ab123. got a reaction from Sunshine41! in 5 years post op and have huge REGRET!
Hi, Yes, my surgery was a waste of time, has left me in worse shape, and it has been 5 years and 4 months. I come on here every few years, but you won’t find anyone who understands. This is a site for the cheerleaders of the surgery. I came today to see if anyone knew of a site for support for failed surgeries or food addiction. NOT OVEREATERS ANONYMOUS. My overeating is still 1000 calories a day, but the surgery destroyed my body.

I'm sorry you didn't find my post helpful, but if there were more posts like this I wouldn't be in the spot I am in. If you don't want to hear negative comments then looking at a topic called REGRETS.
I have had several responses that show I am the exception not the rule, but I deserve to be able to express myself as well.
I wish you luck and good health.

∆ all great suggestions so far ∆
Also please consider returning to the original Surgeon) practice (or find a new surgeon) to run adequate testing, if met with resistance consider this advice (even if only to create a paper trail):

A lot of people on this forum have trouble with regain and head hunger.
    Yours truly does.
I suggest you dig around you may find some posts that help you.
I have an eating disorder. I have lost and gained weight numerous times.
I found that welbutrin (an antidepressant) helped me with a lot of my compulsions.
I got down to 200 lbs.from 350 after rny but regained after moving in with my mom who had food in her house. Part of my way of dealing with my eating disorder was to not have food in the house. So I gained back 70 lbs.
Then when I moved out I lost about 30 lbs. Just going back to not living with food.
I have plateaued at 240. And am trying Optifast. So we will see how that goes.
One suggestion I have is to continue to plan your meals. Just to keep from obsessing about food.
    Good luck!
And for weight loss you may try to up your calories if they are still low. Then after awhile go back to dieting. I have heard that that tricks your metabolism into returning to weight loss mode.

Okay, no problem. But you might wanna check out FB, they have some groups dealing with food addiction that are not affiliated with OA.

I am a little more than 2 years out from my Gastric Sleeve. Problem is, I never really lost any weight. In the first few weeks after surgery, when I was dehydrated, unable to drink, nauseated, and in pain, I dropped 25 pounds which immediately came back as soon as I could consume any nutrition at all. i only lost 5 pounds from my surgery. i am at that weight today. What really disgusts me is that prior to surgery, i was losing weight regularly. i had lost 62 pounds on my own. Now, I find it impossible to do so. I wish I could use my Sleeve, but it seems to be working against me, although I am unable to eat as much as before, I can eat a substantial amount and have a large appetite. I have seen my doctor, nutritionist, etc. For medical reasons, I am unable to exercise. Any suggestions? PS. i am on Medicare, they will not pay for revision surgery as I am 5 foot 4, 195 pounds.

Each one of us attended a two year program where we lost weight if we could naturally, went to meetings, seminars, bariatric team discussions etc. We had exhaustive tests and each were either given the sleeve or bypass. My friend who had bypass was in a program that offered Excess skin removal after year one. They moved the goalposts to year two. Then they discontinued the excess skin removal agreement. She can only eat a few foods so lost all of her hair because she can't eat Proteins and has constant diarrhea. She is miserable.
All of us feel that during the two years, we were not given full and honest information regarding after effects. We weren't given any medication to prevent damage to our gallbladders nor were we warned they might have to be removed.
We weren't given information regarding food revulsion, inability to eat through the food stages, constant diarrhea, lactose intolerance etc.
We also were not told of the amount of people in our program who had complications after surgery, and we asked. My surgeon still says my surgery was "textbook" and declares his record as problem free despite my having severe complications and still being ill 8 weeks post op.
So we feel mislead. All three of us that had sleeves had severe post op complications. One had an abscess on her spleen and Fluid on her lungs and spent weeks in hospital on IV antibiotics. Her sleeve leaked and had to be re done. She is still really ill.
One of us was in intensive care for six weeks, had to have a tracheotomy and was on the critical list, he is still gravely ill.
I had a 6.6 cm abdominal abscess that nearly killed me, spent weeks in hospital, dropped over 60lbs in 4 weeks, which might have killed my gallbladder, was given a near fatal dose of Cyclizine which caused lingering stroke symptoms and I am still ill on fluids at 8 week post op and can't eat any Proteins, am now lactose intolerant, I will have my gallbladder out once the abscess clears, if I am brave enough. My wounds haven't healed yet from the sleeve op yet. I can't tolerate any Vitamins etc I am supposed to take. And the aftercare we receive has been awful and totally confusing.
We all also feel that we were not fully informed about eating after the sleeve. We were told that once we got through the stages, we would be eating normally, just small portions.
We weren't told how many of us die each year from malnutrition here in the UK.
On discharge, we were given a booklet regarding food stages and foods that might cause problems.
None of us would have had our surgeries if we had had this booklet before our sleeves.
So no, we can't get together as we are all at home, ill, mostly on antibiotics and other treatments, facing more serious ops and treatments, months after our sleeves. Most of us battling dehydration.
Another lady we know has lost over 120lbs in 8 weeks. She is still in hospital and they don't know what's wrong yet.
We feel that we have been made permanently disabled by this surgery and not given accurate information so that we could make informed decisions.
I researched this thoroughly and asked questions and was told not to worry, that they rarely had problems. They split the statistics up so that the complications are shown as ward aftercare etc.
Four out of four of us is not rare, but a 100% complication rate.
Yes, we will all have to accept our stupid decision. Our families will get over the trauma of us nearly dying from complications. I am in counselling via telephone.
We are all just hoping to be well enough to drive a car again, go to church again, eat enough food to live again. (I am still only getting 300 or so calories but I am up from 100 calories a day for six weeks).
I am not "fighting" this sleeve. I am learning to live with an elective disablement.
Maybe this is just the difference in healthcare between countries. None of us were above 250lbs, all of us could walk normally, only one of us had diabetes and still has it two years post op after all the weight was lost.

The post I was trying to make was 2 years out, no weight loss, no restriction or appetite loss. my metabolism is totally destroyed and I can no longer lose weight with diet and exercise depite losing 62 pounds on my own prior to surgery. My medical issues are worse, Gerd, bone pain. Has anyone else experienced this- total surgery fail?

My surgery was a total failure from the get go so I have been thinking of requesting an MRI to look at my sleeve. Maybe this would be an option for you also. Or some other gastric imaging study.

Yes, I was thinking about that young lady. She had the exact issue and when she returned she lost the weight and explained why and it sounds exactly like your issue. You definitely need a 2nd opinion.

Have you ever thought about getting a second opinion from another surgeon?
I was following a lady on YouTube and she, too, lost about 25-30lbs in a year, she disappeared for awhile and returned explaining she sought out a second opinion & found out she needed a revision. Within 6 months after the revision, she lost all her weight.
Hope you don't have to go down that road & maybe there's an easier answer. Just something to consider……

I would like to add something I think that my surgeon and others don't take into consideration enough. There was no individualization of care planning We are all just "Sleeves". I am sure that part of my lack of results from my surgery is my age. At 57 my metabolism, with all my comorbids has only been negatively effected by major surgery. As a RN I should have known this would be the case. A 30 year old body is going to react differently to stressors. So not everyone is going to have a great sucess story. I just wish my surgeon had been honest with me instead of saying all his his patients lose 30 pounds in the first month.
