eventually. It is still safer to have surgery than to stay obese and risk all the comorbidities. that come along with obesity. Dr. Elias Ortiz had a death recently. There was one, not two. The patient was very high risk and and had a massive heart attack the night after surgery.
I also noticed that some people have confused one Dr. Ortiz with another Dr. Ortiz. I cannot speak to any information except for information about Dr. Elias Ortiz. Dr. Elias Ortiz is the chief surgeon for A Lighter Me. We have been in this business for 12 years and have a stellar reputation. We are an open book. We will answer all questions and we never try to "hide" any information. Dr. Elias Ortiz has done thousands of surgeries and he along with A Lighter Me is the number one provider of weight loss surgeries in the world! We are in no way affiliated with any other Dr. Ortiz.
Even though we do everything possible to provide a safe and successful surgery to each and every patient, sometimes the outcome isn't what is hoped for. EVERY surgeon will agree that all surgeries carry risks. Thank God that mortality is very rare and there is mostly success where people are returned to good health, stop or reduce their medications for high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.
No one can assure you that there will never be a complication during surgery, but I can assure you that Dr. Elias Ortiz is the top surgeon in his field and has successfully done thousands of surgeries. A Lighter Me has a complete aftercare program that follows each patient and helps with any questions regarding diet, food, exercise as well as medical aftercare.
If anyone has any specific questions, please feel free to call us or email.

@@Edavidson I wasn't offended by your posts. Concerns over follow-up care and post-op complications are completely valid. Before having my sleeve in Mexico, I met with my PCP here in the states, had blood work done to make sure I was fit for surgery, and contacted my insurance provider to make sure I'd be covered in the event of any post-op hospital visits. I would STRONGLY encourage anyone having surgery abroad to do the same things. I am extremely lucky and grateful to have not had any post-op issues, but being prepared for them gave me the peace of mind I needed to proceed with my surgery.
As for deaths and specifically the deaths mentioned in this thread, I agree with others who have pointed out that there are risks associated with any surgery. I am always quick to point out that the mortality rate for gastric sleeve is lower than the mortality rate for knee replacement, but the truth is that US studies show a 0.08% 30-day mortality rate. That's 8 in 1000 people. Now, most of those people probably had health issues or comorbidities that put them at higher risk of complication and we do NOT know the circumstances surrounding the alleged deaths in this thread. It could be that those patients who died were at significantly higher risk and it might have nothing at all to do with the skill level of the surgeon or the medical resources of the facility. We have almost NO information on which to base assumptions about these deaths. So to immediately dismiss Elias Ortiz as a surgeon or Mexican surgeons and/of facilities as a whole is pretty presumptuous.

I had surgery with Dr. Ortiz March 28 2015 . My experience was wonderful. Death is a risk we all take with having surgery and it can happen anywhere. I know about one death from months ago but since then there hasnt been a second one. When ppl post like this they should show proof instead of making doctors look bad. I was afraid to go considering i went by myself but alighterme is a excellent company on top of that they r very honest so if anyone have questions on death i would just ask them. Well good luck on yall that havent had surgery yet and i hope u pick the best surgeon for your needs

kerioki reacted to gal friday in 4 weeks out. Depressed and questioning my choice.
I learned that when my body gets less than 900 calories, I stop losing weight, and that did happen to me early in my recovery.
This is a horrible thing to tell someone who is depressed. Just go feel better! Because it's that easy!

kerioki got a reaction from Miss Thinner in Looking for experiences with Dr. Elias Ortiz only
I used Dr.curiel but my hospital mate (i thought i would be in my own room even traveling alone)had Dr.ortiz so I thought I could add from my experience. Dr.ortiz was very kind ,caring and concerned about his patient having extreme nausea from surgery and followed up with her many many times in the 2 days in the hospital as well as myself even thou I was not his patient.as for the # of surgeries he does a day I can only say my day I counted 8 which had dr.ortiz.but like i said i think it was not his norm amount. maybe just booking errors as it took awhile to get our rooms.my experience kinda sucked because I listened to vomiting for 2 days n didn't rest much.I was thankful it wasn't me and I was out with no side effects. I'm in touch with those 8 and they are all doing well.

3 weeks and 12 lbs is great!! That is 4lbs a week, good for you!!
Hang in there, when is the last time you lost 12 lbs. in 3 weeks?
Eating VERY, VERY slowly and chewing well may help with the getting sick.

kerioki reacted to thick2thin in ????A shout to the February sleevers ????
I was sleeved yesterday morning in Tijuana. I'm currently in the recovery room. My initial weight was 226. And when they weighed me yesterday before my sleeve, I weighed in at 210. So pretty much, in the 10 day pre op liquid diet, I lost 16 pounds. I was in a lot of pain yesterday and was constantly gagging. Today, there's been no more gagging and very little pain! I can walked around with ease. My mouth and throat has been super dry since I woke up from the surgery yesterday, but finally, they have me some ice chips. And boy I could never have been so thankful!
Ps: as they were pushing me out of surgery room into my recovery room, I noticed a lady sitting in the lobby of the "obesity goodbye center" today. I was wondering of any of you lovely ladies on here in that lady?? I came to Tijuana by myself so I'm just looking for some company.

I am mostly excited and ready, but once in awhile well like two to three times a day lol I start to worry am I really making the right choice?!? Am I really ready for this?!? I really don't want to die! Ect... Everyone says its natural to have anxiety. This is huge, and it IS life changing! I actually have decided to stay on with the therapist who I had my psych evaluation with and made an appointment on Tuesday. Just to hash out some of my fears and anxieties.
Also... I tried the Isopure Protein Water... It was good but I found it to be sweet so I worry that after the surgery it will be too sweet. However maybe on ice and watered down in little sips it will be good.
