@@jersey_girl_86 ....I know EXACTLY how you feel....I felt like I was dying after surgery because I could take in soo little and I was soooo weak....GATORADE was and is my life blood... (obviously you want to be drinking mostly Water but I needed electrolytes) talk to your DR about it but I'm telling you it helped me soooo much.....hope you are feeling better soon.....I was on Protein Shakes for 3 weeks post op and after that started with eggs yogurt mashed potatoes cottage cheese oatmeal and regular cheese...the more I diversified my diet the better I have felt...although I do HIGHLY recommend some type of stool softener/laxative etc once you start eating foods because I experienced a LOT of pain due to not being able to go to the bathroom...........anyways talk to your DR and see about Gatorade for electrolytes hope you are feeling better soon

    Hi Carmen606
Well, prior to surgery I was a fast eater. I was talking to my sister while I was eating my egg and not being very mindful of my eating. Let's just say, I won't do that again! It was painful. I took about 1/2 hour to pass before I felt right. My instinct was to take a drink of Water to wash it down, which I didn't do because I would have made it worse. As for how I'm feeling, I've been pretty good. No nausea at all. I feel pretty good about that. I had my surgery during my spring break and went back to school at 10days post op. I walk a lot on campus and think I over did it on Monday. By days end I had logged 5 miles on my fit bit. On Tuesday, I had zero energy. I laid around all day. It was like I hit a wall. I called my nutritionist and asked her and she felt it was a combo of things that zapped my energy, one she felt was low blood pressure. I was on a blood pressure pill for my diabetes. My dr took me off and I feel a million times better. If I had more stamina, I'd say I was back 100%. But it's really more like 85%. Prior to surgery I had been exercising regularly. Running about 3-5 miles a day. I even did my first 5k the Sunday before surgery. I think that helped me rebound so quickly. I have been waking a minimum of a mile each day, and three days a week between 3-5 miles. It takes me a lot longer than before surgery and that frustrates me. I hope you get back to feeling yourself soon.
As far as ketosis , I'm not sure what that feels like or is. I know when you eat a lot of Protein your body goes into ketosis, but what does it feel like. If it's a nasty metal taste in your mouth, I've got that off and on! I hate that taste. Today was my first day of soft foods. ( first two weeks were Protein Drinks only) I can have eggs, Beans, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt, quinoa, cheese, Peanut Butter. There is a few other item, but can't remember off the top of my head. My goal is 40 grams of protein, it was 30 the first two weeks. I had a hard time getting it with the shakes because I was so turned off by them. Today I did it! I've gotten my fluids in most of the days, and I know that helps.
Pre-op I lost 40lbs and I have lost another. 19 since surgery. It's crazy how fast it falls off. I had a post op yesterday and the surgeon was quite happy.
I'm curious to follow your journey as well, it's interesting to see how everyone's experience is different. So far, it's been ok for me. The first few days were the hardest. I'm looking forward to seeing just how the path unfolds for me. I look forward to seeing yours as well. I'm not hat great at this site yet. Not even sure how to edit my profile or add friends. I'll figure it out though.
Hope all is well for you,

@ LoriNS I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and I too suffered from gas pain....yes walking helps, walking stairs helps even more, walking stairs AND taking gas-x helps but what I have found to help the MOST with gas pain and nausea is chicken broth! It is like magic .....College Hill fat free and reduced sodium chicken broth and it fixes the gas and nausea....I personally do NOT recommend the powdered kind because it had too many spices for me and made my stomach upset but the premixed is GREAT...good luck with your progress and I hope you are feeling better soon....that gas pain was the worst for me also

One week after sleeve gastrectomy and I'm still alive.....It's been a long, tough and painful week......the gas pain and nausea have been the worst......well after all this time I have discovered a few things:
    1. Chicken/Beef/Vegetable broth has salt in it which helps a LOT to ease gas pain
    2. Walking around my house was not enough to get this horrible gas moving...STAIRS is the way to go
    3. I write down the date and times of everything I ingest this way I can keep track of Fluid intake, Protein intake and pill/vitamin intake
    4. At my weight it is NOT a good idea to sleep in bed too long because any more than 2 hours and I wake up feeling nauseous and like a sumo wrestler has been stomping on my stomach and intestines....also if I roll over too fast incisions dont like that
    5. Dont try to bend as quickly or as far as I did pre-op....sutures do not take kindly to these movements
    6. Ice chips are my FRIEND I love them because I can eat them or suck on them and make overfilling less likely (I literally put ice in a bag and hit it with a hammer to break it down)
    7. Gatorade is my LIFE BLOOD ......the first two days after I was home from surgery (off IV fluids) I felt so crappy I would sleep about 3 hours then wake up to take pills/vitamins and ingest fluids I only had 12 oz the first day and 15 the second...then I talked to my surgeon's assistant she suggested adding gatorade and I felt ALIVE again!
    8. Bowel movements are different now (nuff said)
Anyways I'm anxious to see how much weight I've lost since surgery....it's GOT to be a lot right ...since I'm ingesting next to nothing? Since I'm doing mostly nothing but trying to ingest enough protein, fluids, stairs, arm circles and stretching I'd love to hear from some others who have had or will have the sleeve gastrectomy........because I will definitely NOT be attending any easter festivities this year.......

@@TheAmberness My surgeon is in Reston Virginia my boyfriend lives in Fayetteville NC and he had the same gastric sleeve surgery three months ago....his experience was totally different.....I had Phentermine, he did not; I only had to do 3 days pre-surgery clear liquid diet whereas he had to do 2 weeks of one meal and the rest Protein Shakes only with only one day of Clear Liquids pre-surgery; he was in the hospital only one night whereas I was supposed to be in there two nights; he had a morphine drip after surgery, I had oxcodone pills; he was sent home with nausea meds and pain Syrup of some kind, I was sent home with neither......I have an undergraduate degree in Biology therefore I know my surgeon has the better approach...we had a lengthy discussion as to why he does not send patients home with pain meds and although I'm in pain, I agree with him....he said I need to be able to FEEL if something is going wrong, I need to be able to feel if I have overfilled the sleeve and pain meds also lower inhibitions which could lead to a nibble of food my body cant handle right now....he said after three weeks my sleeve will be healed and overfilling will still be painful but not nearly as dangerous....have you had your surgery yet?

@@tee1463 and @@Laureadolce I had surgery on Friday 3/27 and woke up saying "im in PAIN im in PAIN"....my surgeon gave me oxycodone orally 3 tiny pills and when that didnt take the pain away he added iv dilaudid...that made me feel grrreat...the next day i had visitors i talked with for 3 hours i felt sooo good I thought I was going home (originaly my surgeon said expect to be in the hospital 2 nights) after they left the nausea kicked in and i felt horrible...had pain meds every 3 hours really they just put me to sleep and dilaudid once more have no idea how much apple juice, Water, chicken broth i was ingesting i know now it probably wasnt enough....by day 3 i was feeling horrible and started developing a cramp in my left calf (blood clot scare) so FINALLY after like 5 hours of waiting I was sent on a rollercoaster of a hospital bed ride down to get a doppler sonograph of my legs to check for clots...more hours later I was told they found no clots...yet I had no idea when my doctor was coming or when I would be released ( I am self pay and didn't want to pay any more money to stay in the hospital) in the meantime the IV giving me Potassium Chloride in my left hand was starting to come out and my hand was swelling so I asked the nurse to change the site...she sent in some very young looking nurse to do the job of course she did it wrong and I screamed for her to take it out! I now have a gorgeous bruise all over my forearm to show for that....oh and in the meantime I was given a shot in the stomach in case I did have a blood clot ....fortunately before surgery I had no diabetes no high blood pressure and was on no prescription medication sans Vitamin D and Phentermine (which was the only way I could lose 25lbs before surgery).....so anyways finally about 7 pm the third day I was at the hospital my surgeon's assistant came and talked to me for about 20 minutes about "sip slowly" and what would happen if I overfilled the sleeve in the first 3 weeks oh and by the way the third morning I started having these pain level 8 splitting headaches....I would take the oxycodones sleep for 2-3 hours and wake up to DING DING DING DING of the stupid IV machine I felt like my head was going to explode (which did NOT make me a pleasant patient for the slew of non English as a first language nurses).......finally after asking 3 different nurses one finally told me the pain meds had a side effect of headache after the others just said you are moving your arm which is causing the IV machine to DING DING DING well how am I supposed to control arm movement in my sleep?! There is more to the story but I'm getting tired already....I shall return at a later time to continue the saga that has been my bariatric surgery.....GAS is my evil enemy and I am in PAIN as my surgeon doesn't believe in sending patients home with pain meds....I'm waiting on my poor 71 year old mother to bring me sublingual tylenol right now and praying for some relief.......this better be worth it! I'd love to hear about your experiences and how you ladies are doing thus far
