Ashy76 reacted to lgrey in What's with all the "diet" food?
OK, here's one I haven't seen addressed: what's with all this low fat, diety food? ?? I thought maybe it would make more sense after my surgery, but it still doesn't. I'm 4 weeks post op and can only eat about a quarter cup at a time. My nut says 3-4 quarter cup meals a day. How can you possibly gain weight on 1 CUP of food a day, even if you are eating full fat meals???? Better yet, how can you NOT lose weight on one cup of food a day?
Before I started this process, I was actually eating pretty healthy. Healthy fats (avocado, coconut, EVO, even some clarified butter). I avoided simple sugars, grains and dairy; ate mostly meats, eggs, lots of vegies (with fats thank you) and some fruit. Some juicing too, mostly veggies with about 10% fruit to make them palatable. I was still overweight (portions and hormones?), but low bp and cholesterol. Healthy. Since starting this program and especially post surgery, I'm told to eat a TON of dairy (which I don't tolerate well), and lots of chemical laden sugar free fake foods like the Protein Shakes and jellos and puddings and Protein Bars, etc. And told to do low or no fat. Sites like the Bariatric Pal are constantly advocating diet food and low cal recipes.
So I just don't get it. I'm not talking about eating high fat, high calorie food all day long, but I don't see why eating healthy food with moderate fat should be a problem. So you don't lose quite as fast. Wouldn't that be healthier and maybe less issues with sagging skin? I just don't get it.
Input from veterans please...what am I missing?

Yes, it gets better. The first 3 to 6 weeks pretty much suck. Do what you're supposed to do, and you will soon find your normal. It just takes time. I compare the first month to going through labor. It's terrible as you're going through it, but soon you will forget all about it and see the end result is worth it

Hey to my lovely January Sleevers I just got back from my docs office for a check up since I can't fly back to mexico I have to rely on my family practitioner to help look after me. So I have lost 13lbs in 9 days which is great. I'm very happy about that. My incisions are sore and itchy but are healing correctly. I'm not about to get the Water and Protein in but I still manage to get enough in to keep myself moving. I went to the Chinese restaurant and bought a huge contain of Soup different kinds to mix of the flavors of food since I seem to be the only one on Clear Liquids only for 15 days. I don't even get to eat any type of solid foods until feb 12th. I hope everyone is doing well and don't forget to just walk for general exercise. Im glad to see some many new people in this forum! Good luck people!

Hi RedS, sounds like my story down to a T! I was sleeved on Jan 14th and I am feeling the same! I haven't had any nausea, just lots of soreness when in transition to stand/sit. I don't have an appetite at all so it has been difficult to force myself to drink or eat anything, especially Water. I have my first follow-up tomorrow and I am hoping he gives me green light to puréed food- might be wishful thinking! I am so ready to be over this hump and begin my new life!
Love hearing from all of you - best of luck in recovery to each of you!

HI this is my first post! So glad I found you. I was sleeved 1/15/15. So far doing well. I'm on clear liquid diet till Thursday when I see my doc and graduate to puree for 4 weeks I think. Having trouble getting 64 oz liquids in and hardly no Protein. I bought Isopure and it was disgusting. Only problem I had really was not being able to take pain and nausea pills he gave me, so I toughed it out but it's been tolerable. EXCEPT I can't sleep. Maybe 3 hrs a night--like from 7-10 am...I can't get comfortable anywhere. I'm a side, tummy sleeper and that's a no go. I cheated today and sucked on 5 cheerios. OMG it was sooo good. I'm starving! I'm weak and tire easily but get around a bit, do dishes, shower, etc. The w8 is coming off so fast I feel strange when I touch my face or arm and feel a bone that was never there. I feel my body changing so fast and it's kind of unnerving, but in a good way. Anyway thanks for listening. Hugs and good luck to all.

I had doubts the night before also, getting changed into the hospital gown the next day I was about to break down and just walk out but I know I couldn't do it any other way.
I went thru with the surgery and only being two days out I am in some discomfort but glad I did it and looking forward to the next chapter in my life.
Good luck with surgery if you do proceed.

Hi! I'm 5 days post op and doing pretty well. I'm not getting the suggested amount of liquid or Protein in tho. I'm on Clear Liquids till Thursday then I graduate to pureed food. I'm soooo hungry I can't wait. Only complaint is I can't get comfortable anywhere to sleep. So I get about 3 hrs a night. Grrrr! Hugs to all and good luck!
